AIBU that Rishi Sunak's holiday to Disneyland be headline news?

There is almost like a 'read the room' feeling on this. Personally I think it's distasteful given the current cost of living crisis - I'm not saying going on holiday is distasteful but highlighting it to the general public as headline news just seems insidious. Why is this even news ? If someone can please explain it to me that would be wonderful.

Sunday Times wealth list had them at £730m in 2022. His wife's family firm is worth $63bn.

And yet he deems it appropriate to pay a smaller proportion of his income in tax than nurses and teachers have to.

Frankola · 02/08/2023 16:43

Well he hasn't posted about it. Nor has his wife. So they aren't bragging...

The media post crap like this to create negative sentiment against politicians. It'll be labour influenced media trying to make people hate the tories even more. Plus Parliament is out at the moment. No other political news.

SusiePevensie · 02/08/2023 16:49

Mr Sunak told LBC: “I’m actually going off on holiday this afternoon, the country will be left in the capable hands of the Deputy Prime Minister (Oliver Dowden). So we're having our first proper family summer holiday in, I think, a few years for sure, which I'm very much looking forward to, spending time with my kids."
He added: “We are going to California, which is where I met my wife. The kids are very excited because I’m taking them to Disneyland.” His two daughters Krishna, 12, and Anoushka, 10, have "sadly grown out of all the princesses", he said.
But Star Wars fan Mr Sunak gushed that he was "very excited about" visiting the Galaxy’s Edge attraction at the resort. "They rather fear that we're going to have to spend more time there than they would like, he said.

BoohooWoohoo · 02/08/2023 16:55

It's no secret that he's super wealthy - why shouldn't he go on holiday? The industry needs his money and why shouldn't his DDs get their usual summer holiday because their dad is PM?
I remember when David Cameron used to fly Easy Jet and wear holiday clothes that looked high street to pretend to make a point and it made me roll my eyes. We know that he will have stayed at a fabulous location in a gorgeous property which was probably loaned to him for free. The Call-me-Dave act while he was PM was just 🙄

If you don’t like the story don’t read it? You don’t have to read any of it if you don’t want to

Labour influenced media??? You'll have to expand on that!!!

Anyway, he does precious little here in the UK, he loves the USA (worked there, Green Card) so may as well stay there.

Frankola · 02/08/2023 20:40

@Bananasandcorn The Guardian, Mirror, Observer, Daily Fail are just some that lean towards Labour. And you genuinely dont believe the press have no political bias or relationships do you?

Some of the others that lean towards Labour include the Sun and Torygraph.

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2023 20:47

I became a Communist today after reading The Daily Express.

Lots of people (including politicians) work abroad at earlier stages of their lives.
what is it about mr Sunak that causes people to use that as grounds to allege he will or should stay there, I wonder? Hmmm.

SusiePevensie · 02/08/2023 21:14

The Daily Mail leans towards Labour?

LakeTiticaca · 02/08/2023 21:47

Go to any UK airport and ask how many people/families are flying abroad on holiday. My guess is there are thousands. Should they all stay at home lest they upset those who can't afford a holiday?

user73 · 02/08/2023 21:51

Sorry but more importantly, how does that sentence even begin to make sense to you OP?

”am I being unreasonable that Rishi Sunaks holiday to Disneyland be headline news”

what?

Notonthestairs · 02/08/2023 22:03

Labour leaning Telegraph at it last year (when they thought they could hang on to Johnson) -

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/04/10/santa-monica-beckons-rishi-sunak-political-stock-continues-plummet/

I don't care where he goes.

WandaWonder · 02/08/2023 22:10

Yeah in one way I don't get why as in hope he has a great time like anyone on holidays but it is not news as such but in another way I get sick of constant bad depressing news so then I think so what it's on the news it doesn't need to be anayalised

Because he has been rubbish at every job he has held in government?

FrivolousTreeDuck · 03/08/2023 07:33

Rich bloke goes on expensive holiday - no surprise.

SerendipityJane · 03/08/2023 07:47

It's embarrassingly simple.

If THIS is headline news then you haven't got as much room for THAT. Or indeed THE OTHER

And Rish! and his elk (ironic smiley face) know that the English are so shallow that as long as they can see their glorious leader loading up on his tan, they will magically forget there is a CoL crisis. The climate is going to shit with his foot on the accelerator, we have the most corrupt government in two centuries, our country is literally crumbling to pieces.

Now that last may not be true. But I will promise you it's what our media think. Or to put it another way, no one buys their paper for the news.

The amount of posts on mn about going to Disneyland, it’s hardly rare

Zanatdy · 03/08/2023 07:51

The media always cover PM’s holidays, saw plenty of photos of Boris on holiday when he was PM

SerendipityJane · 03/08/2023 07:55

Also maybe (given the recent 1970s revival the UK is enjoying) they are lining up for a "Crisis ? What crisis ?" moment when he returns.

If they are, my money is on The Sun.

Westfacing · 03/08/2023 07:55

I don't care where he goes - we know he is very rich so a trip to California is about right.

Remember how Cameron used to be pictured in Cornwall, and let it be known if he was flying somewhere by EasyJet, then keep quiet about anything more luxurious.

CloudyMcCloud · 03/08/2023 08:01

The bad weather windy hill holiday photo ops are funny. Of course they’ll do the family holiday privately and their dc will enjoy that version

If you can't use your brain and gather what OP is trying to say here, albeit with a missing word, typo or imperfect grammar, then it might be you that has the problem with making sense of things.

I actually suspect you do understand and you're just being spiteful to give yourself a buzz.

Not sure which is worse!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/08/2023 08:13

TBH I could understand the indignation if he were off to some private Caribbean island where a suite costs £10k a night, but Disneyland is nothing that special, lots of ordinary people go, and presumably his children are of an age to enjoy it.

The media report all sorts of trivia about anyone famous or in the public eye, so I don’t know why anyone would be surprised that they’re reporting this.
