To ask if your son stopped growing at 13/14?

Mine is 14 in April and seems to have stopped growing. He is 5 ft 6 and would like to be taller. He seems to have had his major growth spurt and voice has broken a couple of years ago so I expect he won’t have another big growth spurt but he’s hoping to get a bit taller but hasn’t grown for 6 months. Is it likely that all his growing is done by 13? Seems early but who knows. Has anyone else’s son stopped growing by this age?

I am 5ft3in, husband is 6 foot, our youngest son is only 5ft6in and almost 17 - so sadly, I think that's it for him, he hates being short but must have inherited my genes (oh the guilt!) - he has not grown much since 14/15 - eldest son is over 6ft which makes it even harder for him in comparison 😣

Pinkbananas01 · 27/03/2023 14:18

My DS both had main growth spurt around 14yrs, have kept growing more slowly putting on another 6-7 inches to reach just under 6ft
19yo seems to have stopped now, 17 yo still going

JuneBridie · 27/03/2023 14:31

Mine didn’t start till he was 14/15. He was the smallest in his year (about 5 feet) then over the course of about 6 weeks shot up to 5 feet 10 inches. He’s 21 now and just over six feet so evidently still growing. DH and i aren’t tall, no idea how he is as tall as he is.

Mañanarama · 27/03/2023 14:48

My son is 15 and hasn’t grown at all for about six months, he’s 5’9” and I’m hoping he grows a bit more. He had one really tall grandad and one about his size, his dad is nearly 6’, I’m nearly 5’5”. His voice broke when he was about 14 and he’s broadened out, zero armpit hair yet though.

Fingers crossed he has another growth spurt, but I’ve heard they’ve done most of it by age 16.

chopc · 27/03/2023 14:48

Mine did . We are both tall (6ft 1 and 5ft 7) but he had a growth spurt at 13 and another didn't come. He is 5ft 8ish

Gosh this sounds both scary and amazing! My DS is 13.5 and about 5'2". He's grown v slowly but is on the shorter side amongst is friends. His voice hasn't changed yet either whereas lots of his friends sound like men now. So I'm waiting for / expecting a sudden leap upwards fairly soon. Especially as he is eating HUGE amounts right now but I'd still super skinny. Those calories must be creating something somewhere!

WellTidy · 27/03/2023 15:14

This is all very interesting. DS is 15yo and 5 foot 4, and I wonder if he has already stopped growing or whether he has more growing to do. He went through puberty from 12yo, voice broke at 12yo, and has just grown very very gradually, no real growth spurt.

DH on the other hand went through puberty a little later than DS, and had a growth spurt at 18yo to get to 5 foot 9.5 inches.

He has done well. My 81yo dad reached 5 foot 1 at 14yo and hasn’t grown since!

StarmanBobby · 27/03/2023 15:16

At that age he's more than likely to have some growing to do. Everyone's different though.

simbobs · 27/03/2023 15:19

My DS definitely continued to grow until he was 19. He never quite got to 6ft, though his dad and older brothers are over. I am small, though, and he is more like my side of the family. I wouldn't make the assumption that yours has finished growing just yet.

The exact same thing happened to my older brother which is why I wasn’t too concerned that DS was so small for his age. He was definitely self conscious about his (lack of) height but I just kept telling him about his uncle and not to worry about it.

We did go down a very high protein diet route, he ate a lot of steak, fish, chicken so that might have made a difference too.

JeanMarsh · 27/03/2023 15:28

My DS stopped growing at 16 1/2. He never had a growth spurt it was all very gradual. I think he is 5ft 9 ish now, age 19.

JustAnotherUsey · 27/03/2023 15:42

As a secondary teacher, from what I have seen boys tend to keep growing up until 18 and maybe beyond(which I don't see once they have left!). It's varied and boys grow at different stages. From my experience I've noticed some boys can grow loads between year 11 until year 13 and some get quite tall! But there are also boys that are short to start and tend to stay relatively short!

At 14 he could well have a few more growth spurts to come.

MonkeyMindAllOverAround · 27/03/2023 15:47

It depends on a lot of factors. My son was quite small at 13 but got to 5’7” at 16. He was quite disappointed when at a medical appointment a nurse told him that at 16 that was his final height. He was still growing at 17, at 20 he was 6’1”

He looks as if he is still growing but it may be me going down 🤣

TheHouseNextDoor · 27/03/2023 16:09

Mine was very average height till 16. He now 6'4". Think he's stopped now aged 19.

Denialisariverinegypt · 27/03/2023 16:11

I stopped growing at 11yrs!

Are you male? 11 is unusually early to stop growing for a male. Still early but not quite as unusual for a female.

SiobhanSharpe · 27/03/2023 16:23

DS was about 5'8" at 13/14 after his biggest growth spurt and then grew more slowly until he reached his adult height, just under six feet, at about 18.

AddictedtoCrunchies · 27/03/2023 16:32

Mine's just turned 15 but hasn't really grown for 12 months. However he is almost 6ft 5, so I'm hoping that's it for now..

angelpoise · 27/03/2023 16:34

He might grow more, he might not. Nothing you have been told here is going to give you answers for your son. If you are concerned you can take him to a paediatrician and get a bone scan of his wrist to see whether the growth plates have fused.

I’m not concerned. If he stays at 5 ft 6 then he does. I was just interested to see if other boys who went through puberty early stopped growing earlier. Or if it was likely that a 13 year old could have finished growing.

He'll probably be slightly shorter than his dad, as the height genes he has are his Dad's height moderated by your slightly short genes.

It was often thought children grew taller than their parents but that was more down to available nutrition changing.

Boys reach their full height at a huge range of ages. My father was his full height at 14, my son had a growth spurt at 17.

That’s not true in all cases though. My dad was 6’1, his dad was about 5’6 and his mum about 5’2”. He’d outgrown them both by secondary school!

Highlyflavouredgravy · 27/03/2023 16:55

He won't have stopped growing yet. Boys keep going gor ages....just because it is not continuous doesn't mean it won't hapoen. My eldest wax 5 foot 10 at 13 and 6 foot 3 at 14. He then continued to grow until he was about 20 but less dramatically.

Cherubiminal · 27/03/2023 17:20

My nephew was always the smallest in his year then suddenly he shot up and was over 6ft at 16, now at just turned 20 he's 6ft 5in.
