Can anyone identify this… could it be illegal?

It looks like some sort of oil. You can get THC (cannabis) infused oil, and therefore capsules like this but I don’t think they’re common in the U.K. (if that’s where you’re posting from). You can also get CBD oil capsules which aren’t illegals and wouldn’t get you high.

No one can guarantee what this is from a photo though.

Looks like a Cod Liver Oil or CBD capsule, both legal and don't get you high etc.

Could be CBD or something... How old is he? Is he into health/ fitness (just asking as it might be some kind of supplement)?

It doesn't look like anything illegal to me but I confess limited knowledge of everything that's out there at the moment.

As a parent worried it's something illegal, I think OP is very sensible to go armed with some knowledge before confronting a teenager. A parent asking blind questions with no knowledge is likely just to make them close up and be more secretive.

I don't think it is an illegal drug though. It looks mass manufactured like an oil supplement.

It looks like cod liver oil to me. Similar.to even primrose capsules too. Does it have an odour?

I found b12, fibre and probiotic combo absolutely great. Except that I popped the b12 once when we got to the bar because I forgot before and got some side eyes 😂
It's basically what's in the overpriced hangover tablets.

Break it open and smell it. Cod liver will be easy to identify

Lots of supplements look like this. Cod liver oil, Omega oils, evening primrose, starflower oil. It's a mainstream manufacture process to produce a capsule like that.

As someone who saw their friends do a lot of drugs when younger (granted 10 years ago). I've never seen anything like this before and I can't think of any illegal substance that comes in this form in that tablet. GHB can come in liquid form but I can't see it being in a capsule this size or in a capsule at all.

Very luch looks like a dietary supplement. I would not worry at all. If your DS lived with you, you'd very likely notice if he had been out and taking drugs.

I’m not talking about a full chemical analysis but rather ‘this is consistent with a prescribed medication’ or ‘this is a cod liver oil tablet’.

I know that, but there are many different things it could be and there's also the issue of confidentiality. I wouldn't discuss other people's medication with you, I'd only discuss it with you if it was yours and then you'd know what it is! Plus, what if I was wrong? I'd only be guessing and we are advised not to play that game.
