Costa using Pride image of girl with breasts removed to support trans?

"Costa Coffee was today accused of glamourising 'complex and dangerous surgery' by covering a van with a cartoon image featuring mastectomy scars.
The UK's largest coffee chain defended its use of the image to promote 'inclusivity and diversity' but was branded 'crass and irresponsible' and 'absolutely bonkers' – and there were calls for a boycott of the company on social media.
The image, depicting an androgynous-looking character wearing long shorts with scars below each nipple, is taken from a mural designed by the chain for Brighton and Hove Pride last year."

I find the attempt to 'normalise' the removal of perfectly healthy breasts because someone feels more masculine is wrong. AIBU

People? You mean 16 year old girls?

'Fifty-one teenagers aged 16 and 17 who were born as females were sent to hospitals in England to undergo further assessment for “specialist chest reconstruction” over the past six years, The Telegraph reported. In theory, those as young as 17 can undergo the procedure, and children aged 16 have been “referred for assessment for surgery”.

Still children then.

Sad that they cannot rely on adults to protect them from this social contagion and their need to conform to what they think a girl or woman should look like, feel like etc so decide they must be a man then! Mental health help needed.

Wtf idiots

nonmerci99 · 01/08/2023 10:13

Appalling. Fortunately Costa Coffee is utter dross, so very easy to continue to avoid.

loislovesstewie · 01/08/2023 10:14

Is there any point in telling them to just sell bloody coffee? No virtue signalling. No trying to be inclusive , and failing at it? Just sell coffee.

Gameoflifechampion · 01/08/2023 10:15

Grim.

I work in marketing and many people are retraining because of shite like this.

E.g someone on the marketing / PR team at Costa had this 'idea'. Spoke up and everyone else on that team are too scared to say no because they'll get labelled as a "phobic" of some type, it'll get escalated to HR and your job is a goner.

Sad times for all.

I could not care less. If someone wants to chop off their boobs, it's up to them. People are free to do whatever body modifications they like to themselves. If they regret it later, that's their problem.

So we just allow young adults with MH issues to have healthy body parts cut off do we?

Whatwouldscullydo · 01/08/2023 10:16

Oh ffs.

Deliberately creating disabilities with unnecessary surgery is hardly something to glorify and promote. What on earth are Costa thinking.

If it was truly life saving we'd have been tripping over bodies for decades befire they decided operating on teenage girls was a thing.

Some would. They don't care that children are being affirmed and guided in their belief they are in the 'wrong body'.

Many in society don't care if it doesn't affect them personally.

This is the response I have just submitted through their website complaints

Disgusted, absolutely sickened, horrified beyond words at portrayal of mastectomy scars on advert. I have had a double mastectomy because of cancer - my scars are twisted, swollen and painful and will be for life - how dare you display this as neat, tidy, and desirable. Soooo intrusive, a vile vile invasion of privacy and utterly false. I will never frequent a shop which advertises by fantasising about my scars and disabilities. Lost my custom for good, my daughter is crying over this foulness

I’m so sorry, @Market1 and appalled on your behalf. I’m also sending an email of strongly worded complaint. 💐for you and all other women who are personally affected by the unbelievably crass behaviour of this company

ChateauMargaux · 01/08/2023 10:17

Insane...

Women are objectified because of their breasts.

We are not allowed to show pictures of women breastfeeding and indeed it is not been long since women were asked to leave coffee shops for breastfeeding (and lingering over their drinks).

But breasts are seen as a hateful part of being a woman if you reject female stereotypes and should be removed but if you are a man who identifies as a woman, breasts are desirable and should be flaunted.. but not shown bare.

Women's breasts are more likely to be shown if they have been surgically enhanced or in this case, removed.

We rarely see images of surgically altered males.

Yes but it's the NHS that has to pick up the pieces and foot the bill. No wonder it won't exist in a few years when it is used for things like this

Indeed the rubbish about preventing suicide if they don't have their bodies mutilated is a myth. Where were all the suicides due to being the in wrong body BEFORE the push to mutilate bodies and give puberty blockers.

Even children?

Or do you have an age limit

Who is "we"? I'm not in a position to make decisions for other people. Grown adults can do what they like.

ResisterRex · 01/08/2023 10:19

This really is upsetting. And it's so public as well. How do you explain this to a primary aged child? How do you help a teenage daughter who's struggling with puberty, to see that this is dangerous and to be ignored?

I hope the ASA comes down hard on them.

When the public inquiry into this comes - as surely it must - these people will have to explain themselves. Why did a chain of terrible tasting, weak coffee shops, decide they knew what's best for minors with serious mental health conditions, and see fit to preach to us about it?

SunnyEgg · 01/08/2023 10:19

If adults do all sorts of things that’s up to them, no need for marketing to fall over backwards to show it.

Tryingmuchharder · 01/08/2023 10:19

There are a growing number of young women who have gone through body mutilating changes and puberty blockers in the US coming forward to say they made a huge mistake. It's sad to watch their stories and they will never be able to reverse the damage done to them physically or mentally. Hopefully the lawsuits will start to make the doctors who make money out of this think!

Not children, no. 18 and upwards, same as everything.

Market1 · 01/08/2023 10:21

does anyone have a link to explain where this advert is being shown please? - I am going to contact the ASA

We should all contact the ASA,

They will ask where the offending ad is being shown

VanillaImpulse · 01/08/2023 10:21

The first thought when I saw this image was of a breast cancer mastectomy after having watched Sarah Brent's cancer documentary the night before. Some people have no choice but to have their breasts removed. To do it voluntarily and for it to be glorified is just unreal.

So if your child grows up to do this and suffers physically and bitterly regrets it later, will that just be their problem or could your child's misery hurt you too?

Yes people can do what they please but don't you want your child to do what's best for them and be given good advice and not damage themselves, whatever age they are?

Tryingmuchharder · 01/08/2023 10:21

Beezknees · 01/08/2023 10:18

People in society ARE in a position to question whether having healthy breasts of girls aged 16 and 17 cut off because they are questioning whether they are in the wrong body or we could all just shrug our shoulders and turn the other way.

I can’t stop adults doing things to themselves, as long as I don’t need to pay for it in any way, but we can have better decisions in marketing which is what this thread is about.
