Embarrassed to be from England

hi

I’m English but live in Scotland. Me and my Scottish friends were just subject to three white, English men from Grantham / Skegness screaming about loving Margaret thatcher, how all weegies are junkies, and how they’d r* the Scottish and lesbian out of us and screaming about how they voted brexit to get rid of ‘jock’ bastards. This is in Scotland. Luckily for these three me and my friends do not tolerate such ridiculous behaviour and they had a quick lesson.

However, as a person unfortunate enough to have an English accent and have grown up In a neighbouring county it is highly embarrassing to have experienced this. I have made a home in Scotland, having experienced such homophobia and witnessing such ignorance and racism on a daily basis in my English hometown, whilst I am not claiming my new home to be perfect I feel far safer as a lesbian than at home, where it is unsafe to be visibly queer.

Ultimately, there are plenty of English people like me who are grateful for Scotland for being so welcoming and if racist and stupid individuals want to scream anti Scottish abuse they could refrain from living here and inflicting their presence upon everyone.

They actually screamed at us about their mothers being on mumsnet - so if anyone has a son aged 25-35 from Grantham / Skegness who is working away in glasgow, this is an fyi that they are abusing people in the street.

For different reasons when I am visiting anywhere outside the UK I do my best to avoid being identified as being from these shores. I don't want to be having to talk about the economic self harm of Brexit or the wife-beater's son who was Prime Minister until last year.

Sadly there are plenty of English morons around like that. I've been embarrassed to be British/English many, many times. They seem to behave particularly badly abroad when their patriotism goes in to overdrive.
However, of course it goes without saying that plenty (most) of English people aren't this awful.
I've also seen a lot of badly behaved Scottish people abroad. I worked in a bar/restaurant in Spain and remember Scottish people saying they wouldn't come in to the bar if it served "Spanish muck" and being very rude and disparaging about anything Spanish. Also getting absolutely wasted and behaving disgracefully just like their English counterparts.

I work for one of the utilities and went in lodge working round the ibrox stadium near Glasgow
I was verbally abused and intimidated for being English

the top and bottom of it they were a handful arseholes in a shit hole area not a representation of the entire Scottish population

Oi, I lived & worked there years ago & although I met a few decent people the majority hated the English. I know they’re not all like that, but I’d rather die than go back there.

Honestly, people moaning about brits abroad must be a bit sheltered or can only speak english/only focus on english tourists.

An example: I won't name countries, but recently where I was a foreign group purposely set fire to a local club. Do I judge all from their country? Seriously no.

Oh get a grip.all.l.countries have issues ,I seriously can't see other countries really caring about Brexit,there are far more serious issues going on in the world 🙄

I have never met anyone like you are describing, my area is safe for homosexuals, trans people, black white and asian alike.
No doubt these people exist in every area, but that would be the same in Scotland.
