Just that, really! One less bastard in the world

When I was about 20 or so, Rolf Harris played a set at Glastonbury festival and I, along with thousands of others, headed down to see him. The crowd massively outstripped the stage he’d been assigned to. But, of course, we’d all grown up watching him on the telly and he was the surprise hit of the festival.

I can still remember now, standing in the glorious Somerset sunshine, singing along to Two Little Boys, with an enormous crowd of similarly enamoured millennials. At the time, I felt such a genuine attachment to him. I was so glad that I “got to see him”.

I feel sick about it now. What a horrible old man.

porridgeisbae · 23/05/2023 16:34

He shouldn't be compared to Savile, it minimises Savile's truly horrendous crimes.

@MissFancyDay A child sex offender is a child sex offender is a child sex offender. Same difference.

They differ in the amount of victims maybe, that's all.

HappySonHappyMum · 23/05/2023 16:38

I can't help but feel so conflicted about his death. He was a vile pervert who did vile things to children and deserved to be punished for his crimes. BUT I absolutely adored his art programmes as a child and it was his enthusiasm for art (along with Tony Hart) that helped me discover my creativity and started me on the path to the creative job I do today and I'll always be grateful for that. I doubt I'd be doing what I do today without his encouragement - which my childlike self felt was always aimed through the TV at me. He was my hero as a child - so his criminality has always felt like a personal betrayal to me.

I think his family kept it quiet and had a quick funeral. I feel sorry for the undertakers and whoever had to do a funeral service.

I think they remembered what happened to JS grave. Burial at sea is always a good option imo.

The only difference is that Savile escaped justice. at least Harris was convicted in court, his victims were able to see some small amount of justice done.

TripleDaisySummer · 23/05/2023 16:46

Even as a kid I thought Savile was creepy, it seemed to be more adults that were taken in by him because of all his charity work.

I've said similar before and been told it's retrospective and hindsight kicking in - but I always though he was creepy and odd.

I did however think Rolf Harris was great - in the 80s as a child. My DMum made a few comments that he was odd more about how women around him seemed to interact with him few times on screen nothing she could put her finger on- she put it down to him being eccentric. So it did feel more shocking when he was finally uncovered.

Inheritance vultures.

That's unpleasant given that he has a very elderly wife who's been married to him since 1958, and who has dementia.

LittleGreenDuck · 23/05/2023 16:57

Saw this news whilst I was at work today and gleefully mentioned it to my colleague. She was most upset by his passing and refused to listen to my explanation that he sexually abused children. She justified it as "I'm sure it was just a pat on the bum".

I despair.

My dad did something similar about Stuart Hall. Apparently it was just young women throwing themselves at him. He shut up when I pointed out one of the "women" was a 9-year-old.

JustDanceAddict · 23/05/2023 17:01

Good. But agree with others who say he was really talented. I loved his art as a child and had one of his books where he drew his versions of classic paintings like Hockney.

CabbagePatchDole · 23/05/2023 17:07

Hohohogreenjennie · 23/05/2023 13:55

I’m still really shocked about what he did. I absolutely adored him as a child and it feels like a massive betrayal of the public’s love and trust.

I hope his victims have some sort of solace and comfort knowing he is no longer amongst us.

This.

I feel this weird relief now that he’s gone.

Atishoos · 23/05/2023 17:17

I often wonder if perverts like him should have their assets sequestered or seized and the proceeds of sale divided amongst the victims. Wealth and fame allowed them to do these despicable things and so it should be taken away from them. I do realise that there are many paedophiles who are not wealthy, but that is not the point.

However, I in the absence of any law like this they can serve their time and when released continue to enjoy their wealth and comforts. If a law was ever to be brought in, I am sure that the best lawyers will ensure that the perpetrator's wealth is transferred elsewhere, but there could be a clause similar to that for nursing home fees, a deprivation of assets clause.

Look, I have no answers, but it really sticks in my craw that the wealthy amongst them remain that way, and they never change their paedophile ways anyhow.

MouseMinge · 23/05/2023 17:19

Rolf broke me more than just about any of them. Saville was obviously a huge fucking weirdo so when it came out it was hardly a huge surprise. Rolf always came across as absolutely lovely, someone you'd want to have as a dad or an uncle. He was a big part of my childhood and it was just horrible to find out that all along he'd been a disgusting piece of shit. I hope this is at least something of a good day for his victims. In the end, they're the only ones that matter and his death is, I hope, a good thing for them.

MissFancyDay · 23/05/2023 17:22

viques · 23/05/2023 16:46

No thats's not the only difference. There are many thousands of sex offenders and pedophiles of varying degrees of depravity. Rolf Harris is different in that he was famous, trusted and used his fame to have more access to victims. There are people just as evil who are not well known.

Jimmy Savile was one of the worst and most depraved criminals in British history. His crimes were monstrous and unrivalled.

That said, I am sure there will be no tears shed for Rolf Harris. Hopefully his victims have some peace.

GG is back in prison I read the other month.
All those presenters and singers of my youth mostly nonces :(

Exactly. I keep thinking who is it going to be next…

Missingmyusername · 23/05/2023 17:24

“Tbf, it may be because it seems as if I'm celebrating someone's death”

A paedo so 🥂cheers. He never showed remorse.

JustDanceAddict · 23/05/2023 17:27

Btw I had some interaction with 2 convicted paedos in the last few years. I got no ‘vibes’ from either of them that they were anything but bona fide individuals. Very worrying, one was my DC’s teacher.

porridgeisbae · 23/05/2023 17:28

Who knows, more victims might come out publically with what they experienced now. The details of what Saville got up to weren't publically known until after his death.

Rosscameasdoody · 23/05/2023 17:32

Hopefully, round about now, he’ll be up to his chin in a sea of shit and the devil will be revving up the speedboat !!

Jux · 23/05/2023 17:33

Tbf, he didn't exactly "throw away" his talent, he used it to its greatest extent.

Always felt really let down by Rolf, loved his shows as a kid and he "seemed' a genuine nice chap - when it all came out I did feel betrayed, even though, thank god, I never met him.

Saville and to a lesser extent Hall were clearly eccentric at the least and i never liked either - I'm still shocked at the extent Saville penetrated the NHS, even Broadmoor Hospital, having his own keys, unbelievable.

Exactly how I felt and was devoe'd when it all came out. I loved him in Animal Hospital. I remember an episode when this bloke brought his old dog in to be put to sleep. It was so sad cos is the owner was crying, as was Rolf and I was too at home. He seemed to have so much compassion towards the animals and their owners that it was a total shock. Saville, Clifford and the likes didn't come as huge surprise but Rolf did and I'm still sad that he managed to pull the wool over everyone's eyes.

TakeMe2Insanity · 23/05/2023 17:44

I was disgusted that the BBC seemingly created a full on obituary with his film clips remembering him. I preferred sky news’ approach that a convicted offender had died.

I adored Rolf Harris as a child.

BodleyAnne · 23/05/2023 17:48

I love "rest in piss".

I couldn't bear his programmes when I was a child (all that huffing and bearding and didgeridooing was too much for me), and like many PP, thought he was long since dead. So it's good to have it confirmed.

Jux · 23/05/2023 17:58

His wife may have alzheimer's but she's still Company Sec of a company worth about 4mill. She can probably spare some.
