To think my neighbour should have been more grateful for my chard

So neighbours have chickens and bring us eggs, which is fab as we no longer keep chickens.

I offered her some chard in exchange which she happily accepted.

She dropped some more eggs over this week and I asked her if she had enjoyed the chard. She said it was too big but ate it rather than throwing it away. Fwiw it was about the size of normal spinach.

I mean seriously! I’ll have it back if it’s not up to standard.

Dropped some courgettes over today, one was slightly large, will await the comments

Not sure if this has been done yet, but if the neighbour is slightly in fear of a glut of "too big" chard coming her way, she is almost certainly blowing in her mouth organ and singing:

And it's a chard,
It's a chard
It's a chard,
It's a chard
It's a chard rain’s a‐gonna fall

I thought Chard was short for Chardonnay.

And if you don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chard (never break the chard)

ohsaywhatnow · 24/07/2023 12:57

If my marrow never comes
Will you still love my marrow
Proud Marrow
Little green courgette

Hit me with your big courgette
Hit me, hit me
Hit me slowly hit me quick
Hit me, hit me, hit me

FayCarew · 24/07/2023 13:33

😁why am I imagining Mrs Hughes from Downton Abbey saying "you make it sound quite risque!"

Just because we are on the subject of courgettes, here is my small puppy with some big courgettes a couple of years ago

To think my neighbour should have been more grateful for my chard

Thank you @Random789 , what a beautiful puppy.

And they call it puppy luu-u-urve....

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/07/2023 18:49

God, I hope that is one of those "small vs far away" things, otherwise those courgettes are humongous.

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 25/07/2023 05:57

My first response was to suspect they were sneaky marrows posing as courgettes....

But on the other hand,

Well, the pup was very tiny. But the courgettes were well huge, too.
Too big even to palm off on the neighbours. It only takes a courgette about 12 seconds to grow from edible to triffid.

FunnysInLaJardin · 25/07/2023 10:18

Love that photo @Random789 !

You will all undoubtedly be pleased and relieved to hear that the courgettes I delivered on Saturday were a big hit!

Maybe your chard recipe as well?

GolgafrinchamB · 25/07/2023 10:45

Happy ending at last!

OP, if you do get any ginormous courgettes, offer them to her for the hens. Hens bloody love giant marrows.

But she right about the chard - nice coloured stems but awful stuff, even the hens ignore it!

FunnysInLaJardin · 25/07/2023 22:48

Oddly when we had hens they loved the chard, but wouldn’t touch a courgette with a barge pole!

am thinking that maybe I just grow superior chard 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's because they only like the seedy but in the middle so the courgette has to be absolutely ginormous and beyond anyone's ability to make it palatable for human consumption, judging by my chickens eating habits.
