I'm a victim of this and I think he was a monumental twat.
He also downplayed his victim's pain by saying that they were seeking stardom. That's a new level of cunt bag.

LoonyLois · 23/05/2023 15:35

I hadn’t realised he’d been released from prison. I just can’t feel the same way about him as I do Saville. He always seemed to be a nice guy what with Animal Hospital and stuff. How wrong am I!!

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 23/05/2023 15:36

He wrote a poem, based on ‘Two Little Boys’ in prison, slating and ridiculing his victims. I can’t even begin to imagine what that did to them. Truly nasty piece of work.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 23/05/2023 15:38

The only thing I'm going to say is that the press should leave the family alone. They've asked for that, yet still the Daily Mail etc are asking them for comment.

His daughter clearly doesn't want to say anything to the media and his wife has Alzheimer's. Just leave them alone.

TeaMistress · 23/05/2023 15:39

He was an evil pervert who did abhorrent disgusting things to children. Foul loathsome old man. Good riddance. I feel sorry for the undertaker and the people obliged to conduct a funeral for him.

GoodChat · 23/05/2023 13:32

It's about bloody time. Shame he went surrounded by friends and family rather than rotting in a jail cell like he belonged.

Thats exactly what I thought. If that had been a relative or friend of mine I'd have shunned them.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 23/05/2023 15:40

If I worked at the crematorium I would have handled his corpse with such indignity. He would have been shoved in the cremator on a shovel.

I agree with that.

Thepeopleversuswork · 23/05/2023 15:47

I’m still really shocked about what he did. I absolutely adored him as a child and it feels like a massive betrayal of the public’s love and trust.

What's shocking about this though is exactly that he was able to use the "public's love and trust". So many of these paedophiles were drawn to entertainment and broadcasting specifically because a) it brought access to children and b) because it gave them a huge platform and allowed them to fly under the radar.

He is despicable obviously. But the real shame in my view lives with the broadcasters and other institutions who tolerated this sort of thing from Rolf, Jimmy Saville, Schofield and others for decades knowing (or at least suspecting) that this was going on but ignoring it because of the good will of the public and the fact that these people brought in audiences and donations.

The real story here isn't that there are paedophiles, it's the institutional failure and it's also a cautionary tale to the public about its tendency to embrace showbiz figures in such a bovine and unquestioning way.

Yeah, I'm sure you did. Or was it just that he was creepy and you didn't like him? Or perhaps you did just perceive it in a superior way, the way that other people didn't quite manage to do, and have him bang to rights?

If only those other kids hadn't been so dense, eh?

If only that accurate laser perception didn't only happen in hindsight. This board is littered with it.

What makes me doubly angry about Rolf Harris is that he assaulted women in plain sight and it was ignored. I met a woman who had a junior position at a firm who made money with him, and all the younger women were forced to tolerate his 'fun', like grabbing and squeezing them. I know several men who worked with him and said they saw nothing wrong, while one of them says, weeeell, he was a bit handsy with the secretary - but said and did nothing. These men can't operate without people turning a blind eye.

MissFancyDay · 23/05/2023 15:51

He shouldn't be compared to Savile, it minimises Savile's truly horrendous crimes.

There was a recent photo on the DM showing a private ambulance outside his house. Private ambulances are used to move the deceased to a funeral parlour.

I saw that too.

I think this thread got posted today because it only caught up with the mainstream media today. I saw a gaming video on YouTube about 2 weeks ago and the journalist/broadcaster guy (correctly!) said that Rolf had died.

Harris was an amazingly talented man, who was widely & genuinely admired & loved by the public. He was even invited to paint a portrait of the Queen. His exposure shocked many people who never imagined that of him. It’s such a shame that he threw everything away.
I hope his death brings some degree of closure to his victims.

I think that he was a sexual predator who was also talented and admired. All those things were part of who he was as a person. I hope that his exposure opened some minds about what a sexual predator looks like. They can be liked, respected, admired, popular etc etc. Believe the victim.

The most 'successful' sexual predators are absolutely charming. That is their 'in', their likeability and expertise in making people feel good about themselves. That's their 'neurotoxin', too late to run then.

Mochudubh · 23/05/2023 14:15

I agree with you. Even as a kid I thought Savile was creepy, it seemed to be more adults that were taken in by him because of all his charity work.

Rolf Harris always seemed kind of cuddly and I was genuiinely shocked when the revelations came out. Bleurgh!

Harris with all the Animal Hospital stuff seemed trustworthy and “ Nice.

Saville was always a serious creep- just shows you cannot really be sure about ANYONE.
Too many males take advantage of their position of fame and power.

Horrible.

The best piece of advice my mum has ever given me is "Never trust anyone."

It's true, and I don't. Apart from my DH and family, and maybe one or two close friends I have known for years.

I'd thought Stuart Hall had died too. He's also 93. Depressing how some horrible people get to live so long. At least they've had a long time to live with the consequences.

He was the one who shocked me the most apart from" its a knockout "
He also presented Look Northwest, for years on BBC I grew up with him reading the local, news,he always seemed very pleasant

musixa · 23/05/2023 16:21

I hope the news of Harris's death will bring peace to his victims; I also hope his family will be left alone by the press, as they don't deserve to suffer for his crimes.
