Wondering how common it still is for the male ‘head of the household’ to sit at the head of the table.

YANBU= yes he does
YABU = no (or sometimes / not deliberately)

No lol, what a weird thought!

blueshoes · 09/07/2023 15:30

Yes, dh sits at the head of the table. That is because it is nearest to the kitchen and he does all the cooking.

Glittertwins · 09/07/2023 15:31

We sit at the long sides . We both sit at the end that's easier to get in and out of for the kitchen. Growing up, the table was oval so no "head" there either.

SamanthaCaine · 09/07/2023 15:40

No. Because we have an equi-table seating arrangement.

Hibiscrubbed · 09/07/2023 15:48

Nope. I do.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/07/2023 15:48

I'm a heathen and hate sitting at the table so I'm usually found on the sofa.

If I do sit at the table (high days and holidays) then I sit closest to the kitchen as I do the cooking (and have to run out half way through the meal for something I've forgotten!) DH/DC sit anywhere other than my seat. There's nothing conscious about it and no set seating.

Screamingabdabz · 09/07/2023 15:50

Thank God I live in a house where me and my kids wouldn’t even have thought this misogynistic bullshit was a thing.

UsingChangeofName · 09/07/2023 15:55

Well, our dining table is round, so all very democratic there.

Our kitchen table does have dh and I at either end, because historically we were bigger than the dc so had the ends which give you a bit more room than 2 people sitting next to one another on
the sides, so the dc - being smaller - sat there.
No idea how to tell which end is the 'head' though.

Seashor · 09/07/2023 15:58

We have a round table.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 09/07/2023 16:01

Nope. We sit two on each side. We do always sit in the same places though!

WinchSparkle80 · 09/07/2023 16:02

Large rectangular table, DH and DD sit one side, me and DS the other… at Xmas he might sit at one end nearest Kitchen because he cooks the Xmas Dinner!

IncomingTraffic · 09/07/2023 16:05

DS3 sits at the head of the table in this house. It’s where his chair is, so that’s where he goes. It’s the most convenient place for him really.

Otherwise no one would be at the head of the table. .

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/07/2023 16:05

Not normally. Ironically he does it there are guests because that's the shittist chair location. Poor bloke.

caringcarer · 09/07/2023 16:15

Girasoli · 09/07/2023 13:07

No, although I remember my grandad telling me that when he went to visit my uncle and his wife in Chile they'd always put him at the head of the table.

I'm pretty sure my 3 year olds think women are the "heads of households" as he refers to our house as mummy's house (DH lives here too), my parents house as "nonnas house", their car as "nonnas car" etc.

😂😂😂 Smart boy.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/07/2023 16:17

There isn’t a ‘head’ of our oval table. ;

inloveonholiday · 09/07/2023 16:17

Yes

diamondpony80 · 09/07/2023 16:17

Table is round & we all sit wherever. Growing up we sat at a square table and always had our own places but there was definitely no “head” of the table

Greedybilly · 09/07/2023 16:18

Nope what with it not being the 1900's and all that.

ApocalypseNowt · 09/07/2023 16:22

No, DC2 does. Not sure why, that's just how it's ended up.

DH is made to sit in the crappy corner that's a bit hard to get to. He doesn't mind thoughGrin

honeylulu · 09/07/2023 16:23

No, usually husband and daughter sit on the side and me and son sit at the ends but not always the same end. If it's two or three of us I'll sit at the side but again not always in the same location. We don't have designated spots. The ends are probably the least roomy spots so not especially desirable! We do tend to sit in the same spots in the living room but it's just personal preference not a hierarchy. At home my mum sat at one end. Dad sat on one side and my sister and I in the other side, no one at the other end and I've no idea why. My dad did refer to himself as head of the household though and that annoyed me even as a child.

icanflytoday · 09/07/2023 16:23

We both sit at either end with the kids in the middle. His seat also happens to be closest to the kitchen as he's the cook!

mondaytosunday · 09/07/2023 16:25

My mother would as she carved/served the food from there. I think my dad might of at Christmas.
My husband was the cook so when entertaining in the dining room he sat at the head, on family dinners one of the kids did as that's the way it worked out with the layout.

MerryMarigold · 09/07/2023 16:34

YABU. No he doesn't. We have 5 in our family. Youngest DC sits at the head, or possibly 'tail' of the table.

Emeraldrings · 09/07/2023 16:39

If they sit in the dinning room to eat my dad is head of the table. If they eat in the kitchen my mum is

In our house we don't have assigned seats so it varies who is head of the table

elastamum · 09/07/2023 16:41

Our table is round. I have always had round tables find them much more sociable.
