Embarrassed to be from England

hi

I’m English but live in Scotland. Me and my Scottish friends were just subject to three white, English men from Grantham / Skegness screaming about loving Margaret thatcher, how all weegies are junkies, and how they’d r* the Scottish and lesbian out of us and screaming about how they voted brexit to get rid of ‘jock’ bastards. This is in Scotland. Luckily for these three me and my friends do not tolerate such ridiculous behaviour and they had a quick lesson.

However, as a person unfortunate enough to have an English accent and have grown up In a neighbouring county it is highly embarrassing to have experienced this. I have made a home in Scotland, having experienced such homophobia and witnessing such ignorance and racism on a daily basis in my English hometown, whilst I am not claiming my new home to be perfect I feel far safer as a lesbian than at home, where it is unsafe to be visibly queer.

Ultimately, there are plenty of English people like me who are grateful for Scotland for being so welcoming and if racist and stupid individuals want to scream anti Scottish abuse they could refrain from living here and inflicting their presence upon everyone.

They actually screamed at us about their mothers being on mumsnet - so if anyone has a son aged 25-35 from Grantham / Skegness who is working away in glasgow, this is an fyi that they are abusing people in the street.

@JoonT

Because the English are one of the few groups it's acceptable to hate, ridicule, stereotype, project things onto, etc. Our 'woke'-liberal culture has evolved a new hierarchy, and the English are right near the bottom.

100% this. For some inexplicable reason, it seems to be OK to bash and knock and absolutely vilify the English. Not sure why it's allowed, because this would not be allowed if ANY other nationality was being bashed and berated.

Aposterhasnoname · 09/03/2023 15:55

Change the word English for literally any other group and you’d be vilified to hell, and rightly so. I

Theluggage15 · 09/03/2023 16:05

Can’t believe anyone thinks this actually happened.

Yes, which is why I've no idea why MN thinks this is ok to run.

ConcordeOoter · 09/03/2023 16:14

Yeah, I'll take "things that never happened" for ten points.

I remember a young Scottisy man whose head was so full of SNO shit, he thought that daily life in England involved hating Scotland for most people, that everyone was obsessed with and jealous of Scotland and people from Scotland living in eg the home counties were constantly subject to anti scottish hate crime. He was actually sceptical when told nah that ... isn't a thing most people are sort of indifferent to Scotland or quite like it.

I know one person, ever, in nearly 50 years who has said they dislike Scots, and that was after he was beaten up badly in Scotland for being English - which hilariously he wasn't.

Jumped the shark there I think.

monsterradeliciosa · 09/03/2023 16:40

You didn't decide to be English, absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about.

PelicanWings · 09/03/2023 16:48

Why on earth did they mention their mothers being on Mumsnet? What does that have to do with anything?

@Mutabiliss they didn't, this is made up. Have reported op for trolling.

Maireas · 09/03/2023 16:55

Me too, @PelicanWings , but the response was that they're happy to let this continue.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/03/2023 16:59

You're being ridiculous. Three men are not representative of 55 million people.

Karen398 · 09/03/2023 17:03

I'm from Scotland and that person must have a death wish ! I lived 14 years in England too and most obviously aren't like that
