To wonder if Labour actually will be any better?

I think like most people I am keen to see the back of the current bunch, but I am not confident that anything will massively change for the better. Maybe that’s a bit pessimistic, but I feel that while some things will improve some will get worse - and some sort of at the same time, so I’m expecting my salary to go up but also my workload to go up!

Thinking back to when Labour were last in power it was another world, really. Interested in views.

When will the next election be held do we think, out of interest? I know on paper it’s January ‘25 but will it be sooner?

Really interesting question.
I think May next year - a bit of sunshine and the hope of summer holidays around the corner.
But who knows. They might watch the polls and keeping hoping there is something around the corner and so leave it as late as possible.

lSo Zelensky’s praise for Johnson must make Zelensky a right clown, surely?m

<sigh>

The U.K. has rightly stood beside Ukraine. Any other pm would have done the same. Johnson wrapped himself in a Union Jack and made it all about him, and the gullible thought it was all about him. Is that what you mean?

Sweetashunni · 30/06/2023 21:53

Ah; I wondered about spring, but thought with their poll performance surely they would kick the can down the road a bit. Just imagine a general election during a cost of living crisis winter 😒 it’ll be like a Dickensian novel..

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2023 21:55

Ambulances queued up around A&E departments don't make for good election campaigns.

Sweetashunni · 30/06/2023 21:57

Good point.

Ah, a “<sigh>”, the leper’s bell of the self-important.

No, I don’t think the scope and speed of Johnson’s reaction would have been shared by all PMs. The last non-Tory potential PM who fought a general election certainly wouldn’t have done that.

i do dislike Johnson’s Churchill apeing. That’s a fair criticism of style at least. But I think you’re just being sour about this. It’s one thing Johnson got right. You should be big enough to admit it.

ZenNudist · 30/06/2023 22:04

Theres an awful lot of scaremongering on this thread.

The tories have nothing left in their arsenal except claiming that the other lot would be just as bad. Which isn't true. You have to ask how could it actually get worse?!

We can look forward to further manipulation by tory HQ on mumsnet as the election approaches.

Terryer · 30/06/2023 22:06

I'd imagine the tories will raise the inheritance tax threshold and that'll be labour out again.

I don’t buy the everyone is a Tory HQ that Labour supporters go on about in nearly every post like this (if there are some there are likely Labour ones too)

Some people just don’t think Labour have coherent policies, or worse

I mean look at Labour in Wales they’re hardly ringing it in

And it was more than Johnson that got it right as you put it. Bloke is hardly even in charge of his own hangover. If you want to think he alone was in charge of the U.K. response then ahh bless is all I’ll say. He milked it.

God, I remember the last general election, mumsnet was horrific with anyone who didn't trust Jeremy corbyn branded a 'paid shill'

That makes no sense. If he does something bad (plenty, sure) then he’s responsible. If he does someone good he didn’t really do it at all. That’s just childish.

Again, no I don’t think any PM would have taken the same decisions and so quickly. Various European leaders didn’t.

Ha really? I don’t think I did politics on mn back then. Corbyn put me off Labour though

Lonelycrab · 30/06/2023 22:21

Johnson is arguably the most damaging Pm we have seen in modern times.

Look at the state of where we are now because of his leadership.

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2023 22:21

Well I look forward to the Conservatives suggesting they represent strength & stability 😉

Not Thatcher then? Lordy, how times change.

40 years ago. Do keep up. Thought this thread was about another incoming govt, but whatever gaslighterery floats your boat.

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2023 22:29

I'm going to guess Thatcher didn't need private loans to keep her afloat. Or dredge donors for wallpaper. Or get pissed at ex KGB members house parties. Or overwrite security service recommendations. Or suggest her dad get a peerage. Or her brother. Etc.

And I’d guess you’re right. Certainly did much more for the country than Johnson.

Rehabilitation and proper recognition, however late, is a wonderful thing.

She did insist on a hereditary peerage for herself so her son could inherit it. But you are right, her personal probity was beyond reproach.

YANBU. When it comes to the rights of women they will be significantly worse.

I don't like to tell you this, but Rishi Sunak has been PM since late September.

I don't mind telling you this but Liz Truss was PM in September. Sunak didn't become PM until late October.

I get it though, there's just been so many Tory PMs lately that some people find it hard to keep up.

Indeed, a whole extra one than the Labour terms of 1974 and 2005.
