To think my neighbour should have been more grateful for my chard

So neighbours have chickens and bring us eggs, which is fab as we no longer keep chickens.

I offered her some chard in exchange which she happily accepted.

She dropped some more eggs over this week and I asked her if she had enjoyed the chard. She said it was too big but ate it rather than throwing it away. Fwiw it was about the size of normal spinach.

I mean seriously! I’ll have it back if it’s not up to standard.

Dropped some courgettes over today, one was slightly large, will await the comments

Next time she gives you eggs, say "hmm, thanks, yolks were a bit pallid for my liking but they were edible" That'll learn her

I understand where you're coming from because I tend to take things a bit personally too, but I think you'll just have to let it go. The sting will be out after a good night's rest 😊

thank you. I would have kept it and happily eaten it if I'd know it would be such a burden to her!

I really have let it go, was just a silly OP really

I love chard but not in the middle of summer. It's a winter thing.

Baby chard is lovely in the summer, though I agree that autumn/winter is a better time for the bigger/older/tougher chard

😀one time she did give us some egg she had found under the hedge and they were all rotten. I will never forget the smell!

It’s possible I am finding this thread even more entertaining that the penis beaker thread of 2014 (or was it 2015?! 🤷‍♀️).

Which makes me feel quite old!!!

Gift me courgette FLOWERS (to stuff with cheese, rice, seasoning, maybe a little spice) and I’ll give you all the eggs you want.

I’d pass on the Marrow and Chard 🙈

FunnysInLaJardin · 22/07/2023 21:08

I did and she gratefully accepted!

I’m confused- was she grateful or not grateful?

MyGuineaPigIs007 · 22/07/2023 22:29

OP, my guinea pigs have just reminded me they would love to be your neighbour. They love chard. They remind me to tell you to send some their way! Wheek! Wheek!

Lougle · 22/07/2023 22:30

Marrow is delish. Sauteed in butter with salt and pepper. No water.

Evenstar · 22/07/2023 22:31

Even my guinea pigs hated chard, I stopped having a veg box because they kept sending it 😖

I have chickens and would be happy to have any veg except chard in exchange for some eggs.

I just haven't got space for chard in the summer.

I sowed some today for my autumn into spring veg plot. It will stay in the seed tray til September.

TheModHatter · 22/07/2023 22:38

I love chard.

I used to get enough for regular meals growing it in plant pots.

YANBU.

It isn't that hard
When receiving some chard
To acknowledge the debt
(Let alone the courgette)

But if your veg is immense
You should not take offence
If your egg lady caller
Prefers something smaller.

😂👌🏼 this is gold

i don’t think I’ve ever seen the word “chard” so well-used in my life!

I kind of get where OP is coming from though, my nan does similar

I went out of my way to take her a piece of cake id made for DS 1st birthday. Spent HOURS lovingly making it etc.
went all the way up there with a slice…
Shes munching away and starts commenting “oh you could have added a touch of water for a bit more moisture” etc

Like thanks but… I didn’t ask for feedback Mary Berry 😂
Luckily I know her ways by now and wasn’t really too put out by it

Gah, hate chard and courgettes. I’d not be grateful if you unloaded those on me at all. Why not ask neighbour what she might like or need in exchange for the eggs?

The neighbour could have said "no thanks"

Jongleterre · 22/07/2023 22:56

I love a simple salad of chard leaves, feta cheese and caramelised onions.

echt · 22/07/2023 23:01

I grow lots of rainbow chard and ask neighbours if they want it. They say yes and I hand it over. I know very well it'll be guinea pig food if not used quickly.

Amazingly the best source of great chard recipes I found was "Simple French Cuisine". I say amazingly as the French are not the first people I'd usually go to for veggie recipes.

Smashedsmashed · 22/07/2023 23:01

We once grew rainbow chard, it was bloody horrible. Even the hens only ate the leaves. They left the core.
Once forgot a courgette, it was hidden. Became a huge marrow. That lived in the fridge for about 2 months until I chopped up and threw in compost bin.

decaffonlypls · 22/07/2023 23:08

BoobsOnTheMoon · 22/07/2023 21:01

Oh come on. Nobody, but nobody is ever grateful for a marrow (and yes that's what a large courgette is and I'll hear no argument otherwise). My heart sinks when my neighbour approaches with one in his arms Grin

I love courgettes my dad grows them for me. I'd be very happy with chard

AIBot · 22/07/2023 23:42

YANBU 😂

Sod the Guinea pigs, I love chard and I use the leaves in place of spinach in spanakopita…mmmm. And boil up the stalks, drain and grill with melted cheddar.

TRexTara · 23/07/2023 03:49

What the fuck is chard anyway? It sounds very stringy to me.
