He was possibly conned by a dealer

Especially over a capsule the op can not be that naive her son will think she's stupid. She will make herself look very silly.

This is a cod liver oil / fish oil nutritional supplement capsule. Entirely harmless.

Update…. Apparently they are cod liver oil. His mate gave one to him when he stayed the night at his. He is 16 and I still do his washing!

Yes it looks like a cod Liver Oil tablet, but it also looks like Temazepam - in the 80s the junkies where I lived called them jellies.

I believe they are the 'blank' pills that you take on your 'week off' from the pill to have your period. They are designed so that you continue to take a pill each day to prevent confusion.

I was a nurse back in the 80s and temazepam was given out as night sleeping tablets back then. The OP's tablet is much longer in shape. Temazepam was like a rugby ball shape.
