Titanic 1997. Aibu to not realise how young Ruth was and that I don’t think Cal was that bad?

So it’s been a few years since I watched Titanic and always assumed that Ruth was in her 60s but she’s actually late 30s/early 40s. So she could have also got re-married (less likely but still a possibility.)

I know I’ll get flamed for this but I don’t think Cal was an outright villain. He did attempt to connect with Rose and love her but for his fiancé to be socialising with people in third class (when social standing was huge) and to blatantly cheat on him very openly then you can see why he’d be pissed off.

Also I’m judging him by Edwardian standards and not modern day. Obviously he did acts that made him a “bad” person as well.

Wtaf?

IamstilltheWalrus · 23/06/2023 11:19

What now?!

You do realise it was a movie, with completely made up stories around an historical event? 😂

Even reality tv shows are 100% scripted, it's not REAL 😂
Sadly so are most of the news, which is less funny.

Was it? I thought it was a reality tv show.

I think you’re right that Cal had every reason to be pissed off. Rose’s behaviour was absolutely outrageous for the time, and he was being humiliated.

But he lost the moral high ground when he got violent with her.

IamstilltheWalrus · 23/06/2023 11:28

his fiancé to be socialising with people in third class

that would never had happened in real life for start 😂

CleverLilViper · 23/06/2023 11:30

He was perfectly reasonable except for the temper tantrums, abuse and attempted murder but if you can overlook those things, Cal was an absolute peach.

Oops before anyone jumps on me I know I used the wrong “fiancé” and it should have had two e’s.

Should go without saying really as it’s still extremely easy to understand exactly what I meant but some people on MN are extremely pedantic and practically wet themselves pointing out grammatical errors.

Goodness, she doesn’t look in her sixties to me. And as rose is 17 it would be highly unlikely. Her age is not specified but her birth decade puts her at mid to late forties, which ties with Ruth’s age and her general appearance.

oh to look like that in my 60s.😂

I agree with you that Cal was right to be annoyed with Rose as mixing with 3rd class would have been quite shocking. Rose did also flirt and sleep with another man. I guess her behaviour was due to being trapped and resentful at having to marry a man she did not love/like and trying to snatch happiness where she could.

Cal was obviously quite controlling and a bit of an ass but I could definately see his point of view of his girl running about with another guy. He was rich so perceived to be a 'catch' so would not have expected to find his girl not behaving properly. (I wouldn't have wanted to marry him tho so sympathy to Rose)

I didn't really think about the mother Ruth to be honest but you are right - if Rose was only 18-20 ish and they had their kids quite young in those days then I assume Ruth would have been about 40-45. She looked older than that though didn't she? I think her chances of getting remarried would have been slim (not young or attractive and no money).

I always thought it was the mothers fault valuing her lifestyle over her daughters freedom and happiness. She wasn't prepared to work as a seamstress and have their things sold at auction so guilted Rose into marrying a man she didn't love or like. Cal was a bit of a pawn in it. I think he loved Rose but knew she didn't feel the same.

Poochypaws · 23/06/2023 11:43

Interesting to see the photo of Ruth posted there. Yes she probably is in her forties. I think the severe hairstyle makes you think she is older. Give her a modern bob and some relaxed clothes and she probably would look around mid forties.

Bambooflowers · 23/06/2023 11:51

Yes and the actress who played her was 45 at the time.

She does look great for her age.

I saw some off screen photos of the cast and there is one of her smiling and looking really nice, with a little female member of the cast and a hoop.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/06/2023 12:00

I think Rose was cruel to not tell her mum that she was actually alive. Though how they never spotted her in films and other stuff she did later I don't know. Her relationship with Jack would never have lasted.

What a weird response. What made you think the OP didn't know it wasn't real?

TeaStory · 23/06/2023 12:04

@Poochypaws She wasn't prepared to work as a seamstress

Who would?!

FortheBeautyoftheEarth · 23/06/2023 12:17

All the characters are pretty cartoon like and one-dimensional if you ask me. 'The rich chauvinist villain', the 'saintly Peter Pan boy'. And also it's very very anti British. All the people with British accents come across as dicks. I still enjoy it though. It's weird taking a real event and then overlaying such an ott, unrealistic love story but hey, it's of it's time and I loved in when I was 11. I don't think YABU

SweetBirdsong · 23/06/2023 12:20

Rose's mother (Ruth) was no way in her 30s. She was mid to late 40s in the film. (and mid 40s in real life.)

Cal was actually in his 30s...

But I agree Cal was not a bad man, just a product of his time. Loved Rose, but also considered her a possession. Rose was a teenager and did not want to be palmed off onto an older man as his wife, but Ruth was forcing her - to save them financially, because GASP, she would NEVER want to work as a 'seamstress.'

Ruth was the villain IMO. Stuck-up snobby cow, with an attitude problem who loathed the 'lower classes.' Looked at Jack like he was a piece of shit.

If they'd have made it (Jack and Rose,) I do wonder if it would have worked out though, as Jack had nothing (except his exceptional talent for art.) Although she did make it alone, and seemed to have a decent life at the end...

Their love was so pure. 😍

I need to get out more.... Confused Grin

Yes that’s fair. Cal was quite hot. I’m also going through Mr Andrews on the table.

YABU to call her Ruth 🤣

You know what 'seamstress' is a euphemism for, right? 😉
