Recreational drugs after 40

Inthebathagain · 26/04/2023 07:32

In the two years, I've become aware of several friends, family and acquaintances who take lines/pills/tabs regularly. Some once a month, some twice a year. And everything in-between.

All walks of life...WFH, SAH, office worker, mechanic, police, care worker, teacher, headteacher. My favourite is the high rolling city worker who gets his gear delivered to his office on an electric scooter under his deliveroo takeout sandwiches.

All these people are aged 40-55.

I had no idea so many people around me of my age were using until one person told me they were, and then it snowballed. I now feel like I'm the rarity not using!

Is this reflective of the people around you too?

The only drug users I know over 40 just smoke weed. I'm aware it's happening a lot though, outside my circle. Don't know how they're not scared of getting a coke heart attack.

hugefanofcheese · 26/04/2023 07:35

I know a few for whom the drug fuelled partying has just never stopped. Coke as you get older is particularly dangerous as a cause for heart problems. Not a wise idea at all.

FotheringtonThomasMinor · 26/04/2023 07:36

I have one group of friends where dinner party coke is the norm. It makes me cringe, to be honest (even without thinking about the morality of it)- nothing duller than a coke head.

IME people who tried drugs much younger tend to have got it out of their systems, realised that although you feel fascinating on coke you’re actually even more boring than normal, and packed it in.

Thepeopleversuswork · 26/04/2023 07:37

I mean I don’t think you’re a rarity. I used to do Class A’s but have not touched them post 40 mainly because the way you feel afterwards isn’t worth the brief high. Most people I know don’t use at all.

Bur you’re talking about the rave generation (second summer of love) so it’s not entirely surprising that some people should have kept it up I guess.

Cherryblossoms85 · 26/04/2023 07:40

Maybe they should think about the harms the drug supply chain causes to millions. And not just coke. I've never taken it, and have no interest, but I did seem in the minority when the topic came up in the pub. I'm 45.

FettleOfKish · 26/04/2023 07:40

I know two or three that smoke a bit of weed. I don't know that anyone does more than that but I do know lots of high-rolling finance people so it wouldn't really surprise me.

I think it's a bit tragic that at this great age they've not learned how to have an enjoyable time without drugs (I lost interest in them in my early 20s) but each to their own I suppose.

This.

I don’t want to support organised crime and trafficking.

My friends wouldn’t touch them.

Florenz · 26/04/2023 07:50

The government need to really crack down on drugs, specifically targeting the middle-class cocaine fiend. Lock them in jail.

StupidFaces · 26/04/2023 07:50

I know a group of people who take Cocaine and LSD type stuff once a year at a festival. I think it’s really sad and cringy to be honest. They’re in their 40s/50s.

IHateLegDay · 26/04/2023 07:51

Be careful when sharing about people you know as Daily Mail will be all over a thread like this.

Fuck the Daily Mail.

Or you could not do drugs OR be hungover?

It doesn't have to be one or the other 🙄

HRTQueen · 26/04/2023 08:00

I know suite a few that smoke weed and a few that still use coke

those using coke look a bit sad they think others don’t know but we know the signs always taking over conversations, trying too hard to be cool, nowhere near as funny as they think they

sweaty balding Stephen at the pub with his equally idiot friends nipping to the loo often not just because of prostrate issues is just tragic

BatsHaveButtcheeks · 26/04/2023 08:01

It's not reflective in my circle as such, as I won't tolerate drug use, of any kind, including weed.

I used to work in the city, where it was common.

Do you really think your kids will suddenly not need you when they turn 18? I’m not judging your decision but your logic seems way off.

No you’re right and to be fair my DH and I have gone 5 years and then 7 years without anything, so I wouldn’t even really say once per year but I think it’s wildly unfair for people who drink every weekend to judge a different way of doing things.

Nimbostratus100 · 26/04/2023 08:02

no my friends are adults

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 26/04/2023 08:04

I used to be quite the cainer.
But no, everyone I know is far too skint and busy these days. Which is as it should be.
A little bit of weed perhaps. A few cans once the kids are in bed. Thats the beginning and end of it for pretty much everyone I know.

No I don’t think that but it’s just something I’m not comfortable doing right now but I might feel differently when they are adults with their own lives. Like would you care if your 70 year old grandpa ate some mushrooms (statistically one of the safest drugs in the world)? I would not care.

milkysmum · 26/04/2023 08:05

Unfortunately I do think it's fairly common. I know a teacher, nurse, social worker etc. All who take cocaine recreationally.
It's one of the reasons I divorced my husband, he just wasn't able to leave this life behind him.

Jackienory · 26/04/2023 08:06

If I have friends who use drugs then I’m not aware of it. Apart from alcohol. I have friends who drink a bottle of wine a night and think nothing if it.

ConkerBonkers · 26/04/2023 08:06

@Londongal123 try it? Naaah, you're alright love. Think I'll pass on that

You are 100% kidding yourself btw that it's all totally okay and justifiable. It isn't.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 26/04/2023 08:07

"not just because of prostrate issues"

😄😄😄
