That is the advert flashing up on Mumsnet ,next to threads I’m looking at
since when did they start using child ,rather than daughter
ffs .
how many boys need to be got ready for their period age 10 ,
,so just say daughter ,girl ,woman …
are they trying to be subtle so we don’t notice the change in language
fucks me of no end

@Weatherwax134 what other sex of children is there apart from girls and boys?

BodegaSushi · 15/08/2023 13:28

Sueveneers · 15/08/2023 13:26

And it's not uncommon for the website template/sections to say women/girls, tht could have been there for years, and someone now adding on a section that has differing language. The paragraph is the most recent, and it's quite telling. As to how many are raising nieces/grand daughters/foster daughters etc, I wager that the overwhelming majority of girls are raised by their mums, so why not cater to the majority? It's not like a grandmother/aunt/foster mum can't figure out what it means anyway.

Not just the 'template', you can keep on clicking and still see the words there. Any more stretches?

I swear the website could be flashing GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS all over it and still people would be saying 'wow, everyone is BLIND to it!'

There is an issue with language around women, this isn't it.

@BodegaSushi what ads you will see depends potentially on your browsing history so you may not see the ad. It's just an image of Always pads, with the slogan and a click here for tips link.

There are a so many nuances in biological sex; if we're going by chromosome combination then there are at least 6 karyotype variations: XX, XY, X, XXY, XYY and XXXY. Leaving aside all the questions about socialised gender etc. lots of doctors and geneticists are happy to agree that the simple male/female is likely overly simplistic.

Thank you. If someone who sees it clicks and can provide the link it would be great. All I have to go on is that it's an ad for Always, and their website uses 'female', 'women' and 'girl' throughout, so I didn't get the outrage.

I said template/sections.

Meaning the person who designed the site (could have been several years ago) used those words.

Today is a different era.

I swear people see 'young people' and 'individuals entering puberty' (on a website for periods) and can't see the gymnastics. Because they don't want to see it and will create any excuse possible. Denial ain't a river in Egypt.

BodegaSushi · 15/08/2023 13:36

@Sueveneers so please answer, how should they have phrased it to include girls that aren't daughters of the people in their care?

DSDs are not evidence of a third sex or that "male/female is likely overly simplistic". It proves absolutely nothing. Certainly not what you are trying to make it prove. A medical anomally, is not evidence that male/female isn't immutable. Even Richard Dawkins and other biologists on social media have explained this over and over. DSDs are medical anomalies. Sex, is binary and immutable. Even with those above karotypes, if you have a Y anywhere in there, you're male.

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/08/2023 13:38

@Weatherwax134 those chromosomal combinations are disorders of sexual development not additional sexes. DSDs are sex-specific, the fact that it may be more complicated to identify an individual's sex doesn't mean they are a third sex.

I think I answered that above. In a short answer? Why should they have to? The majority of girls are raised by their mother, and the tiny minority that aren't can well accept and understand what an add says. Not everything needs to be inclusive of every single infinite possible possibility in life to cover all bases. "girls" and "daughter" served fine for decades. Why does it need changing now?

But research suggests that 1 in 100 may experience these changes, therefore leading us to a redefinition of biological sex. It wouldn't be the first time we've rethought a major system of biological classification- if nothing ever changed then we'd still believe consciousness resided in the heart and the womb caused an inability to do maths!

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/08/2023 13:41

@viques the ad doesn't show on the iOs mobile app, nor does it appear for everyone all of the time on the desktop website. If I get a chance I'll screen shot it and give the click through link.

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/08/2023 13:42

@Weatherwax134 no.... there is no need to change the biological classification of sex in humans due to DSDs.

Unwisebutnotillegal · 15/08/2023 13:42

My partner comes from an extremely backwards Islamic country and quite literally got into his twenties without knowing what periods are, he also had/has very poor understanding of reproductive health. I’ve openly talked to my son and shown him sanitary products from the off. The more we normalise it for everyone the better.

It is nowhere near 1 in 100, more like 1 in several hundred thousand. And no, lol, it does not mean biological sex needs a redefinition or reclassification, any more than a baby born with 3 legs means the human species needs to be 'reclassified' to say homo sapiens are tripeds.

Weatherwax134 · 15/08/2023 13:43

I think it's mad that, in a world containing poverty, global warming, serious illness and mental ill-health...this is the hill people want to die on.

Sueveneers · 15/08/2023 13:44

I think it's mad in world with climate change and poverty, a desperate attempt to prove DSDs needs sex to be reclassified is the hill some will die on.

Also, @Weatherwax134 that 1 in 100 stat for DSDs is incorrect, it has been debunked many times. It includes people with very minor issues around the development eg mild hypospadias in boys, for example.

Hey I didn't come out here to die on this hill- I have no skin in this game. I'm simply telling people that the use of the word 'child' in a mumnet ad shouldn't cause your blood pressure to rise this much. Just read a couple of daily mail articles until you feel better.

Lol you realise that pseudo site is filled with junk science and has been roundly criticised and debunked by actual biologists such as Richard Dawkins?

That anyone still uses 'Scientific American' despite it being known as Junk Science paradise, is amazing.

otherwayup · 15/08/2023 13:46

@Sueveneers
The advert has a 'girls' and 'women's' corner.
So yes, the reaction from some to the advert has been hysterical.

Not everyone who raises a female child is their mother. I cared for my friends daughter when she had a breakdown, this advert would have appealed to us both immensely.
As it would to any other foster carers etc

The transphobia on here is abhorrent at times and this thread is a perfect example.

Fab- add your article link and I'll give it a read. That's how actual science works- rather than me just arguing with you, I'll actually look at the science from the experts.
