AIBU that Rishi Sunak's holiday to Disneyland be headline news?

There is almost like a 'read the room' feeling on this. Personally I think it's distasteful given the current cost of living crisis - I'm not saying going on holiday is distasteful but highlighting it to the general public as headline news just seems insidious. Why is this even news ? If someone can please explain it to me that would be wonderful.

We always get told where leaders go. This is not new. I remember Cameron going to Cornwall, and to Majorca in Easyjet.

We always knew the multiple places Johnson was.

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 14:56

Where is this headline news

GCAcademic · 02/08/2023 14:56

There is always coverage of where the PM holidays, isn’t there? I recall Cameron, May and Johnson being photographed on various summer holidays.

Plenty of people can afford a trip to Disneyland (and plenty of people on MN would actually look down their nose on a trip to Disneyland) and I don’t think it’s news to anyone that Sunak can.

Twyford · 02/08/2023 15:00

Prime Ministers' holidays always end up in the news. Remember that stupid nonsense about Johnson and the supposed camping holiday on a cliff? And those carefully posed photos of Cameron looking at a fish stall at some Cornish seaside holiday spot? I can even remember all the stuff about Harold Wilson's holidays in the Scilly Isles.

Oddly, I can't remember anything about Thatcher's hols, but maybe she just didn't take holidays.

Twyford · 02/08/2023 15:01

I bet Sunak isn't actually going to rough it in Disneyland, he's probably going to rough it in his California mansion.

CloudyMcCloud · 02/08/2023 15:03

I didn’t hear it but I think it was a question on LBC

Basically hard to say mind your own, so it becomes ‘news’

drivinmecrazy · 02/08/2023 15:04

I agree OP. I listened to his interview this morning on LBC where he blamed doctors and consultants for NHS waiting times and told people who were struggling to pay their mortgage to just extend the term.
Then when asked if he was going away this summer he replies saying he was going to California (to his mahoosive) mansion and would be taking his kids to Disney world.
His tone in the whole interview was of a man who is so out of touch it was unreal.
Don't care where he holidays but read the fecking room!!! 😡

CobraKaiNeverLoses · 02/08/2023 15:05

Please actually read what I have said before commenting?

I’m sure they tried. What you said was unintelligible.

honeylulu · 02/08/2023 15:07

I'm sure he didn't want his family holiday to be headline news. I'm no fan of the tories but there's nothing terrible about the holiday itself. Plenty of pretty average people have taken their kids to Disney, me included.

BibbleandSqwauk · 02/08/2023 15:07

As a pp said, it's slow news time for the media and it's an easy way to stir up some conflict and strife by putting up goady stuff. It's a very easy, lazy headline isn't it...Rich Rishi being "tone deaf", whilst, as others have said, his wealth is his, legally obtained and can be used however he legally chooses. Yes he could make political hay by holidaying in the UK and supporting a local tourist industry but he'd be papped constantly and he's entitled to a private life same as anyone.

User265438765 · 02/08/2023 15:08

So he said it on a radio station, that's not headline news.

So should he have lied?

Bananasandcorn · 02/08/2023 15:12

Only thing that should be news worthy is he plans on coming back.

Sunak is being more unreasonable to not at least pay the same proportion of his income in taxes as a nurse or teacher does.

Bananasandcorn · 02/08/2023 15:14

yogasaurus · 02/08/2023 15:12

So should he have lied?

The reason there are huge NHS waiting lists is because his party have done nothing about staff shortages and have refused to negotiate on pay "here is 5% now fuck off"

Other countries had Covid but do not have 7.5m people waiting for ops.

So he did lie.

ReviewingTheSituation · 02/08/2023 15:16

I get you, OP! I saw it on the BBC website earlier (on the front page), and also wondered why on earth this counted as 'news'.

I'm sure no-one gives 2 hoots about him going to California, and of course he's entitled to a holiday. But it really doesn't need to be on the front page of BBC online. It's still there now, but slightly lower down the page.

kikigen · 02/08/2023 15:16

I thought PMs always played it safe by going to Cornwall, except Boris of course!

DelilahBucket · 02/08/2023 14:27

It's headline news because it gives people like you something to get wound up about. That is literally the reason 50% of our mainstream news exists.

This 100%!!

So true

Star81 · 02/08/2023 15:29

People always say politicians don’t answer questions which gets headline news yet when when they do actually answer they get headline news.

He couldn’t win either way, either lie and say he wasn’t going anywhere or could have gone somewhere like butlins / AI 3* somewhere and then he would have been accused of trying to be like one of the struggling people when his job means he’s not.

Jujubes5 · 02/08/2023 15:34

I remember picks of T Blair and D Cameron topless. Also pics of their wives( not topless).

MutantTurtles · 02/08/2023 15:40

Didn't one of the former wives (might have been Sam Cam) say that the best thing about her DH no longer being PM was that they didn't have to go on holiday to Cornwall in the rain and pretend they were enjoying it (or similar)

SusiePevensie · 02/08/2023 15:40

By their standards, Disney is slummimg it. The Sunaks are astonishingly rich - Succession rich. Disney, for them, is like a GP's family going on a Sun bargain break. I assume he brought it up because he thought it made them seem more normal.

SusiePevensie · 02/08/2023 15:43

Sunday Times wealth list had them at £730m in 2022. His wife's family firm is worth $63bn.

Morph22010 · 02/08/2023 15:49

I’ve not seen it in the headline news I would be none the wiser unless I’d read this thread announcing it
