AIBU that Rishi Sunak's holiday to Disneyland be headline news?

There is almost like a 'read the room' feeling on this. Personally I think it's distasteful given the current cost of living crisis - I'm not saying going on holiday is distasteful but highlighting it to the general public as headline news just seems insidious. Why is this even news ? If someone can please explain it to me that would be wonderful.

The difference will be staying in their own Santa Monica flat.

But no it's not headline worthy news given the range of issues facing the country.

roarrfeckingroar · 03/08/2023 08:27

There's not much else going on in politics as parliament is recess. It shouldn't be a story, he deserves a holiday as much as anyone.

CurlewKate · 03/08/2023 08:30

I loathe the man, his policies and his colleagues with a passion, but bloody hell, he's allowed to have a holiday! And his kids are allowed to go to Disneyland. So long as he's paying for it himself, of course.

Please actually read what I have said before commenting? I'm not talking about him going on holiday Confused as I have said - he has every right to do so.

I'm talking about why it is being highlighted to the public. Whilst many people battle their energy / mortgages / wine bills we are being told about him going on holiday to a place where many parents couldn't afford to take their kids right now.

Food for thought is all I'm asking. I'm not attacking him jfc

It’s to wind people up, how dare he go on holiday when everyone is struggling. Obviously not everyone is struggling of course. I always think that prime ministers have such unremarkable holidays though.

Rather them stay in their own flat that the endless vacation freebies that some of our previous PMs used to take from dubious people that they were then indebted to.

JustDanceAddict · 03/08/2023 08:43

Why should he not go away? We all know he’s well off and plenty of people go to Disney so what’s the news? Who cares?
should he go to a caravan in Bognor for two weeks?
should I not go to a posh hotel w dh for a week cos other people can’t afford it? Madness.
ps: I’m def not Tory

Just some people jealous of another's person's success

expatbaby · 03/08/2023 08:55

The news has been reporting on Prime Minister's holidays for decades. The fact that a multimillionaire has taken his kids to Disneyland is more like a normal family than an exclusive island retreats many in his income bracket choose.

Also a quick Google search shows that UK visitors to Florida are almost at prepandemic levels so I don't think the COL crisis is having as much impact as you'd think.

Lots of people (including politicians) work abroad at earlier stages of their lives.
what is it about mr Sunak that causes people to use that as grounds to allege he will or should stay there, I wonder? Hmmm.

Sunak kept his Green card when he shouldn't have.

I want him to stay there because like Harry, he is obviously happier there and it would mean he is no longer able to keep fucking up the UK.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/08/2023 14:01

Tin foil hat on, it would make sense that this was published rather than have Greenpeace/whoever admit that they had a source that could tell them when the house would be unoccupied and largely unguarded, wouldn't it?

It didn't take a ten minute trip to Mansion-Shrouds-R-Us after listening to LBC/whoever to arrange that stunt, after all. So somebody knew that they weren't going to be in.

Surprised your other post was deleted.

The only "news" that I've heard on the radio is that JSO activists have draped his constituency house in black fabric!

CruCru · 03/08/2023 14:21

It is a bit weird, every August there are news stories about wherever the PM at the time is off on holiday. I expect that Rishi Sunak will have paid for his himself.

The Times had a bit at the bottom to say that Keri Starmer is going to have his holiday in the UK. So presumably that is more virtuous than taking the children to Disneyland.

mast0650 · 03/08/2023 14:31

I can't stand Rishi Sunak. I loathe his politics.

However, I literally just read the Guardian's story on his holiday to California and commented to DH that I could not understand why it was being reported as news and felt it was unfair for The Guardian to imply that there was anything wrong with it. He has every right to take his family for a week's holiday to California/Disney without being sneered at.

I'm saying why is the fact he going on holiday headline news - just that. I don't understand why it's a public event ?

Would you prefer them not to go on holiday? They are a very wealthy family who have taken their kids on holiday I don't see the huge deal tbh

Just stupid. If he were happier there he would have stayed, not put himself through the political wringer here. And so what about the green card - tons of people from the UK who’ve worked in the US have done same.
the reason people make a thing of it for him is because it plays into a classic racist trope. And the more defensively they squeal, the more we know it’s true.

Given as you say they are a very wealthy family can you explain why it is appropriate for them to pay a smaller proportion of their income in tax than a nurse or teacher does?

I have no idea what tax they pay this is about a prime minister on holiday with his wife and children , which happens with every single past PM they put it out there so they seem relatable. RS and wife are so wealthy that it's beyond my comprehension.

He kept his, you re not supposed too, just as he shouldn't be setting favourable tax rates for his wife either (or himself come to that) the UK has never had a billionaire as PM before.

Racist? wtf are you on about? unless being a Tory is a "race" there is zero race element, maybe you think he is beyond criticism?

Like all politicians he wanted power, being PM gives him that, does it make him happy? he always look miserable behind that brilliant smile.

I dont think he’s beyond criticism. I think insinuating he will or should leave the country based on behaviour no different to many other people stinks like a sewer, and you are certainly not articulate enough to change my mind.

HalloumiLuvver · 03/08/2023 22:18

Your title and OP could have been much better phrased to avoid misinterpretation.

It's August. Known in the media as Silly Season - Parliament is in recess and they have hours/pages to fill so latch on to anything to keep the presses rolling.

I remember reading an interesting analysis piece that the Soham murders got much more press attention not only because it was 2 young (white) girls - the press love an interesting (and pretty) victim profile - but because it happened in August when not much else was happening. Thousands of people go missing every year, and there are several murders, but the press only latch on to a few cases to "blow up".

So Rishi going to Disneyland is a fluff piece for August papers.

HalloumiLuvver · 03/08/2023 22:24

Frankola · 02/08/2023 20:40

@Bananasandcorn The Guardian, Mirror, Observer, Daily Fail are just some that lean towards Labour. And you genuinely dont believe the press have no political bias or relationships do you?

You cannot seriously state that the DM is "labour leaning". I can't take anything you say seriously after that GrinGrinGrin

Yellowdays · 03/08/2023 22:54

Daily Fail is Labour leaning? Hahaha. As if.

And why heaps of people are struggling to understand the OP's very simple question is beyond me.

Why is the PMs holiday newsworthy? Simple. It's a fair question.

I agree with the poster who says that it is because there's not much news as it's silly season.
