To ask if your son stopped growing at 13/14?

Mine is 14 in April and seems to have stopped growing. He is 5 ft 6 and would like to be taller. He seems to have had his major growth spurt and voice has broken a couple of years ago so I expect he won’t have another big growth spurt but he’s hoping to get a bit taller but hasn’t grown for 6 months. Is it likely that all his growing is done by 13? Seems early but who knows. Has anyone else’s son stopped growing by this age?

That's really interesting @Tomeeornottomee. I don't know if ds' growth has paused or stopped. Did your son continue to grow after puberty?

FunnysInLaJardin · 01/10/2023 23:29

DS1 stopped really about aged 15 and is 5.11 aged 18.

DS2 is the same size aged 13 and I am not sure whether he will continue to grow or not. Prob got another couple of inches in him!

Oblomov23 · 01/10/2023 23:32

Some boys stop growing by 16. Most by 21.
I think ds1 had stopped at 19. Ds2 I think will end up taller than him. I'm very short and I just wanted my boys to be a decent height, which they both already are.

Sonolanona · 01/10/2023 23:38

Both my Dh and DS1 were 'slow growers' I think DS2 was about 5 ft 4 at 14, as people thought he and his younger sister were twins.
But at some point he had another spurt and is now 5 ft 10. His Dad kept growing slowly til he was 20 and is 5 ft 9.

Really hoping my little DGS does the same.. currently he's on the 1st centile and destined to be a garden gnome... but his Mum my DD2 is only 5 ft 2 and Dad 5 ft 7, so we aren't holding our breath!!!!

Caerulea · 02/10/2023 00:24

OP please try not to let him worry/focus about his height, there's a real thing among young men about height (& hairlines🤦🏼‍♀️) so he's going to feel pressure outside of the family anyway. He'll be whatever he is & it's far better that he's not self-conscious about it.

Ds2 is shorter than DS1 & DS3 & the latter has been a bit of a pig about it, I've had to take him aside multiple times & thankfully he's stopped. I realised yesterday DS2 had avoided being measured for nearly a YEAR cos he was sick of his younger brother going on about his own height (he's now 15 & nearly 6ft 2). As it is he's nearly caught up (so there's your different growth spurt ages) but it's kinda beside the point, he felt bad about not being as tall.

Goreg · 02/10/2023 00:40

I agree it's best not to make an issue out of it. Growth patterns seem to vary quite widely. Boys can continue to grow until they're 21 but they don't always. For many there is a lot of banging on about how tall they are, from peers and family which is awful, given that it's not something you can control. Better to focus on goals he can actually work towards.

When DD had X-rays to check for potential breaks the a and e practitioner also showed us the unfused bone plates ( on her feet) meaning she was still growing, this happened to be at 13, and on another occasion the fused plates ( on her hands) confirming she had stopped growing by 15.

we weren’t seeking info about growth, but there for other clinical reasons, but something to keep in mind to ask if you are (unlucky) enough to be in for x rays for other reasons

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/10/2023 06:14

DM swears that DBro was still growing at 20. DS is still growing at 15.

Tomeeornottomee · 02/10/2023 12:35

@EstherFester yes, he started to hit puberty at around the same time he paused in height...then afterwards he had a massive growth spurt. Apparently the same thing happened to DH. Early teens; short, skinny and squeaky voiced, late teens; hairy, tall but still skinny. Neither of them filled out till they were in their mid 20s.

CornishGem1975 · 02/10/2023 12:40

Mine is 16 and still growing but he didn't really start spurting up until 14/15.

Trainplan · 02/10/2023 12:45

My Dad reckons he was 5'4" at 14 and he's now 6ft. Had a spurt at 17yo apparently.

My DSs did shoot up at 13/14 yo but they definitely grew a bit more later in their teens too.

Deadringer · 02/10/2023 12:50

As a pp said boys can keep growing into their early 20s. Anecdotally, most boys end up taller than their fathers, at least by a little bit.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 02/10/2023 12:53

I think they all stop growing at different ages. DS is 14, about 5’8 and definitely still growing as he looks down on me a little more each day 😂. His massively curly hair add a few more inches too 😂. I’m 5’4 and he was always a tiny child so I thought he’d be on the short side but he’s pretty average now. DH is 6’ exactly and says he was the smallest in his class until he was 16. I’m not sure DS will make 6’ but he has long legs and my family all have short legs so who knows?

PamelaDawes · 02/10/2023 12:58

No, this is a happy lockdown story.

16 year old DS was a fussy vegan with braces (which limited what he could hear) and bringing huel to school. In lockdown he started having 3 square meals a day and grew three inches.

The other DS was 6ft at age 14, very tall relative to everyone else. He grew maybe another inch after that. He’s 17 now and says he is average tall - the others caught up.

Wolvesart · 02/10/2023 13:20

Re to tell if they have more growing to do. When our DC was in Yr8 something called Medical Mavericks came to the school. There was some sort of way to say if people had stopped growing. It might be on their website. Son said quite a lot of the girls were told they had. Our son was then still quite small, height, feet, hands. He was delighted to be informed he had a lot of growing to do. They were very right, he’s 6ft tall and shoe size keeps going up and up.

DelilahBucket · 02/10/2023 13:37

Biggest growth spurt from DS so far has been this year, starting a few months after he turned 15. I don't think he's done yet. DH was one of the shortest in his year until he was 16. He's 6ft2 now and one of the tallest.

NightLightHalfLight · 02/10/2023 16:11

DS grew till he was about 18 he is very tall at 6ft 5, his Dad is 6ft 1.

DS has always liked his sleep a lot and I read relatively recently that the hormone linked to growth is produced while you sleep.

EstherFester · 03/10/2023 08:20

Dh grew a few inches after he was 16. Did any of you hear of similarities between your ds and their dad's growth?
Ds is 16 and has body and facial hair, but not on his back/chest yet. He hasn't grown much for the past couple of years. I know he isn't completely happy with his height and it's a few inches shorter than his dad, so maybe he has more growing to do...

whattttttodo · 03/10/2023 09:09

My husband claims he stopped growing around the age of 14/15 he's 5.8

MuddlingMackem · 03/10/2023 21:07

@EstherFester late developer, voice only started really getting deeper when he had his growth spurt. Still rather sparse on the facial hair. Grin
