To ask if your son stopped growing at 13/14?

Mine is 14 in April and seems to have stopped growing. He is 5 ft 6 and would like to be taller. He seems to have had his major growth spurt and voice has broken a couple of years ago so I expect he won’t have another big growth spurt but he’s hoping to get a bit taller but hasn’t grown for 6 months. Is it likely that all his growing is done by 13? Seems early but who knows. Has anyone else’s son stopped growing by this age?

Don't boys tend to grow until 16?

Hoppinggreen · 27/03/2023 13:38

I hope so, he’s over 6ft with size 11 feet!
A lot of his peers are still growing though

Hellocatshome · 27/03/2023 13:39

Boys can continue growing into their early 20s. Make sure he has a balanced diet and what will be will be.

Sunshineismyfriend · 27/03/2023 13:41

I’m not sure. He seems to tower over his friends but a lot of them hadn’t had a growth spurt or voices broken so I guess they will catch up. He’s hoping he will continue to grow even if his major growth spurt is done but hasn’t grown at all for 6 months or so. Maybe we are just used to him growing a centimetre or so a month so it feels unusual.

DS was taller than a great many of his friends at 14. By 18 most of them had caught up & some are taller than he is. I would not worry for a while

LuvSmallDogs · 27/03/2023 13:44

My 5'7 dad has always said he stopped growing at age 13-14. No signs of health issues, though it was the 50s-60s and 5'7 was seen as "taller" then so no chasing up was done.

BeachBlondey · 27/03/2023 13:44

Nooo - he has lots of growing left to do!!

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/03/2023 13:45

Yanbu to ask.

ArmchairAnarchist2 · 27/03/2023 13:47

Both DS were slim and small at that age. One is 27, one 18 now and both are 6 foot and still slim. They both had growth spurts around the time they left school.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/03/2023 13:49

DS1 stopped growing at about 14. He had a massive growth spurt in Y8, grew 6 inches in 6 months, then it slowed down and finally stopped about a year later. He is 5'11"

DS2 didn't grow much in his early teens, didn't go through puberty until later, voice didn't break until he was 16. He did grow in 6th form and caught up with his peers. He's now 6'2". I think he was about 19 when he reached that height.

Boys often grow throughout their teens, so I wouldn't worry.

OneTC · 27/03/2023 13:49

I stopped growing at about 13-14.

Would have been nice to make it to 5' 6" though 😅

ClaraThePigeon · 27/03/2023 13:50

A friend's son is 14 and 6'6. She's hoping that he stops growing soon but no sign of it yet.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 27/03/2023 13:50

My almost 15 year old has had his growth spurt and is 5’10 currently but I suspect he’s going to eke out another couple of inches before he’s 18. 13 year old DS is 5’8 with enormous size 11 feet. I expect he’s got a few more years of growth yet.

I was under the assumption that boys continue to grow in height until they’re 18 or so.

DrManhattan · 27/03/2023 13:52

My 18 year old is 5 10 and has been since he was 15. Boys are usually at least as tall as their mum.

mumonthehill · 27/03/2023 13:52

Ds 16 has just had a big growth spurt so i would say he still has time. Older ds and dh both tall so thought he would grow a bit taller and he is now 6ft.

Sunshineismyfriend · 27/03/2023 13:53

Hopefully there’s still a bit more growth in him yet then. We will wait and see. Just seems weird that he hasn’t grown at all for quite a while. I think spring and summer are always when kids seem to grow the most so maybe we will see a change soon. He does have size 10.5 feet so would be good if his feet didn’t get any bigger.

He is taller than me but I’m short at only 5 ft 3.

Mine is 16 and still growing, though slower than he was. He's 6'5 so hoping he stops soon, but I noticed this morning that his shirt was only just touching the top of his trousers where it was not long, but ok only a couple of months ago

cheeseisthebest · 27/03/2023 13:56

My 11 year old is 5ft 2 and his voice is already cracking and is much deeper. He's very tall compared to his friends but seems so early for his voice to be changing!

Eh, how can you say that? What a weird sweeping statement with no basis.

My son didn't grow after fourteen and neither did his dad! Both about 5'8 or 9.

Mine was 11 when his changed too. It is early. Especially when I think he’s had a broken voice for over 2 years and some of his friends voices are the same as they were at primary. That’s why I’m not sure if he’ll grow any more. Feels like he did his spurt early and may be done with it now.

One of my sons was the smallest in his class until he was 15, and then had a growth spurt over the summer hols. He’s now 6ft 3!

Snorlaxing · 27/03/2023 14:07

How tall is his dad? My sons did most of their growing at 14/15 and ended up the same height as their dad.

User963 · 27/03/2023 14:09

How tall is his dad? It sounds like you are not on the tall side for a woman at 5ft 3. If his dad is also on the short size then he might have almost finished growing, although I'm sure he might gradually gain another inch or 2. If on the other hand is dad is 6ft then he probably hasn't finished growing. I'm sure DS has had periods where he hasn't grown for 6 months or so throughout his life. He hasn't hit puberty yet though so can't comment on that.

Sunshineismyfriend · 27/03/2023 14:13

His dad is 5ft 8. Hopefully he’ll get to at least that height or he won’t be happy! 🤣
