To wonder if Labour actually will be any better?

I think like most people I am keen to see the back of the current bunch, but I am not confident that anything will massively change for the better. Maybe that’s a bit pessimistic, but I feel that while some things will improve some will get worse - and some sort of at the same time, so I’m expecting my salary to go up but also my workload to go up!

Thinking back to when Labour were last in power it was another world, really. Interested in views.

I'm voting for the Greens. At least they haven't done anything that annoys me yet.

Addicted2Kale · 01/07/2023 02:13

The Tories are garbage currently and are taking from the taxpayer to give to the rich. By taxpayer, I'm including those up to £150,000 a year.

Problem is, I see Labour as only pandering to non producers/contributers, non tax payers, net state recipients, criminals, "the cultural lunatic fringe" and freeloaders. I don't fit in any of these groups, thus Labour don't speak to me. We're in a very bad place politically.

Florenz · 01/07/2023 02:56

Politics in general in this country is in a sorry state.

I'd imagine the tories will raise the inheritance tax threshold and that'll be labour out again.

Given that only about 6% of estates are liable for inheritance tax it’s extremely unlikely that it would be of any relevance at all.

MavisMcMinty · 01/07/2023 06:30

Johnson could go to Ukraine for the public adulation and adoration he needs and craves. He won’t get it here in the UK, apart from the Dorries, Bamfords and Rees-Moggs. I think he should go there, and win the war for them.

I don't like to tell you this, but Rishi Sunak has been PM since late September.

And Green Card Rishi with his tax dodging, still has investments in Russia wife is so much better? Mr Eat Out To Spread It About?
"Are you in business?"

AgathaSpencerGregson · 01/07/2023 08:02

Tax dodging implies illegality, of which there was none. Reported for defamation.

Does anyone else love these types of threads....in all the years I've been on MN, I've never seen one single post that would influence my voting in a GE in any way whatsoever.

Yes, I love them too! This one's just given me a very entertaining half hour. Played my own personal version of bullshit bingo, waiting for all the usual arguments to be trotted out. And no, nothing has ever influenced me either.

So why did Mrs Sunak change her tax status then? Dodging doesn’t imply illegality at all, by the way.

Mischance · 01/07/2023 08:27

It's not just about what a new government might do but whether they have integrity and decency.
And whether they are aware of and care about those who are disadvantaged.

Whoever gets into power will have an unholy mess to disentangle: after effects of Brexit and covid, the run-down of public services etc. It will take time, but it would be good to have people in charge who can be relied on to operate with honesty.

penelopelady · 01/07/2023 08:51

The bar is set so low it would be difficult to be any worse frankly.

AdamRyan · 01/07/2023 09:51

Terryer · 30/06/2023 21:37

Of course it will get worse. The markets will crash the day Labour get into power for a start.

Haha as if
They'll be relieved

Lambiriyani · 01/07/2023 09:56

Been trying to learn more about the Tony Blair premiership. Was the economy "good" under Blair? I see strong and stable economic growth and a stable debt to GDP ratio.

JustAsYouSuggestPressedAndDressed · 30/06/2023 21:00

Known by who?

Johnson gets the most praise from Zelensky, certainly of any European leader. But I suppose that doesn’t count.

Meanwhile Macron is derided while France burns and Scholz is failing in Germany (the rise of the far right in Germany is very worrying).

And even if there was a lack of diplomatic standing with the UK government (there isn’t), I struggle to see any similarity between Sunak and Trump or Starmer and Biden.

Google it, there’s literally thousands of articles to choose from - heavily represented in foreign publications.

I find it hard to reconcile your statement when the things you list about Labour are very much covered by the current government who you declare as garbage.

What does a political party that represents you actually sound like then?

I imagine so. The end to the volatility of the last few years will be a huge relief. Nothing will ever adversely affect the markets as much as Truss and Kwarteng managed.

beguilingeyes · 01/07/2023 10:51

Claiming non-dom status while living at no.10? Seriously evasive if nothing else. Taxes are for the little people.

Fuelled by high immigration and the start of low productivity. It’s easy to massage GDP figures by opening the door to low skilled migration, while damaging average incomes. All the problems we have today can be traced back to nu labour policies. Unfortunately the Tories have failed to do anything about it and just made it worse.

Tax avoidance then , Pedanto.

woodhill · 01/07/2023 11:17

@Swrigh1234

Yes problematic and didn't help the people here apart from the wealthy

Used to be a lot better in the 90s and housing was more in line with wages not like now.

You are correct that the markets don't like volatility. The Kwasi Truss plans were a disaster. But a Labour government is an unknown quantity and will frighten the markets,in the short term at least.

Yeah cos they've done so well under this current shower...

Labour govt was an unknown quantity in 1997 and I don't remember that causing market issues
