To think that cows milk is so bad… yet tastes so good

I need to give up dairy for my health (and the dairy industry is pretty vile when you look at it). All fine, except I have milk on coffee. Good coffee is one of the crucial things in life. AIBU to think with all the technological advances humanity has made, someone would have come up with a milk replacement that tastes good in coffee without adding a load of sugar. I know there are worse problems in the world.

AIBU to think that all cow milk replacements can only be described as ‘sadness water’?

I can no longer stomach cows milk in coffee, it tastes disgusting, slightly sweet and leaves a film. I like unsweetened almond milk but only the fresh kind, not the uht kind.

Ace56 · 23/04/2023 08:40

Personally I can barely tell the difference between normal milk and lactose-free! Do you drink full fat milk? Maybe there’s a big difference in that case.

caffelattetogo · 23/04/2023 08:41

No, I think many plant milks taste better, particularly in coffee. Have you tried the 'barista' versions?

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 23/04/2023 08:42

so, I eat and drink some dairy, some meat but I try to do it mindfully…. but oat milk is delicious, appears to be the best option in terms of water consumption and carbon footprint, and is great in coffee, either in a Latte or just a splash in a cup of filter coffee

bellac11 · 23/04/2023 08:42

I dont have full fat in drinks like tea and coffee, its too strong but I do use full fat for making porridge.

Ive tried a number of milk substitutes over the years they taste awful to me.

I dont have a problem with milk or the milk industry to be honest.

Orcubed · 23/04/2023 08:43

I’m probably not much help as I think cows milk tastes disgusting so we have different tastebuds but I like oatly or alpro this is not milk in coffee. Other oat milks I’ve tried are not so good including the normal alpro.

illiterato · 23/04/2023 08:44

Oatly barista is pretty thick especially if you’re using a milk frother.

MeinKraft · 23/04/2023 08:46

I'm not sure oat or almond milk is actually better for your health than cows milk? Cows milk has lots of vitamins.

Makegoodchoices · 23/04/2023 08:46

Cashew milk is pretty nice in a hot choc - I drink coffee black so couldn’t tell you if it works there.

I can’t really get on with oat/almond/soy milks.

Bk1000 · 23/04/2023 08:47

I regularly try to give up dairy but I hate plant based milk, they all taste so chemically and unnatural. My dd has a dairy allergy until she was about 7 she has completely outgrown it now but she refuses to drink cow milk she says its disgusting and tastes of cows so maybe it just depends what you are used to!

snoopyscarpy · 23/04/2023 08:47

So, my partner has been vegetarian for 18 years. I have been vegetarian for 1.5 years now; I'd never go back.

But one thing I always said was, "milk alternatives are gross I could never ever stop having cows milk." I was adamant. My partner isn't vegan but he won't have dairy milk.

Anyway, for some reason I asked for an oat latte when I was out and it was actually really nice. So I got myself some Oatly Barista for at home and I haven't used dairy milk since!

I don't eat cereal but will use Oatly for porridge too.

Give it a go!

VincentVaguer · 23/04/2023 08:48

I really hate the oatly barista! It tastes of oil.

faffadoodledo · 23/04/2023 08:49

Have always disliked milk milk as we call it in our house. I'm not vegan (yet). So now drink black tea and have oat milk in coffee.
Much nicer!

greenlychee · 23/04/2023 08:49

so many good alternatives these days! oat milk, hazelnut muilk (yum!!)..... and in anticipation (as it always comes up) to anyone who thinks that vegan milks are as bad as milk for the environment you are sadly sorely mistaken. See attached graph.

Also; have a look into the dairy industry those who have said you don't care etc etc.

Also; the pus and hormone part is enough to put me off!

Natsku · 23/04/2023 08:51

All milks taste bad to me tbh, can't stand any milk or "milk" in my tea. I love other dairy products but just milk itself is unpleasant.

cupofdecaf · 23/04/2023 08:51

I looked at changing from cows milk. However most are really high in either sugar or starch (which is practically sugar).
Also when I looked at the environmental impact I couldn't find one I was happy with. Almond and soya seem especially bad for the environment.
I try to stick to British milk and milk products because of the higher welfare standards and less food miles.

NowItsSpring · 23/04/2023 08:52

I use oat milk quite happily in coffee and on breakfast cereal/porridge. Have not found a non dairy option that I can stomach in tea though so sticking with skimmed milk for now.

happyumwelt · 23/04/2023 08:52

We have unsweetened almond and oat milk - both are much nicer than cows milk - it takes a while for taste buds to adjust and then cows milk just tastes gross.

Cows milk is meant for baby cows. I always find it funny that a large minority of people are a bit grossed out about breastfeeding but happily guzzle cows milk! I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I find milk a bit odd.

That’s really misleading. The UK dairy industry water stats always include rainfall in their water usage. Rain makes grass grow and cows eat grass. UK dairy is nowhere near as damaging to the environment as having your Californian almonds processed and shipped in.

OP, some of the nut milks are ok tasting but a lot are UHPF so taste crap or are filled with crap with no natural nutrition in them. There’s nothing wrong with cow’s milk.

napody · 23/04/2023 08:54

I agree cows milk is the best in coffee, oat milk isn't bad.

But hazelnut milk in a hot chocolate to make praline hot chocolate is a beautiful thing.

IrregularChoiceFan · 23/04/2023 08:54

I don't drink milk but I used to. I randomly turned myself off it and haven't been able to drink it since.

I learnt how to enjoy my coffee black with no sugar and now it's the only way I like it.

I also make porridge with water and don't eat cereal, I am a heathen according to dp 😅

This is how I feel now!

We don't drink any other animals milk, apart from goats?

We surely wouldn't drink dogs milk 😂🤢 so why cows?! It's odd.

Mutabiliss · 23/04/2023 08:59

I completely agree, really don't like the dairy industry but all alternatives are revolting. And yes I have tried Oatly Barista! It just tastes chemically and weird. My partner is dairy intolerant and drinks Alpro so that's in the house, but it's just nasty. I wish I could train myself to like it.

I assume it's partly what you grow up with. And I do think cow milk is good for us, generally.

I agree re black coffee - it is an acquired taste, but is nice as long as it is good coffee. I tend to have a tiny smidge of almond milk in coffee (probably a tbsp at most), but would choose black coffee over cows milk, which just wrecks it.

I like feta cheese, but don't really do any other dairy. I have found that if you stop eating it for a while it tastes really unpleasant when you go back.
