AIBU that Rishi Sunak's holiday to Disneyland be headline news?

There is almost like a 'read the room' feeling on this. Personally I think it's distasteful given the current cost of living crisis - I'm not saying going on holiday is distasteful but highlighting it to the general public as headline news just seems insidious. Why is this even news ? If someone can please explain it to me that would be wonderful.

I genuinely don’t understand your AIBU, or your thread title.

What are you saying is unreasonable? Sunak’s actions? The media coverage? Your reaction to either of those? Other people’s reactions?

iwillnotstaycalm · 02/08/2023 14:16

I'm saying why is the fact he going on holiday headline news - just that. I don't understand why it's a public event ?

I don’t like the man but he’s got as much right to go on holiday as everyone else. It’s not like that’s a ludicrously expensive trip anyway.

I agree - he has a right to go on holiday, of course, but I'm just trying to understand why it should be headline news

Who is AIBU? He isn’t BU to go on holiday.

Not everyone is feeling the pinch, you wouldn’t know anything was happening where I am.

HeadacheEarthquake · 02/08/2023 14:22

YANBU - of course he has a right to go on holiday but I don't understand why it's headline news!! There are plenty of more important things to be reporting on, not a smug millionaire's holiday, whilst a lot of people have found their mortgages have doubled amongst other wonderful COL experiences

DismantledKing · 02/08/2023 14:23

Eh? What a mad idea for a thread.

DismantledKing · 02/08/2023 14:24

I’ve got no time for the man, but where’s he allowed to go on holiday then? Pontins?

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 14:25

I just looked on the BBC and it wasn't on there, Trump was the headline. We used to go to Disneyland when DS was young though so nothing unusual there with the age of his children

GreenWheat · 02/08/2023 14:26

There is media coverage because it's silly season, and the media struggle to find anything to report on. Parliament is in recess so there's no political debate.

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 14:27

Which news, Facebook news

GreenWheat · 02/08/2023 14:27

Also crap weather in the UK so no opportunity for space-filling "what a scorcher" swimsuit shots of the general public.

DelilahBucket · 02/08/2023 14:27

It's headline news because it gives people like you something to get wound up about. That is literally the reason 50% of our mainstream news exists.

iwillnotstaycalm · 02/08/2023 14:28

Please actually read what I have said before commenting? I'm not talking about him going on holiday Confused as I have said - he has every right to do so.

I'm talking about why it is being highlighted to the public. Whilst many people battle their energy / mortgages / wine bills we are being told about him going on holiday to a place where many parents couldn't afford to take their kids right now.

Food for thought is all I'm asking. I'm not attacking him jfc

I'm not wound up by it - I thought the exact same thing. It gives people ammunition but I'm unsure why ?

I can't see it on BBC or Sky news

It has obviously got to you or this thread wouldn't exist! Otherwise you have seen it, shrugged, and moved on.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/08/2023 14:32

Well, I really can't stand Sunak but he is entitled to go on holiday with his family and we all know that he can afford a trip to Disneyland. So I think really the issue is with the media who have made this into a story.

I haven't actually seen the coverage so not sure if the point of the story is to emphasise the fact that we aren't all in this together? It's hardly news if that's the case, as we all know that the Sunaks are very wealthy. I don't think they should have to pretend to be poor to make the general public feel better about their own financial struggles. I just think that Sunak and his government should implement better policies that help others to get out of the poverty that they're stuck in.

AutumnCrow · 02/08/2023 14:33

Your thread title and opening post were confusing, though, OP. There’s no point berating posters for responding the wrong way.

You could have asked, ‘AIBU to think that Sunak’s family holiday should be a private matter and not subject to media scrutiny?’ or something.

yogasaurus · 02/08/2023 14:33

Headline news where? Twitter doesn’t count.

widowtwankywashroom · 02/08/2023 14:37

You ask a valid question - why is it being highlighted? No one cares, he is a husband and I presume father, going on holiday, it has fuck all to do with you.
Here's a thing, not everyone is suffering financially !
After seeing how busy Cheshire Oaks was last week and the Trafford Centre etc I am inclined to say cost of living my arse!

widowtwankywashroom · 02/08/2023 14:39

I don't pretend to be hard up, because its patronising to people who are struggling, I am comfortable and I have a nice standard of living, am I jealous of those who spend more or have more, no.

Iamgoingtohell · 02/08/2023 14:40

I haven’t seen this headline news. It’s a story to illicit people to hate Rishi some more for going on a holiday a lot of people can’t afford.
No I can’t afford to go to Disney but it doesn’t bother me that he has the means to take his own family.

And I think that is absolutely fair and valid. I wouldn't want anyone to pretend for the sake of pretending - I just don't understand why the media has to highlight it as a public affair. What do they expect to achieve by it ?

Yes, I think it got to me but not because he is going on holiday (I really couldn't give a toss) but the fact it was highlighted is just very odd to me.
