... to expect to be able to find Easter stuff in the shops today?

kitnkaboodle · 06/04/2023 13:48

Just been on a fruitless search for some very basic Easter things today - small choc eggs, for example. No Easter goods at all to be found in three different supermarkets. Morrisons had a pile of large eggs in the middle of the fruit and veg section that looked like they were on their way outside and which you had to remove the shrink wrap from.
Thank goodness for Aldi's- still got an Easter display.
IANBU, am I?? There are three days until Easter Day. I realise that no shop wants a load of eggs left over on Monday ... but my customer satisfaction level is now below zero! It's the same at Christmas... go to the shops on, say, December 22nd and they'll already be binning the Christmas stuff. Are we all meant to get everything a month in advance??

Nobody has mentioned M&S. They have loads in my local one.

I did a few hours ago.

I never understand this type of thread where people are sooooo annoyed by not finding Easter stuff in the shops the day before Good Friday!!!!!!! The stuff's been for sale for five or six weeks or more. And yes, of course you should think about buying a month in advance (or at least two weeks in advance.) Coming on here starting a thread, whinging about not being able to find Easter stuff just a few hours before the shops shut for Good Friday is just laughable and pathetic, to be honest with you.

It's like people complaining on 30th October that they can't get a pumpkin or ANY Halloween streamers or decorations, OR that they can't get Valentine's stuff on 13th February! Or Mothers day cards and gifts the day before Mothers Day. Why the hell do you leave it so late? They put stuff out in the shops a couple of months or more before the event to enable people to buy in good time. I bought all my Easter eggs and Easter cards and Easter decor some 6 weeks ago.. Why the hell wouldn't you? Confused

I can't believe half the people on the poll agree with you. They must be lastminute.com people as well. Fine, leave it til last minute, but don't complain when you can't get anything. The shops don't owe you anything. They have had the decency and courtesy to put the stuff out for the past 2 months. Not their problem you CBA to try to buy it til the day before Good Friday.

You have only yourself to blame. As a pp said. You snooze, you lose.

VickyEadieofThigh · 06/04/2023 19:49

Did a shop at our nearest Aldi this morning. They had ZERO traditonal hot cross buns left, only the twatted-about with kinds. I thought, 'go on, give the apple and sultana version a go, how bad can they be?'

The answer is VERY bad. Over-sweet, none of the traditional taste of a hot cross bun at all and the apple aspect tastes synthetic.

OhmygodDont · 06/04/2023 19:51

Loads in Sainsbury’s today and I saw aldi had loads the other day still.

Noodles1234 · 06/04/2023 19:54

We found 1kg bags of Cadbury Mini Eggs in Waitrose back in late Feb, they sold out and haven’t had them since - that or people keep buying them!

I had the same issue 2 years ago so I now buy early, you’re right it would be nice to do later but I think a lot of people now buy early.

good luck.

Mueslikid · 06/04/2023 19:54

YANBU at all.

Easter eggs take up a lot of space. I don’t want them knocking around getting in my way for months in my small kitchen! But I’ve been caught out before, so try to get them a week or so in advance now.

I rushed off to the shops on Monday (Aldi) and managed to get everything I needed. I like that Aldi don’t put them out ridiculously early - it makes me feel they are fresher (I’m aware this may be an illusion), and also they still look a bit novel. I’m sick of the sight of the Cadbury’s ones that I’ve been seeing everywhere since before New Year!

I don't want to buy Easter stuff in January though. Particularly chocolate which I'd be tempted to eat. I know leaving it till today is pushing it a bit but I don't think it's unreasonable to want to shop close to the season instead of constantly moving on to the next thing. I was in Home Bargains today and they had father's day stuff out.

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

Who said you had to buy your Easter stuff in January? Confused I said at least a fortnight before - or a month... It's frigging APRIL now. How do you work out 'a fortnight to a month ago' as January?! No reason on earth why you couldn't buy your EASTER stuff in mid March even. Still only 3 weeks before, and you would guarantee getting it. No good waiting til Good Friday Eve and then carping and moaning, with a sad face, because there's 'nothing left...' Sad

bizzywiththefizzy · 06/04/2023 23:36

To be honest it's not retailers fault you don't buy early because you will eat it if you have it in house and then the children go without , eek .

BlueJellycat · 06/04/2023 23:51

I think it was like this last year so I got my Easter eggs last month. That was interesting hiding them from the kids for so long!

5foot5 · 07/04/2023 00:41

I just don't recognise this problem at all.

Did our big Easter shop at Sainsburys on Wednesday. Loads of legs of lamb, hot cross buns, Easter eggs etc.

Had to nip in for some odd bits Thursday. Still lots of choices of eggs from bargain to luxury.

Maybe the shops you visit are keeping stuff back until the last minute. Or maybe try somewhere else.

snitzelvoncrumb · 07/04/2023 00:45

OhMyCherriePie · 06/04/2023 14:01

Makes me laugh as my mum use to say get them all after Easter as they will be all half price (that’s what she use to do) but nowadays they are sold out way before Easter

My dad would buy us the cheap broken Easter eggs after Easter. We would get a plastic bag of broken chocolate 😂

Ohdofuckofdear · 07/04/2023 00:52

Hope this helps someone,Lidl had tons of Easter eggs in today and I'd left it this late because I'd completely lost track( that's a bloody understatement)of the days because I thought Easter was next week😬.

Tons of they're Easter Eggs were on buy 1 get 1 free (we managed to get nearly £11 off with that offer)and they had Big eggs, small eggs, bags of mini eggs, little cellophane bags with chocolate bunnies and eggs in,Easter mallow lollies and they had Reeces Pieces selection bags with little chocolate bars and peanut cups in.

SlipperyLizard · 06/04/2023 14:29

My local asda was clearing the Easter stock away this morning - still got a few eggs, but not much choice. Annoying as I’d seen a recipe for an Easter cheesecake I wanted to make & now can’t get mini eggs for the top!

I think I know the recipe, I asked my husband to pick up some mini eggs at the store for a cheesecake as well. He was able to find some though.

ComputerWifeKaren · 07/04/2023 02:10

A week before Halloween the year before last and there were no pumpkins to be found. Massively upset child, relieved Mum having to spend hours carving the buggers. Christmas decs everywhere. Have you seen the fucking price of Easter eggs etc this year?! I didn't bother getting myself one.

Roselilly36 · 07/04/2023 02:51

We had just moved house a couple of weeks before Easter, a couple of years back, went out to buy eggs, none left in all the big stores, other than in bashed up boxes, broken etc. managed to find a few in the small co-op, been much more organised ever since. Our DS’ are adults but they still want an Easter Egg.

GoodChat · 07/04/2023 05:54

I was surprised how little Home Bargains had left yesterday but The Range and our Morrisons were still well stocked.

I wasn't buying - just happened to see them.

I bought a couple of eggs a week for the past few weeks so that it didn't feel like a big outlay all at once.

Crumpetdisappointment · 07/04/2023 05:58

it has been the same for me in the past
i always suggest less used shops, Iceland, or Waitrose

Aprilx · 07/04/2023 07:21

We got discounted Easter eggs yesterday in Waitrose, surprised to see them discounted before Easter Sunday!

LubaLuca · 07/04/2023 07:28

I think shops are now excellent at holding no surplus stock, so by Easter weekend they'll have very little left. I remember a couple of years ago, a few days before Easter I was trying to get Mini Eggs for on the crispy nest cakes, but there was none to be had.

All the things people buy for Easter can be stored for weeks at home, so it's no wonder they buy when they see the eggs they particularly want.

dottiedodah · 07/04/2023 07:38

Seems mixed round here.my dd(grown up,but still wanted a certain choc orange egg) sb all out .got it in the petrol station of all places! Haven't been able to get out as much as usual, due to hurting my knee.luckily had bought most by beginning of march.a few years ago loads left over.now shops don't want this and I think order less.need to be prepared op in future!

Luckyduc · 07/04/2023 07:52

They've been out since 1st January and you leave it until April to buy?
I've spent 25 years working for shops and most people buy easter stuff in February, most people do Christmas shopping in October and November.....so yes, if you want the choice of everything you need to be buying minimum a month before an

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 07/04/2023 09:03

Its ridiculous. We don't want them in stores before new years eve yet shops insist.
I normally wait until they are on offer (normally end of feb) and buy them then, but it's annoying trying to shove them all out the way.
The biggest problem is because one person starts buying them early so others do too.
Same with anything in retail though. Like trying to buy school stuff anytime between October & March there's nothing.
I'm more pissed off you only get about 6 mini eggs in a pack now.

Dottie321b · 07/04/2023 09:54

The reason they are sold out is because most people do try to be organised and buy them a little before the event. So if you can't be arsed to do this you should expect to be disappointed!

I've worked in supermarkets for around 20 years now and it really annoys me when disorganised entitled people think we should have full stock of everything just for them. I'm guessing you are one of THOSE people who come into the shop 10 minutes before closing time and then complains that many of the shelves are empty because all the other customers who came shopping in the preceding 13 hours bought it all
