Sunday 23rd April and yet another fatal dog attack

“Man dies after being mauled by 'out of control' dog in Derby as armed police shoot animal dead and another man is arrested”.

Does anyone else think Iit seems like the police or whoever are getting more and more reluctant to share the breed of dogs in these tragic incidents?

I understand that any dog can cause injury but with these fatalities surely they should be sharing more information?

i bet it was a bully breed, or a Rottweiler, husky, Alsatian.

Definitely not a chihuahua or Jack Russell.

JOD74 · 23/04/2023 16:25

There needs to be harsher punishments of dog owners

It was a big black dog, so not a husky, or German shepherd. It would be unusual for a GS to attack to that level for no reason.

The owner of the dog is in his 50's, as is the man who has died. We can't assume the circumstances.

Okunevo · 23/04/2023 16:35

There are too many dogs, particularly large dogs owned by people who don't know how to train or handle them properly. A dog is not right for every family. There needs to be more restrictions on dog ownership.

Medium sized black dog always pulling on its lead?

So untrained. Not exercised enough

Are bulldog types ever black?

Rarely black if ever , if it was a bully it's not breed standard but then these people aren't interested in that .

Yes, a black one is walked past my door daily.

theworldsgonefeckingmad · 23/04/2023 16:47

Cane corso maybe?

SunshineGeorgie · 23/04/2023 16:48

Description fits our Labrador!

I didn’t click on the daily heil link, so didn’t see the update that it was black. Most like a bully breed then.

BlusteryLake · 23/04/2023 16:51

Well it isn't going to be a cockerpoo is it? Always the same old story.....

Or a leafy suburb in Harrogate

whynotwhatknot · 23/04/2023 17:08

it seems to be getting worse-im sorry but it should be harder to own a dog these days its like buying bloody teabags how easy it is

Very unlikely to be a husky. We have huskies. They are not at all aggressive.

Bananalanacake · 23/04/2023 17:37

I come from Harrogate and grew up on a leafy suburb. I was born in the late 70s and having a dog was rare and unusual, only one member of my family had one, they lived further away and we didn't see them much. But now owning a dog is seen as more normal.

Cheapcookies · 23/04/2023 17:40

It won't be a bully breed or Shepherd because it would have been mentioned in the article immediately if it was. They keep it hazy when it is a breed people generally do not stereotype.

A medium sized black dog could be a spaniel, a lab, a collie cross, a sharpei, a cockerpoo, a lurcher, a mixed breed...it really is very vague.

That or a Rottweiler

Huskies are not at all aggressive. If they are, its due to serious abuse or something to that effect. It is NOT a breed characteristic in the slightest.

Cheapcookies · 23/04/2023 17:43

Cane corsos and rottweilers are both large breed dogs

You can get black GSDs but yes it’s very unlikely

They don’t state the breed immediately as sometimes it isn’t entirely obvious even if it’s a wide jaw breed. My ex had a staff cross boxer, hard to tell the exact cross initially it just looked like a massive staff.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 23/04/2023 17:51

Nothing will be done, there is no will in this country to regulate dog ownership. No will to ban breeds, no will to register dogs, no will to make training mandatory, no will to enforce use of leads in public places.

We just wait for the next person to be killed.

And the next.

And the next.

SunshineGeorgie · 23/04/2023 17:52

There is the will

Most Dog owners would welcome it. I know I would do!

As a dog owner, I am also scared for my own dog. He's always on lead, unlike so many

Cheapcookies · 23/04/2023 17:55

Defra are doing various inquiries in to dog related stuff but it always takes a very long time.

Foreign rescues need to stop being imported. Defra are currently looking in to the impact of overseas rescuing.
Dog training and behaviour needs regulating (for professionals).
Dog licensing needs to come back with mandatory training.
Councils need more dog wardens in public spaces.
More private fields need to be available for hire for off lead use, as lead laws, where they exist, need enforcing. Local councils can open these.

Banning breeds doesn't work.

Depends who made the size observation.

IrregularChoiceFan · 23/04/2023 17:57

The rise must be down to the number of idiots getting dogs in lockdown. They were the ultimate lockdown accessory and now you have loads of irresponsible owners who have all had to go back to work, don't exercise these dogs as often as needed and are surprised when their dog attacks someone.
