American surgeon working for UN peace keepers in Syria sent me face book friend request AIBU to start messaging and see where it goes?

Not really, obviously, just gobsmacked at the brass neck. Who are these people? How do they get my name? How many friend requests do they send out in an average day? how many people respond to them? I thought I recognised him from a local hobby group, so accepted the request, but have unfriended him now.

Is this a full time job for some people?

Do they make a living out of it?

Should we all give it a go and stop worrying about UC, sick pay, salaries, and pay rises?

Who has contacted you? What became of it?

Is anyone on face book ever genuine?

Dr Mike (Internet star) messaged me on here and is in love with me. It’s so heartwarming all of these men are out there messaging us.

Isseywith3witchycats · 21/03/2023 21:27

My one wasn't an army surgeon he was a highly trained weapons expert in Iran so i strung him along for a while he was going to come to England and his only child would come over from America too with the nanny who looks after him and we could buy a house together , funnily enough he was this high powered guy who asked me if i could top up his phone so he could talk to his superior officer and when i told him I Couldnt even afford to top up my own phone he sort of vanished into thin air lol

Another one with a male/female name. I am loved by Russian women who want to show me a good time. I might ask them what they think about Ukraine.

Nimbostratus100 · 21/03/2023 21:48

my poor surgeon has just disclosed that he is a widower with a son who is "far from him" - I expect he will need train fare, quite soon, dont you? I thought I'd blocked him, but still getting messages, so have blocked him again

I have a female name, but I still get Russian women.... equal opportunities and all that, I guess

A friend of my OH was contacted by a handsome 45 year old foreign “senior police officer” and she fell for it. Thing is though….HE sent money to HER!

He flirted for a few weeks and then told her he wanted to set up a security business with her in the UK. So, he sent her around £5k for safekeeping.

A week later, he asked her to pay it into a different account in his name. It was obviously a money laundering thing, he was washing the money through her current account. Once she had transferred the money, he disappeared.

He had done it with multiple women, it transpires. He was using the profile pic and name of an innocent middle-aged man who knew nothing about what was going on.

When I was young my mate noticed small amounts of money appearing in his account, and being skint all the time he was withdrawing it and not really making much effort to find out where it was coming from in case it stopped happening.

Anyway one day he got a letter explaining that someone had been paying money into his bank account pretending to be him in an attempt to build enough of a relationship with the cashier so that they'd let him do a withdrawal one day without ID.

My mate never even had more than 30 quid in his account so don't know how or why he was targeted, or how stupid the person doing it must have been

Are they always surgeons? (Pretending to be)

I seem to get American army and navy....Generals or somesuch.

WhiteFire · 21/03/2023 22:01

Well OP when he is kidnapped by the local gorillas* and you refuse to send him money and he is unable to carry out his vital work, then you'll be sorry.

*intentional

US army colonels etc seem to be attracted to my FB profile.

Last one I actually accepted and then straight away messaged him and said I had a big bill and was asking all my FB friends to contribute. He unfriended me....

Nimbostratus100 · 21/03/2023 22:02

now blocked and reported....

Ugh I’ve always found doctors and surgeons a bit off putting. Knowing that their first experience of the female body was probably a cadaver in medical school would put me right off going to bed with one.

Mind you, I’ve been getting a lot of emails from American politicians which isn’t any improvement.

My favourite scanners are the ones who take the trouble to write to me as gaeilge. I appreciate the cúpla focail even if it’s to blackmail me over my sex life.

youwouldthink · 21/03/2023 22:05

I get the widowed army generals desperately looking for love in their lives again!

HereComesMaleficent · 21/03/2023 22:07

Am I the bad person who cons the con artist and has made about £25 from this 😳

So I go along with it for a bit, then they ask for money, so I say if you send £1 to my PayPal account, I can then grab your details and send money back, but I need the £1 first to know the transaction will work.

They send the £1. I then block them 🤣

red78hot · 21/03/2023 22:08

To name a few
A guy in Pakistan, who video called me at work, I let my supervisor answer 🤣
A shoe sniffer from Sheffield who would pay £2 for a picture of my feet.
A Turkish guy with a profile picture holding 2 mahoosive rifles.
Aaaaand the most recent, an Egyptian guy who's wife had died and wanted me to go and live with him and look after his 2 kids 🤣
These were all genuine profiles. (I checked them thoroughly) None sent friend requests, just used messenger, swifly followed by the block button 😅
Also had a few obvious fake profiles too

I've never had this type of contact on any sm and feel like I'm missing out. I'm tempted to create an insta account just to bag one of these charmers.

I hope she just kept the 5K. Crying with laughter at some of these.

I used to get loads through LinkedIn of all social media platforms!

Scammers, you've got to give them points for their nerve, right? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Why on earth would that be their first experience of a female body? Such a weird comment!

Suzi888 · 21/03/2023 22:27

American Military men, most on Insta and a couple on fb. I can’t believe people fall for it.

Appalonia · 21/03/2023 22:33

Ha I used to get this a lot playing online Scrabble. One guy claimed to be a British Dr working in Miami. Blocked him when I realised his photo was Adam, a real Dr from Love Island!

I only play Scrabble against the computer now...

Fromwetome · 21/03/2023 22:35

If you like seeing where these messages go you'll love the show 90 day fiancé..where 60 year old women believe they have found the love of their life in a man 30 years their junior. It's brilliant trash tv

tillytoodles1 · 21/03/2023 22:41

I keep getting foreign men wanting to be my friend because they've seen my profile picture and I'm so beautiful they can't resist me. The photo is my niece and my granddaughter.
