To think that cows milk is so bad… yet tastes so good

I need to give up dairy for my health (and the dairy industry is pretty vile when you look at it). All fine, except I have milk on coffee. Good coffee is one of the crucial things in life. AIBU to think with all the technological advances humanity has made, someone would have come up with a milk replacement that tastes good in coffee without adding a load of sugar. I know there are worse problems in the world.

AIBU to think that all cow milk replacements can only be described as ‘sadness water’?

Be careful with oat milk, it's carb-heavy which causes glucose spikes and can make you feel a bit shit really. I've just given it up after several years of having it in my coffee and feel a lot better. I'm not a fan of any of the alternatives so black coffee it is.

Natsku · 23/04/2023 09:02

But hazelnut milk in a hot chocolate to make praline hot chocolate is a beautiful thing.

That does sound good

MeinKraft · 23/04/2023 08:46

I'm not sure oat or almond milk is actually better for your health than cows milk? Cows milk has lots of vitamins.

Ugh and dairy is full of IgF1 now linked to cancer and diabetes.

Whu · 23/04/2023 09:04

Cows milk is so weird. Why do we drink another mammals milk as adults? And why choose a random one? Who decided one day to try it? Imagine if someone said they drank their dogs milk…
I don’t get it at all and have never liked it since I realised what it was around 10! Now I understand the cruelty of the industry, and how the cows have to keep being impregnated, I especially dislike it.

We are so lucky with the different options now. I love the creaminess of oat milk and it is the lowest impact environmentally too so seems a win/ win to me.

SybilWrites · 23/04/2023 09:05

I gave up dairy because I can't tolerate it, and now the thought of it now makes me feel sick.

I drink coffee black now when I drink it. But don't mind coconut milk frothed up too - that on hot chocolate is delicious.

(I actually like Oatly too, but turns out I'm intolerant to oats too).

Georgi5 · 23/04/2023 09:06

I think your tastes buds change because I couldn’t stand soya milk in tea but gave up dairy after reading the research the last few years as partner has metastatic cancer and was told to lay off dairy products and now I can’t stand the taste of dairy in tea but soya is normal. I agree with others oatley is nice in coffee or soya single cream if you want a creamy coffee.

ActDottie · 23/04/2023 09:08

Oat milk on coffee is amazing! Also coconut milk if I want a more coconutty taste - I like it in iced coffees

There's a really long and interesting history of how and why we drink cows milk, starting with us not being able to drink it but evolving and developing so that we can. Have a Google. It's really fascinating.

Meadowflower2023 · 23/04/2023 09:11

What @VanillaSpiceCandle said...

That’s really misleading. The UK dairy industry water stats always include rainfall in their water usage. Rain makes grass grow and cows eat grass. UK dairy is nowhere near as damaging to the environment as having your Californian almonds processed and shipped in.

OP, some of the nut milks are ok tasting but a lot are UHPF so taste crap or are filled with crap with no natural nutrition in them. There’s nothing wrong with cow’s milk.

🙌🏼 🙌🏼 🙌🏼 🙌🏼

Xrays · 23/04/2023 09:17

Tescos cheapest brand unsweetened soya milk is the only alternative I like. Even the various alpro ones that are supposed to be unsweetened still have vanilla type flavours added which make them disgusting to me.

snoopyscarpy · 23/04/2023 08:59

This is how I feel now!

We don't drink any other animals milk, apart from goats?

We surely wouldn't drink dogs milk 😂🤢 so why cows?! It's odd.

Presumably because of quantities, ease of milking, domestication

Lots of countries have sheeps milk too, pecorino is the best cheese in the world for example

Yaks milk for those countries who have yaks predominantly, there is also buffalo milk.

Its an ancient thing, humans make the most of the world around them and predominately these are the milks we have chosen over thousands of years.

User4670 · 23/04/2023 09:26

I use unsweetened alpro soya milk which is made from sustainably sourced soya beans in porridge which is nice but I’m still struggling with the taste of it in coffee although I am getting used to it. Would never be able to have it in tea though.

Mulknmore · 23/04/2023 09:27

Agree with the sadness milk. I buy organic milk and yeo valley when I can as a compromise.

The studies of milk and the milk industry are biased by people's interests so it's difficult to make good conclusions. I have tried making my own oat milk from British oats as l don't think almond milk flown from water short California is a good alternative.

Many people can't digest milk as adults. In Britain something happened in the iron age leaving a particularly high proportion of adults who can digest milk.

SmileyClare · 23/04/2023 09:28

Cows milk is so weird. Why do we drink another mammal’s milk, imagine if someone said they drank their dog’s milk?

Thats a rather childish view isn’t it? I could say why do people eat beef burgers and not “dog burgers” It’s fairly obvious that this country regard dogs as pets isn’t it?

I’m not singling out the poster I quoted above, but I find the sanctimony from non milk drinkers hard to stomach.

As if they’re saving the planet by drinking almond milk and are choosing the “healthy” superior route. It’s pretty tedious to hear someone being evangelical over their nut milk.

Also reindeer milk

polkadotdalmation · 23/04/2023 09:30

I buy organic free range milk from the milkman. Nothing beats it. Oat milk etc is horrid and expensive.

BigGreen · 23/04/2023 09:31

Oatly organic froths well and doesn't have oil. But it us £

MeinKraft · 23/04/2023 09:35

'Ugh and dairy is full of IgF1 now linked to cancer and diabetes.'

Haven't heard about that, but every plant we eat is liberally doused in pesticides and fertiliser which I'm sure isn't wonderful for health either.

greenlychee · 23/04/2023 08:49

so many good alternatives these days! oat milk, hazelnut muilk (yum!!)..... and in anticipation (as it always comes up) to anyone who thinks that vegan milks are as bad as milk for the environment you are sadly sorely mistaken. See attached graph.

I don't think that graph shows what you think it shows!

SunshineGeorgie · 23/04/2023 09:36

Nah I'll stick to cows milk

Nothing on this thread can show a better alternative or give a good enough reason not to!

Easterfunbun · 23/04/2023 09:37

I don’t think drinking cows milk is odd. It’s been done since the beginning of time. Cows are sacred in India for the sole reason it is known the animal has kept many person alive via nutrients from milk.

Wishona · 23/04/2023 09:41

My middle DC was dairy free for a while so we tried a range of milks. I like Almond milk in coffee, oat for cooking anything savoury and used coconut when baking sweet things like rice pudding.

For the last 3 years we have had free range milk from the milkman. I don’t think many people are aware that a lot of cows live in barns not fields 😕

But I eat cheese etc from non free range cows

bellac11 · 23/04/2023 09:45

Natsku · 23/04/2023 09:29

Yes, I just remembered another one, camel which apparently is very rich

User1794537 · 23/04/2023 09:52

I only like unhomogenised milk so only buy Duchy organic milk or similar, I don't like the normal milk which most supermarkets have nowadays, Duchy organic is a much creamier colour as well

Cows live indoors over winter and out to pasture over the warmer months.
