To think that cows milk is so bad… yet tastes so good

I need to give up dairy for my health (and the dairy industry is pretty vile when you look at it). All fine, except I have milk on coffee. Good coffee is one of the crucial things in life. AIBU to think with all the technological advances humanity has made, someone would have come up with a milk replacement that tastes good in coffee without adding a load of sugar. I know there are worse problems in the world.

AIBU to think that all cow milk replacements can only be described as ‘sadness water’?

Train yourself to like black coffee .I cant stomach any milk in coffee now.It tastes so much nicer.

WestOfWestminster · 23/04/2023 09:56

I am so pleased there is now a wider range of affordable easily accessible milk alternatives for people who either need them due to allergies/intolerance or just want to do their bit for the planet.

I don't see people who choose to drink plant based milks as sanctimonious, often its not through choice anyway - its because they can't have dairy due to health needs. For those that choose to go plant based for environmental reasons, good for them! We all do what we can to help the environment right? Some of us drive electric cars, others recycle with a passion, or buy ethically sourced fashion. Hardly anyone does everything in their life with the environment in mind all the time, we all have our faults like enjoying flying for foreign holidays, or buying some cheap dresses from Shein, or even drinking cows milk. If you like drinking cows milk and don't want to change that then fine but its got to be a good thing that there are some excellent alternatives out there now.

Dashel · 23/04/2023 10:00

There are so many plant milks about now. I would keep trying different ones until you find one you like. We get ours from Lidl as that is DHs favourite (he isn’t vegan and I am so I compromised by having the one he likes) and he now prefers it to cow juice.

LadyEloise1 · 23/04/2023 10:00

I don't like the taste of cows milk.
I liked it when I was younger.
My dh drinks copious amounts of it.

WithyouFromDuskTilDawn · 23/04/2023 10:04

I drink oat milk. Dairy cows have a shit life and I don’t feel people should have the right to subject them to that life just because they want their milk.

JulieHoney · 23/04/2023 10:05

I’ve weaned myself onto black tea but I just can’t manage black coffee. All the alternatives (including Oatly Barista) are just wrong and ruin the coffee.

I decided drinking less coffee but the very best I could make it would be a workable solution - my one pint of skimmed milk a week was a compromise worth making.

BertieBotts · 23/04/2023 10:06

Oatly barista is actually lovely, and I don't usually like non dairy milk.

BertieBotts · 23/04/2023 10:06

It's got to be good coffee, though. Doesn't work with instant.

Personally I can barely tell the difference between normal milk and lactose-free! Do you drink full fat milk? Maybe there’s a big difference in that case.

Lactose free is still dairy milk… from cows you no. Not what the OP is talking about.

Newtrix · 23/04/2023 10:08

We gave up milk and love Minor Figures barista.

You're more patient than me. I totally ignored that post as I just dont have the energy to correct this bullshit anymore

And with the water thing that keeps gettin bandied around all the time.

So tiresome

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/04/2023 10:19

Where are all the actual milk drinkers? Because people must buy it for the huge amounts we see in the supermarkets.

I'm one family that consumes a lot of milk but I always find MN the twilight zone absent for things totally normal in "the real world".

I drink milk, we have 3 kinds in this house, lactose free for me, blue and green for the others. Love milk, I usually have it as a protein shake though.

Threads like this usually attract mainly vegans, people allergic to dairy, vegan haters and farmers. There’s obviously a lot of people that still drink cows milk but they’re maybe not drawn to the thread.

I’m vegan and I have noticed a lot of people drinking cows milk alternatives even if they still consume other animals products.

KimberleyClark · 23/04/2023 10:32

The problem with milk substitutes is that they’re highly processed (take a look at the list of ingredients) and they are much lower in actual nutrients than cow’s milk.

CremeEggThief · 23/04/2023 10:33

Oat milk is the best non-dairy milk for coffee.

Suzi888 · 23/04/2023 10:34

Try Alpro my cuppa. No one can tell the difference, I get it for the office. Nobody has a clue.

Wishawisha · 23/04/2023 10:34

I stopped drinking milk in tea (or anything else) a long time a go. It was weird at first but after a few months I couldn’t stomach it. The smell is so distinctive and now turns my stomach.
I think you just have to go cold turkey if you want to stop drinking it.

That’s not true.

Most have more vitamins than animal milk.
