Costa using Pride image of girl with breasts removed to support trans?

"Costa Coffee was today accused of glamourising 'complex and dangerous surgery' by covering a van with a cartoon image featuring mastectomy scars.
The UK's largest coffee chain defended its use of the image to promote 'inclusivity and diversity' but was branded 'crass and irresponsible' and 'absolutely bonkers' – and there were calls for a boycott of the company on social media.
The image, depicting an androgynous-looking character wearing long shorts with scars below each nipple, is taken from a mural designed by the chain for Brighton and Hove Pride last year."

I find the attempt to 'normalise' the removal of perfectly healthy breasts because someone feels more masculine is wrong. AIBU

I think there is a cohort of marketeers who live in an echo chamber where no one ever says “erm hang on a minute…”

This is sick. Celebrating the removal of the breasts of women.
Can't we just celebrate women?
There is another thread on it in the FWR board, but IMO this belongs in AIBU any day of the week.

yes is the Daily Mail but surely the bigger issue is the story is factual. Costa have used this image. A bigger issue IMO is that some feel it is ok to remove perfectly normal, healthy breast tissue. Social contagion, normal angst over puberty and time needed to get used to your own body. Or just lop the breasts of and pretend your a man now. Factually, biologically you cannot change sex no matter how much you chop off and take hormones to help change.

Maybe more mental health assistance first.

It’s awful. I expect the usual suspects will be along shortly to point out that this was a van promoting ‘Pride’. I find it hard to believe that an event which celebrated the full inclusion of same sex attracted people into the rights and privileges of society, has sunk to popularising mutilation.

I know it's crazy. What sort of society thinks it's ok to chop off girls breasts because they are struggling with their mental health?

I agree, I find it sick, repulsive and so damaging.

Wait until 10 years when these poor young girls realise what they have done to themselves. Already some are detransitioning. It really makes my stomach heave seeing this when women who have breast cancer have no choice but to remove.

Remember years ago (or maybe still, I'm not sure) women would have huge implants to create a look and now there are women who will chop off their breasts to identify as men.

Strangely men that want to be women rarely chop their bits off, some do but the vast majority keep the meat and 2 veg intake and just wear what they think is women's clothing!

"Bottom" surgery (euch hate that euphemism) is pretty rare among both male and female trans people I believe. Its far more complex and gives far less predictable results than adding or removing breaststroke.

DisquietintheRanks · 01/08/2023 09:42

Breast tissue

Rainbowshit · 01/08/2023 09:43

This is horrific. Shame on Costa.

VickyEadieofThigh · 01/08/2023 09:43

It's abhorrent and the same - for me - as celebrating self-starvation by anorexics.

ArabeIIaScott · 01/08/2023 09:45

Dr Webberley (a doctor who sells medication to the gender confused) says these girls need to remove their breasts to avoid suicide, though.

She wasn't struck off, even after the court case, (although her husband was), so presumably she knows what she's talking about and is a caring, helpful and very rich doctor.

Helen Webberley:

This is her husband:

Dr gave sex change drugs to trans patients 'without assessment' including to child, 9

A retired consultant wrongly prescribed sex-change treatments to seven young transgender patients, including a teenager who killed themselves months later, and a nine-year-old child.

'Everyone shouting #BoycottCostaCoffee because it “promotes the mutilation of teenage girls” have completely missed the point. Top surgery is a completely routine and normal procedure that helps reduce gender dysphoria in trans men - a debilitating mental health issue that sadly takes so many lives every year. Top surgery doesn’t harm people - it saves lives.'

caringcarer · 01/08/2023 09:47

No more Costa coffee for me now then. Thankyou, for bringing this to my attention.

Tryingmuchharder · 01/08/2023 09:48

Dr Webberley is very rich following the current trend of thinking you are in the wrong body. Suicide if they cannot chop their breasts off. Rubbish, show the figures for that. They cannot and don't they just scream about how many lives they have saved... umm wait until years later and the detransitioners need even more mental health support because the hormones and surgery have wrecked their lives

OP posts:
DisquietintheRanks · 01/08/2023 09:48

I would very much like to see Dr Webberley's evidence base but suspect there just isn't one.

It does beggar belief - in most of medicine everything has to be tested to the hilt or is very clearly a trial. Why is this so different?

Gilmorehill · 01/08/2023 09:49

@ArabeIIaScott are you actually trying to say that it’s a reasonable thing to do?

tedgran · 01/08/2023 09:49

Loads of angry comments in Times online, including some from women who have mastectomies due ti breast cancer.

Tryingmuchharder · 01/08/2023 09:51

Changing a body using surgery or hormones means the person thinks they are closer to the sex they feel they want to be, but because they are never ever going to be that sex no matter what they do they will always fail. Then have to live with that failure.

Sex Reassignment Doesn’t Work. Here Is the Evidence.

Sex “reassignment” doesn’t work. It’s impossible to “reassign” someone’s sex physically, and attempting to do so doesn’t produce good outcomes psychosocially.

The notion that girls/women who do thus would otherwise have committed suicide us easily countered by the following question:

Where are the statistics for such suicides in previous years?

And why did none of us know such a girl/woman who committed suicide because she couldn't get a double mastectomy ad she believed she was a man?

WestSouthWest · 01/08/2023 09:53

This is really bizarre from Costa and don’t understand how a promotion like this is relevant to a chain of coffee shops. I expect this is about promoting inclusivity, but it’s a strange way to do that. Do shirtless people routinely order coffee? I could understand it if it was an advertisement for beachwear…

Hankunamatata · 01/08/2023 09:54

If trans men want to remove their breasts then it up to them. I do think totally inappropriate for costa to use the image, surely a trans person's journey is private?
