To think my neighbour should have been more grateful for my chard

So neighbours have chickens and bring us eggs, which is fab as we no longer keep chickens.

I offered her some chard in exchange which she happily accepted.

She dropped some more eggs over this week and I asked her if she had enjoyed the chard. She said it was too big but ate it rather than throwing it away. Fwiw it was about the size of normal spinach.

I mean seriously! I’ll have it back if it’s not up to standard.

Dropped some courgettes over today, one was slightly large, will await the comments

she was being honest - not everyone smiles, lies and tells you what they think you want to hear.

BoobsOnTheMoon · 22/07/2023 21:01

Oh come on. Nobody, but nobody is ever grateful for a marrow (and yes that's what a large courgette is and I'll hear no argument otherwise). My heart sinks when my neighbour approaches with one in his arms Grin

CorBlimeyGovnr · 22/07/2023 21:05

I’m not sure what you were expecting…. She falls to her knees and wails her eternal gratitude?

It wasn’t that big, just not teeny tiny

Gah, hate chard and courgettes. I’d not be grateful if you unloaded those on me at all. Why not ask neighbour what she might like or need in exchange for the eggs?

Of course not, just thanks as we do for the eggs 🤷‍♂️

I did and she gratefully accepted!

All hail the chard.

What were you expecting?!

Drews · 22/07/2023 21:08

Was the chard for her or the chickens?

You are being ridiculous.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 22/07/2023 21:10

Relax, she can feed it to the chickens if she likes.

I really like chard, over the decades I have discovered, I am not quite normal.

Maybe she was hinting that you should have cut it back before it got that large, to get more flavour and a better texture?

AnnaTortoiseshell · 22/07/2023 21:12

I think these responses are mean! I’d be so gutted if I grew something and someone was so rude about it. Not like she needs to fall over herself complimenting the chard but if you don’t have anything nice to say…

Chappers001 · 22/07/2023 21:12

I think your thinking about it too much, it's just a vegetable 😂

Misspinkdiditinthelibrary · 22/07/2023 21:13

Chard is horrible, I'd have fed it to the goat.

Courgettes - now you're talking !

How many more expressions of gratitude do you want?

You asked her opinion on the chard and she gave it, don't ask questions if you don't want a truthful answer.

I've made courgette and ginger jam from the huge 'uns.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 22/07/2023 21:38

Most people have had their taste buds acclimatised to baby leaf spinach.
They're gonna be in for a shock when we all have to eat more seasonally and locally.

Meanwhile, her chickens will appreciate it and produce better eggs.
