American surgeon working for UN peace keepers in Syria sent me face book friend request AIBU to start messaging and see where it goes?

Not really, obviously, just gobsmacked at the brass neck. Who are these people? How do they get my name? How many friend requests do they send out in an average day? how many people respond to them? I thought I recognised him from a local hobby group, so accepted the request, but have unfriended him now.

Is this a full time job for some people?

Do they make a living out of it?

Should we all give it a go and stop worrying about UC, sick pay, salaries, and pay rises?

Who has contacted you? What became of it?

Is anyone on face book ever genuine?

Christ my mum falls for them all the time - Facebook dating 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

The worst one was a surgeon, 20 years younger than her who sent her photos of him sking, skydiving, caving, surfing, yachting, rally driving and paragliding . She didn’t think there was anything weird about the fact you couldn’t see his face in any of them and they all looked like professional photos 🙄🙄🙄. Colour me surprised when she said his bank account was frozen and could she help.

Nimbostratus100 · 21/03/2023 18:58

I have just put some of his photos into Google image search, and the same photo is coming up under 4 different names

Are they always surgeons? (Pretending to be)

I think its quite common, but other professions crop up too. Its anything that is associated with money, intelligence, courage, compassion, etc

But he might need a money transfer OP, urgently, to continue his good works.

Bit mean to unfriend him.

I get loads of requests on the 'gram. You must have to be dim, or extremely lonely, to fall for this.

FisherThem · 21/03/2023 19:04

My husband gets Orthodox priests.... what that says about his search history I have no idea!

wordler · 21/03/2023 19:04

I once got one and it was clearly someone faking it - it was a Turkish doctor but if you went far back enough in the photos they were all being liked by the same 2-3 Pakistani posters.

In one of the images it had a poster of the real doctor's clinic so I zoomed in found the real name and did a search.

It turned out there was a real person who had their own page and the scammer had just cloned all the info to set up a scam profile.

What was really annoying was I reported the scam profile to Facebook and got a message back saying it wasn't breaking any of their community guidelines which made me think that the complaints are screened by a computer and just not getting through to a real person to understand that there wasn't an issue with the content but that it was a cloned site.

I reported again and also messaged the real doctor and let them know that there was someone pretending to be them. Never heard back from the real person but Facebook denied my second report as well.

people must fall for it though, or these fraudsters wouldn't invest so much time and energy into doing it?

I seem to get a lot of US Army (active or retired, they're not fussy) contacting me.
It's a shame they don't know that my first husband was American and that put me off for life 😂

ShandaLear · 21/03/2023 19:06

Mine all look like a sexy Captain Birdseye

Rantypanties · 21/03/2023 19:08

Feeling a bit left out of these shenanigans, my fb photo is obviously not sexy enough!!! 😂

I get these (scam) friend requests every day!!
So annoying.
One day recently I messaged a 'man' who was obviously a scam request and said, to the scammers stop sending me these stupid scam requests!!
So for about a week after that I got no more scam friend requests.
Now they've started again. So it's delete, delete.

One profile was hilarious... it had the typical American widower oil worker silver fox profile picture then I scrolled down the profile and there was another profile photo.., of an African guy with a Nigerian name doh!!
It did make me laugh.

UnicornsHaveDadsToo · 21/03/2023 19:10

It'll be a bullshit account. There are too few troops in the US peacekeeping mission in Syria for them to have a forces surgeon. Unfortunately, the dashing surgeon saving lives stereotype is far too easy to create online, and for some reason, it's far too attractive an image.

I can assure you that the truth about surgeons isn't true; for one thing, most of them are absolute c*s. I know. I no longer operate, but I'm still Mr Unicorn FRCS... Hold on. That makes me... 😳😳😱😱

InSpainTheRain · 21/03/2023 19:12

I had had requests from General Petraeus several times. He had a lot of trouble making cash withdrawals in the country where he is on active service a d wanted me to help him just until he got it sorted. I have mentioned "oh I thought you were retired" a few times 😀

HirplesWithHaggis · 21/03/2023 19:13

I had a spate of retired American military men, good Christians all. I'm happily married, pro CND, and atheist.

I did suggest putting them all in contact with one another so they could form a support group, radio silence. 🙄

QOD · 21/03/2023 19:15

mine are all widowed oil workers with 1 child and working in the carribean

TomatoSandwiches · 21/03/2023 19:21

I get lots of " helo beutiful laidey, my gratful wish 🙏 to be you're most lovely friend, plz, can we chat now ❤️🙏 "

But no surgeons or orthodox priests as of yet 😔😂

LooseGoose22 · 21/03/2023 19:23

Lmao at the Captain Birdseye stuff.

A man whose pics were the most statistically used the most was tracked down and interviewed by some show like Dr Phil in the US. I can't remember if he was retired from the army or not by that point but he was an attractive, but not crazy handsome v masculine looking 40 something and when asked by he thought he was a scammer all time favourite, he said possibly because he was smiling in all the pics (the reason sing his elderly Mum was very worried about him serving in the ME and he was trying to reassure her in his photos .... Aww).

LooseGoose22 · 21/03/2023 19:23

Sorry, that was two mosts.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 21/03/2023 19:23

This reminds me of Daisy May Cooper and her ‘sea captain’ during lockdown.

Jesko · 21/03/2023 19:25
