Recreational drugs after 40

Inthebathagain · 26/04/2023 07:32

In the two years, I've become aware of several friends, family and acquaintances who take lines/pills/tabs regularly. Some once a month, some twice a year. And everything in-between.

All walks of life...WFH, SAH, office worker, mechanic, police, care worker, teacher, headteacher. My favourite is the high rolling city worker who gets his gear delivered to his office on an electric scooter under his deliveroo takeout sandwiches.

All these people are aged 40-55.

I had no idea so many people around me of my age were using until one person told me they were, and then it snowballed. I now feel like I'm the rarity not using!

Is this reflective of the people around you too?

No you’re right and to be fair my DH and I have gone 5 years and then 7 years without anything, so I wouldn’t even really say once per year but I think it’s wildly unfair for people who drink every weekend to judge a different way of doing things.

Does alcohol consumption result in people trafficking, county lines, children peddling drugs as they're unlikely to be searched, young males (typically) stabbing each, gangs, etc?

That's what drugs do. It's so typically of people to not giving a shit, just as long as they snort that powder or pop those pills, all in the name of a good time. It's pathetic.

HRTQueen · 26/04/2023 08:09

It’s fair to judge those buying drugs as they are supporting a huge amount of suffering

Londongal123 · 26/04/2023 08:10

ConkerBonkers · 26/04/2023 08:06

@Londongal123 try it? Naaah, you're alright love. Think I'll pass on that

You are 100% kidding yourself btw that it's all totally okay and justifiable. It isn't.

I was being sarcastic and only kidding about trying it. Obviously I know it’s not for everyone but I hardly think once per year is hurting anyone. Also, it’s not like it’s heroin, cocaine, etc which yeah those are very dangerous and I wouldn’t touch them with a 10 foot pole.

Unbridezilla · 26/04/2023 08:10

Londongal123's attitude is so similar to my friends who live in London (all old uni friends with middle class backgrounds and good jobs). They genuinely think it's cool to do this and "it's just what you do". I love them, but it irritates me a bit that we can't just have a me and a few drinks without the drugs. I don't partake, but when you're pretty much sober, a drugged friend is even more boring than the super drunks.

My non-London friends aren't like this at all, yet also mostly middle class backgrounds and uni and good jobs.

I wonder whether it is a London thing? (Although I could also imagine places like Bristol being the same)

Bapbap · 26/04/2023 08:10

Drugs just reveal what type of arsehole you are (and I include alcohol in that and drink myself!)

Sarah2891 · 26/04/2023 08:11

No, thankfully this is not reflective of people I know.

I find it pretty sad to be honest.

Nimbostratus100 · 26/04/2023 08:11

so how do all these people justify colluding with child slavery?

Well there are different types of class A drugs and 100% would not take anything that supports any of that (cocaine, heroin, etc) There are ways to do it that don’t include sourcing from a middle man.

The thing is, we don’t go to pubs and I think that would be so rude. I think the OP is mostly talking about cocaine which IMO is very dangerous and quite cringe. I’m just giving a different perspective on what people might do behind closed doors.

What like MDMA? Which you mentioned in your first post? You didn’t grow that organically on your window box.

’i was being sarcastic’
no you really weren’t, your posts are hilarious…so much back-pedalling going on.

Greatly · 26/04/2023 08:16

I think sanctimonious drug users are almost the worst. Picking liberty caps in a field when you are 45+ doesn't make you cool.

Mangogogogo · 26/04/2023 08:17

Police? How are they passing drug tests? They’re random and monthly, no warning!

Yerroblemom1923 · 26/04/2023 08:17

I wouldn't even know where to buy weed from!???

Mangogogogo · 26/04/2023 08:18

Fwiw I’m not completely against recreational drugs, but over 40 is tragic 😬 and I don’t know why

Bapbap · 26/04/2023 08:19

My dd could probably get me some. I'd possibly do edibles. Dd did when she was in California, seems very normal there.

Blizzard23 · 26/04/2023 08:21

Yes very middle and upper classes, they don’t seem to care about the dc, social services. Untouchable it seems. Poor form and considered sad and pathetic amongst the friends that don’t do that. No interest whatever in the trafficking, harm and death that is caused by supply as pp have confirmed. Morally bankrupt people.

Maverickess · 26/04/2023 08:22

Thing is, those doing it think it's 'cool' and 'edgy' and because it's a middle class thing it's fine.

The weed head with no teeth left or job gets judged 6 ways from Sunday for that, but the city coke head who probably spends more and thus contributes more towards an immoral and illegal trade, insists it's fine.
It's not fine.
It's the same with alcohol though, bottle of wine every night in a semi detached in a 'naice' area? No issue.
Bottle of value cider in a social housing flat on a 'sink' estate? You're a scourge on society.

I work at a wedding venue and it can be an issue, not least because they get mortally offended at being asked to stop by the staff because they're so sure they're a cut above everyone else. You're no different in reality to the toothless weed head, you just look better.

Boughtitdownthemarket · 26/04/2023 07:34

The only drug users I know over 40 just smoke weed. I'm aware it's happening a lot though, outside my circle. Don't know how they're not scared of getting a coke heart attack.

That would be a good way to go though.

Yes OP, up to about mid 50s. One senior enough that I had to pull him aside at an event and say "I know you're coked up but try not to show it".

I reported this to my late dad who was horrified and told me to report him to the board, he was not happy when I said I wouldn't be surprised if the board share a dealer 😂

Or you could not do drugs OR be hungover?

Yeah but drugs are fun 😆

people are always so cats bum mouth about drugs. Of course there are ethical considerations but on a purely basic level drugs are fun and usually harmless. Personally I don't do class As but B and C are fine with me. Why should I stop doing a thing that's fun because I'm over 40? Weird attitude.

So how is obtaining the class A drug, ecstasy/MDMA, achieved ethically then?
It's never imported, or has the same criminal channelling as other drugs, because you cut out the middle man? Fuck sake.

The government ARE the “middle class cocaine fiend”

Yes, drugs or not, the oddest thing about this thread is that people seem to think of 40 as being some ancient dotage where one must hang up their party hats and collect their pipe and slippers. Which (happily) doesn’t reflect the attitudes of any of the people I know 40+. I can’t imagine thinking of myself as on the slow creep towards old age from bloody 40!

'Weed head with no teeth' whut? Weed doesn't make you lose teeth. Maybe you're thinking about methadone??

Stifledlife · 26/04/2023 08:26

What blows my mind is that people don't understand the long term effects of drugs like MDMA. They destroy your seratonin receptors. The upshot of this is that you literally can't be happy and contented without ever increasing stimuli, so just as you are reaching an age where the pressure of children and financial outgoings is reducing you are becoming more and more unhappy.

I discovered my exDH had been regularly using MDMA for years unbeknowst to me. It explained such a lot about why he had become such a completely different person. Grumpy, bitter, frustrated, unhappy, unable to feel the joy in simple things.
Why would you do this to yourself for a short term jolly?
