Embarrassed to be from England

hi

I’m English but live in Scotland. Me and my Scottish friends were just subject to three white, English men from Grantham / Skegness screaming about loving Margaret thatcher, how all weegies are junkies, and how they’d r* the Scottish and lesbian out of us and screaming about how they voted brexit to get rid of ‘jock’ bastards. This is in Scotland. Luckily for these three me and my friends do not tolerate such ridiculous behaviour and they had a quick lesson.

However, as a person unfortunate enough to have an English accent and have grown up In a neighbouring county it is highly embarrassing to have experienced this. I have made a home in Scotland, having experienced such homophobia and witnessing such ignorance and racism on a daily basis in my English hometown, whilst I am not claiming my new home to be perfect I feel far safer as a lesbian than at home, where it is unsafe to be visibly queer.

Ultimately, there are plenty of English people like me who are grateful for Scotland for being so welcoming and if racist and stupid individuals want to scream anti Scottish abuse they could refrain from living here and inflicting their presence upon everyone.

They actually screamed at us about their mothers being on mumsnet - so if anyone has a son aged 25-35 from Grantham / Skegness who is working away in glasgow, this is an fyi that they are abusing people in the street.

Christmascracker0 · 09/03/2023 07:57

The hatred of the Scots towards the English is much more prevalent.

Yeah, this happened.
And then did everyone clap, OP?

Annoyingwurringnoise · 09/03/2023 08:00

Lol, 3/10.

Marchitectmummy · 09/03/2023 08:02

Rather than being ashamed, why not show you are English and how decent many in England are?

inamarina · 09/03/2023 08:02

Maireas · 09/03/2023 05:34

"screamed at us about their mothers being on Mumsnet"
🤔

Exactly 😃 I’m just trying to picture 25-30 year old men shouting “and my mum’s on mumsnet, you know!” Err, very bizarre…

Calistan · 09/03/2023 08:03

I have no words haha

mellybumps · 09/03/2023 08:04

As if 😂

Calistan · 09/03/2023 08:05

And the 4 presumably older women "sorted them out". Maybe they told them no is a full sentence and accused them of being on glue <Grange Hill music>

ClareBlue · 09/03/2023 08:08

GreenWheat · 09/03/2023 05:12

Had they been from, say, Ireland and shouting abuse at you, would you have been embarressed for the entire Irish nation? I think we tend to focus on our own nationality, but arseholes live everywhere unfortunately.

Absolute this. In the last year I have been in Hungary and Poland and seen local gangs being abusive and racists and just thought they were a few idiots. I was in England before Christmas and saw a couple of English being idiots and was really embarrassed and made excuses to the Irish person I was with. You definitely are more sensitive when it is obviously someone from your Country doing it. But every country has these people, including Scotland. And there are thousands of Scottish people welcomed and happily living in England as there are Irish in England and vice versa.

Mamamia7962 · 09/03/2023 08:15

Try harder next time OP.

FiveShelties · 09/03/2023 08:16

I thought you had truly jumped the shark OP and cannot believe people are posting serious replies to you.

ClareBlue · 09/03/2023 08:16

England doesn't have a government

frustratednomad · 09/03/2023 08:18

@Riapia I'm also from Lincolnshire and I can confirm that we truly are the most despicable people on earth, maybe we should all lock ourselves in our houses so we don't inflict our nastiness on others.

User15953798 · 09/03/2023 08:27

I can't believe the serious replies either

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 09/03/2023 08:30

To be fair @Hdkatznahtw125sgh I was with you (a bit) until you posted your last paragraph.

They actually screamed at us about their mothers being on mumsnet - so if anyone has a son aged 25-35 from Grantham / Skegness who is working away in glasgow, this is an fyi that they are abusing people in the street.

You're pulling our wee leggies aren't yer hen? Smile

maddy68 · 09/03/2023 08:31

I am frequently embarrassed to be British. I live in a different country and visiting Brits are the sunburned vest wearing (if you are lucky!) Loud drunk Brits

It's mortifying

CatsShittyArses · 09/03/2023 08:32

You get dickheads in every country

ZeldaB · 09/03/2023 08:32

So you met some drunk wankers who shouted abuse. Big surprise, can happen anywhere. It’s pretty dumb to decide that they represent England and be all apologist about your English roots. 🙄

There’s plenty of Scottish drunk wankers who shout abuse (particularly in Glasgow). Plenty of nice English people.

Maybe stop looking for someone to tell off / moan to and accept that you were frightened and shocked to meet some scary creeps.

FrancescaContini · 09/03/2023 08:34

They “actually screamed that their mums were on Mumsnet” 😂 yeah right

Whammyyammy · 09/03/2023 08:34

You encountered 3 idiots, they do not represent the whole population of England.

unclebuck · 09/03/2023 08:35

Calistan · 09/03/2023 08:05

And the 4 presumably older women "sorted them out". Maybe they told them no is a full sentence and accused them of being on glue <Grange Hill music>

😂

unclebuck · 09/03/2023 08:37

I'm so busy today and I keep thinking about this thread and pissing myself.
"MY MUMS ON MUMSNET" 😂

BitOutOfPractice · 09/03/2023 08:38

I think the ridiculous hatred across the border goes both ways in certain sections unfortunately. It certainly not confined to English hating the Scottish. It happens between the English and Welsh too.

Starflecked · 09/03/2023 08:38

Well, my ma posts on mumsnet is a new one 😃

Goady thread is obviously goady, but I was racially abused in Scotland and where i live in England I haven't been, yet I manage to not conflate the behaviour of a few arseholes with an entire country.
