To ask if your son stopped growing at 13/14?

Mine is 14 in April and seems to have stopped growing. He is 5 ft 6 and would like to be taller. He seems to have had his major growth spurt and voice has broken a couple of years ago so I expect he won’t have another big growth spurt but he’s hoping to get a bit taller but hasn’t grown for 6 months. Is it likely that all his growing is done by 13? Seems early but who knows. Has anyone else’s son stopped growing by this age?

Female. Stopped at 5.1. it was a long running joke at school when we got weighed and measured. 😒. But I'm aging better than all the cows who were fucking horrible to me. Plus I don't have to pay Vat on my shoes thanks to the kids size of my feet. Now I'm losing the weight again im nearly back to my former petite self 😁

Denialisariverinegypt · 27/03/2023 17:31

My sister also stopped but reached 5.6! Always taller than me!

Okunevo · 27/03/2023 17:36

DS started growing more than his usual 5-6 centimetres a year and his voice broke at 14. He was 5ft 2 at 14, now 5ft 10 at 16. He hasn't grown much since turning 16.

WeeBitOfWoo · 27/03/2023 17:38

DS is 18. He grew 3 inches between 14-16, going from 6’1 to 6’4.

Stopped growing height-wise at 16, but his shape changed a lot between 16-18 - his shoulders got broader, waist narrower, much more manly looking basically!

Sunshineismyfriend · 27/03/2023 17:51

Thanks all. I’ll measure him again in a couple of months and see if there are any changes. I guess if he hasn’t grown in a year there won’t be any more growth.

I stopped growing at 11yrs!

If you are a girl, that’s not so unusual. Women normally stop growing a year after their first period. I did stop growing at 13 but that last year I grew up about 6 inches.

BasiliskStare · 27/03/2023 18:09

@Sunshineismyfriend if you are truly worried there a test re bones ( I think as @angelpoise is referring to ) a friend of mine's son is about 5 5 5 6 and as a teenager she had this test done & they said that is his height. But the young man is confident and happy just a few inches shorter than some of his friends. I do not mean to be alarmist about this . He could very well grow more as he is only 14 . But , it is not the worst thing in the world if he does not.

Oblomov23 · 27/03/2023 18:13

Ds1 grew till about 16 I think. Ds2 is still growing at nearly 15.

nokidshere · 28/03/2023 01:23

DS1 had a massive growth spurt at age 12, he grew 10 inches between May & August and was 6ft when he went back to school in September. He is now 24 and still 6ft.

DS2 grew steadily every year until he was 21 when he stopped at 6ft4.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not truly worried. If he stays at 5 ft 6 he does. It’s not the end of the world at all. He would just like to be taller and I am curious. Seems like he’s had his big growth spurt and doesn’t appear to be growing now as been around 6 months with no growth. Just wondered if he was likely to have finished growing at just 13 or if there may be a couple more inches to go (as he would like). Not going to worry the doctor about it.

Mine didn’t start growing till then. At 11/12/13 he was tiny compared to all his friends but from 14-16 he grew and is now average height. 5ft 10 with size 10 feet.

RandomMess · 28/03/2023 10:03

DH did 6'3 by 13/14

My son is 16 and quite a bit shorter than his dad. He shot up at around age 11 and went through puberty quite early and quickly. I don't think he's grown much since age 13/14 and is currently 5'9 and has quite a lot of facial hair now. We all thought he would be taller than this, so I'm wondering if any of your boys continued growing after puberty - after facial, leg hair etc??

pinkhousesarebest · 01/10/2023 22:11

Yes my son was 5´8 at 14 and never grew another smidgen, to his angst. We knew he wouldn’t as he had a scan of his wrist for orthodontics and she said his joints had already fused and it was game over.

EstherFester · 01/10/2023 22:52

Oh 😬
Out of interest, why was his wrist x-rayed for orthodontics?

Highlyflavouredgravy · 01/10/2023 22:56

No he didn't stop until he was 20. He is exceptionally tall though so I don't know if that makes a difference.

EstherFester · 01/10/2023 23:05

@Highlyflavouredgravy
Did he continue to grow after puberty had ended? After facial / body hair etc?

Highlyflavouredgravy · 01/10/2023 23:11

Yes. His first year at university he grew about an inch or two.

Splat92 · 01/10/2023 23:11

My boys went through puberty early. They finished their big growth spurt at 14 but grew slightly more after that but probably only another 2 inches in total. I think they completely stopped at 16.

Wolvesart · 01/10/2023 23:11

Our DS did most of his serious growing post 15. He’s just turned 18 and I don’t think he’s stopped growing. Went up a half shoe size over the summer and is a full shoe size bigger than last summer.

The DH was on University Challenge age 19, he was about 5ft 7 then and he grew to 5 ft 9 subsequently.

I would think your DC still has some growing to do OP

MuddlingMackem · 01/10/2023 23:14

Our DS stopped growing at around 14 or 15 at about that height. Then he shot up to 6 foot at around 18 / 19. Nightmare for trousers now, 33" inside leg!

familyissues12345 · 01/10/2023 23:14

My 14 year old went through puberty early (was shaving weekly in year 6!) and is now about 5ft 9. Hasn't grown for about a year so think that's it. I'm 5'7, Dad is 6ft and big brother 6ft 2. He would love to be taller but don't think it's going to happen.

Strangely he hasn't grown into his size 11 feet!

EstherFester · 01/10/2023 23:19

@MuddlingMackem
Did he go through puberty early or later? And did he continue to grow after he had facial and body hair? My ds hasn't grown much in the past couple of years and now has quite a lot of facial hair and I'm wondering if he'll grow anymore to be closer in height to his dad.

I'd say it would be on the early side for a boy to stop growing but with you and DH not being very tall he may well not get much taller.

I thought my 16yo DD had stopped growing, she was about an inch shorter than me 6 months ago (and had been for about 18 months) and she is now exactly the same height as me, so even girls can grow a bit at that age.

Tomeeornottomee · 01/10/2023 23:19

My DS 's height "paused" at about 5ft5 (my height) between the ages of 14-16...then he just shot up between 17-19.. by the time he was 21 he was 6'3. Mind you his dad is 6'4. I get neck ache talking to the men in my life 🤣
