That is the advert flashing up on Mumsnet ,next to threads I’m looking at
since when did they start using child ,rather than daughter
ffs .
how many boys need to be got ready for their period age 10 ,
,so just say daughter ,girl ,woman …
are they trying to be subtle so we don’t notice the change in language
fucks me of no end

"Actual science" after that tired old Scientific American article.... ok.

otherwayup · 15/08/2023 13:46

@Sueveneers
The advert has a 'girls' and 'women's' corner.
So yes, the reaction from some to the advert has been hysterical.

Not everyone who raises a female child is their mother. I cared for my friends daughter when she had a breakdown, this advert would have appealed to us both immensely.
As it would to any other foster carers etc

The transphobia on here is abhorrent at times and this thread is a perfect example.

I've covered this all.

It's the paragraph that is the concern.

The vast overwhelming majority of girls are brought up by their mother. I think the teeny tiny minority that aren't, can cope with the term 'daughter'.

Defending the definition of women and girls is not 'transphobia', but the amount of femphobic cult religious (and Gender Ideology is a religion, as Dawkins says) ideology that sees some people so brainwashed they deem life, air, water, women, girls, everything 'twansphobic', is sad.

Lol you realise that pseudo site is filled with junk science and has been roundly criticised and debunked by actual biologists such as Richard Dawkins?

That anyone still uses 'Scientific American' despite it being known as Junk Science paradise, is amazing.

Nature, is a widely respected scientific publication and considers the work of a peer reviewed geneticist. I don't think you know what pseudoscience means. Also, Richard Dawkins is only one theorist- he's a zoologist and he may well go toe-to-toe with a geneticist if he wishes. That's for them to do in peer reviewed articles.

Cowlover89 · 15/08/2023 13:51

You're overthinking it

Signef · 15/08/2023 13:51

I suspect it’s child to be inclusive of people raising granddaughters, nieces etc

Everydayimhuffling · 15/08/2023 13:54

You're massively overthinking that. And even if you weren't, girls are children so it's still correct.

No it isn't. It's been fact-checked almost as many times as Trump's twitter account has. It is not respected at all with actual scientists, biologists or geneticists. It has a very bad reputation for a reason.

Weatherwax134 · 15/08/2023 13:55

I'm just going to leave the last message here for the two genetics experts- I look forward to your future research. My school only subscribes to Early Human Development and The British Journal of Human Development and Capabilities. So if you ensure it makes one of those then that would be great. Other than that, calm down- it's only the word 'child'.

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/08/2023 13:57

If Dawkins isn't good enough, how about Robert Winston? He might have some kind of an inkling, perhaps?

otherwayup · 15/08/2023 13:58

@Sueveneers
Please educate yourself. I work in children's social care and you are massively deluded if you think a vast amount of children aren't being brought up by someone that isn't there Mum.

I am in between here and twitter, I went to 'like' your comment and all it did was bookmarked it. Lol.

Well according to a poster above, those not raised by their mother should be able to cope with it Confused

Sueveneers · 15/08/2023 13:59

I said the vast majority are raised by their mother. This is true. I am not the one who needs educating.

otherwayup · 15/08/2023 14:00

@BodegaSushi
Hideous comment right?
I'll pass that onto the children who's mums have died, gone to prison etc shall I? 😳

Why not? Those that don't want their daughter to be called "an individual entering puberty" have to cope with it. Why is it always only one way?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 15/08/2023 14:02

Maybe it’s as simple as daughter would take up too many letters on the poster and child also sounds snappier than child or girl.

As the mantra on FWR often goes, you don't get to control how others refer to you. Don't try to compel others speech.

You can refer to your daughter how you wish. Always can use what phrasing it likes on their adverts.

Signef · 15/08/2023 14:05

Even 25 years ago it was ingrained in teachers that not all kids are raised by their mums and dads.

I think we know that. But language was still aimed at the majority.

ItsABrandNewDay · 15/08/2023 14:13

Seen a few people note they haven't seen the add, couldn't see anyone has posted it yet and it's just come up for me so I've attached. 😊

otherwayup · 15/08/2023 14:18

@Sueveneers

Are you honestly comparing a parent who doesn't like the term 'a child entering puberty' to a child who has suffered the loss of a parent?

Really showing yourself up now aren't you!

otherwayup · 15/08/2023 14:19

@Sueveneers
Apologies 'an individual entering puberty' 🙄

Awumminnscotland · 15/08/2023 14:29

viques · 15/08/2023 13:23

“ get girls period ready” would work, though the whole concept is strange.

I can’t believe that there is a school teaching “ not all girls menstruate” so as not to offend girl identifying boys. Do they also teach that “not all boys get erections” so girls identifying as boys don’t feel missed out?

And yes, I am aware that not all girls do menstruate, for a variety of reasons , but that is a different issue.

Yup! And it's not just one school, it's the official rhsp teaching for all Scotland schools. I said our school as individual schools are allowed to challenge ghe teaching but they're all terrified to.
