Wondering how common it still is for the male ‘head of the household’ to sit at the head of the table.

YANBU= yes he does
YABU = no (or sometimes / not deliberately)

We're philistines and eat on the sofa (just the two of us though).

Same here! Hi Phillistine compadre.😂

caringcarer · 09/07/2023 16:47

My Dad always used to sit at the head of the table. Now we have oval table and we don't sit in the same places. Everyone sits where they want so first come first served. Whoever sits at what could be the head is nearest to the kitchen so often pops up to refill the gravy jug or the water jug.

weqa · 09/07/2023 16:56

No, our child sits at the head of the table!

Hi! We find dinner goes down better with a bit of Succession 😂

saltinesandcoffeecups · 09/07/2023 17:07

Growing up -rectangular table me and my sister sat at the head and my parents either both on one side or if we pulled the table out one on each side. I suspect this had more to do with keeping me and my sister as far apart as possible.

Current house me and DH have a round table and we sit sort of next to each other.

randomchap · 09/07/2023 17:16

I sit at the head of the table. It's a kitchen diner and it's the chair closest to the kitchen. Makes it easier when cooking/serving

FatCatBum · 09/07/2023 17:44

Head of the household? What a ridiculously outdated notion

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 09/07/2023 17:52

No, I’m our old house I did but not intentionally and in our new house DS does. No idea why we changed, it’s the same table and we usually stick to the same chairs 🤷‍♀️.

DeNeushoornHeeftEenHoorn · 09/07/2023 17:57

I live alone so I am both my entire household and the head of it (and this sort of malarky is why I'm so fucking happy about that).

I sit wherever I fancy for supper, at my kitchen bar or at the dining table.

Leastsaidsoonestscrewed · 09/07/2023 17:59

Yeah - cos it's nearest to the kitchen and he can fetch anything from the kitchen he might have forgotten whilst cooking and serving up more than 50% of the time...

MrsHsGirl · 09/07/2023 18:00

Husband doesn't.

Dad doesn't necessarily sit at the head of the table but we do all stand at the table and wait for him to pick his spot before we sit down which sounds pretty ridiculous now I've written it down

lanthanum · 09/07/2023 18:01

I suppose mine does, but we don't think of it as "the head" - we think of it as the end nearest the hob, and he does the cooking so it's most convenient. Anyone else sitting there would be in the way.

GoblinAeroplane · 09/07/2023 18:02

Father: yes, because he does 100% of the cooking; genuinely don't think my mother could turn the cooker on if you paid her

DH: no, we sit across from each other at the middle with our kids either side of each of us to keep meal times nonsense free. We are dinner time Switzerlands.

SoWhatEh · 09/07/2023 18:03

No, unless we have loads of people to dinner, then we each sit at the ends, mainly to ensure we can see every one and check everyone has what they need/someone to talk to.

My dad always did. No one else could sit there.

chickabilla · 09/07/2023 18:04

DD does, because she wants to sit next to Mummy AND Daddy.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 09/07/2023 18:09

Circular table here, chosen deliberately for the very reason that nobody could sit at the head.

takealettermsjones · 09/07/2023 18:28

We all sit wherever the toddler demands we sit 😅

SBHon · 09/07/2023 18:29

MissCalamity · 09/07/2023 13:10

No, he sits in the living room. While 2 DC's and I sit at the table. There is space for him, but he has to move a laptop bag and he can never be bothered. 🙄

This made me sad and annoyed equally.

MavisBeacon1234 · 09/07/2023 18:34

My dad does, my granddad had his chair at the head of the table. My husband only because he needs to move the chair there or we would be sitting side by side and that's just weird lol

Notellinganyone · 09/07/2023 18:42

😂

TheCyclingGorilla · 09/07/2023 18:51

No we have a square table so everyone is equal! Not by design but because of space.

MargaretThursday · 09/07/2023 19:04

We have a round table.
It means that the children can still argue about where "their space" is to the mm and it be totally irrelevant.
Apparently the table was moved round the other day. That meant that dd2 and ds were practically sitting in each others' laps because one thought it had been moved one way, the other thought the other way and neither would give way. they're more than old enough to know better.

And this is why my parents set me and my sister up on opposite ends the farthest distance possible 🤣

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 09/07/2023 19:51

No ! . I will dish the dinner , they sit wherever they want , they eat . 9/10 my eldest son is in the kitchen anyway watching t.v. anywhere he is comfortable. so he eats there and everyone takes another seat.

I wouldn't know where the head of the table is anyway

sueelleker · 09/07/2023 20:01
