Wondering how common it still is for the male ‘head of the household’ to sit at the head of the table.

YANBU= yes he does
YABU = no (or sometimes / not deliberately)

Yes he does, but subconciously a lot of the time. We come from a country where this isn't out of the ordinary, but if I asked to sit there/one of the kids he wouldn't bat an eye lid at moving.

SallyWD · 09/07/2023 13:05

No, I don't even know where the head of the table would be on our table!

Pleasemrstweedie · 09/07/2023 13:05

Yes, he does. I sit the other end, closest to the kitchen. I wouldn't read anything into it.

roarrfeckingroar · 09/07/2023 13:05

No.

Girasoli · 09/07/2023 13:07

No, although I remember my grandad telling me that when he went to visit my uncle and his wife in Chile they'd always put him at the head of the table.

I'm pretty sure my 3 year olds think women are the "heads of households" as he refers to our house as mummy's house (DH lives here too), my parents house as "nonnas house", their car as "nonnas car" etc.

Natsku · 09/07/2023 13:08

No, DS sits at the "head" of the table because that's the best place to fit his junior chair. Before that we all sat on the sides so no one at the head.

HappyAsASandboy · 09/07/2023 13:09

My dad always did/does. My husband doesn't.

The highchair is at one end of our table and a child is at the other, as that is what gives DH and I the most space!

youwouldthink · 09/07/2023 13:09

Round table!

SilkTrees · 09/07/2023 13:10

No, it's 2023. He sits at the seat nearest the door to the kitchen, because he does the cooking. DS has always sat at the 'head' because it was the best place for his high chair, even though he's 11 now...

FlyingMonkeyNever · 09/07/2023 13:10

Sometimes. Sometimes not. I do mostly.
It’s all misogynistic shit.
DS likes DH to sit next to him, which means DH will not be sat at the head of the table.

MissCalamity · 09/07/2023 13:10

No, he sits in the living room. While 2 DC's and I sit at the table. There is space for him, but he has to move a laptop bag and he can never be bothered. 🙄

Coffeeandcrocs · 09/07/2023 13:32

Nope, round table here!

WeWereInParis · 09/07/2023 13:34

No, DD2 does as that's the best place for the high chair. Once she grows out of that no one will, we'll sit with two people each side of the table.

STEMAndStuff · 09/07/2023 13:36

No, I do.

GoldDuster · 09/07/2023 13:37

No 'male head of household' bullshit, plus we have a round table so it's technically impossible should anyone get any ideas

StColumbofNavron · 09/07/2023 13:37

He does in our house, but that’s because our table is in the kitchen and because of layout that is the only space he fits - he is bulkier than the rest of us.

GoldDuster · 09/07/2023 13:39

Out of interest, what qualifies one to be the head of the household in 2023?

smilesup · 09/07/2023 13:39

God no. Fuck that. He would not be married to me if he even considered it.

JeandeServiette · 09/07/2023 13:41

Nope. Doesn't carve the joint either.

And the DC when asked, assumed I was "head of the household" (whatever that means). Presumably because I give off competent managerial vibes around here.

Expressoqueen · 09/07/2023 13:42

In our house the Dcat is very much in charge

Nesbi · 09/07/2023 13:42

The kids sit at either end of our table

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 09/07/2023 13:43

There's only two of us, so we both sit at the head of the table Grin

maddiemookins16mum · 09/07/2023 13:44

We have an oval table, DH and I sit at the top ends facing each other, DD and MIL on a side. We have the better chairs (carver chairs).

disclaimer: it seats 6, I don’t live at Downton Abbey.

CecilyP · 09/07/2023 13:45

With a square table everyone does. Even an oblong table has 2 ends! Who’s to decide which one is the head!

GoldDuster · 09/07/2023 13:39

Some would argue (not me), the one paying for it.
