People who have no social media

I find it intriguing.

Just started working for someone new, was having a nosey looking for them on social media. The man isn’t on it at all, can’t be found, zero when typed into Google, the woman has a Fb profile that looks like from a long time ago, with 29 friends…that’s it, nothing else.
Does anyone find that unusual, or if you’re like this, why?
They are youngish, late 30’s, professional, good looking etc..these type of people usually have the lot on Sm.

I just find it intriguing

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 11/02/2023 08:42

Unusual yes, or at least seemingly a minority.

I have never given Mark Zuckerberg my custom, and came off Twitter and cancelled the account through lack of use. Disagree with Facebook and Instagram's lack of action to stop offensive comments (or worse).

TalkinBaaaaht · 11/02/2023 08:46

I deleted my FB around 8 years ago now.
Deleted Twitter about a year later.
Ive never been on any other SM - Indra, TikTok etc.
I don’t even use YouTube unless it’s for Yoga videos.

I’ve very reluctantly created a LinkedIn profile recently as we have to at my workplace.

I just have no interest in it. It’s a massive waste of time. I’m not trying to sell anything to anyone, I keep in touch with my friends and I read or watch films or listen to music for entertainment.

TalkinBaaaaht · 11/02/2023 08:47

Indra = Insta!

Piglet89 · 11/02/2023 08:48

This happens, OP, because these people value their privacy more than most.

EmmatheStageRat · 11/02/2023 08:48

I don’t have any social media, mainly because I am an adoptive parent and one of my children’s birth families is regarded as ‘dangerous’; we don’t want to be traced.

RoseMadderAsHell · 11/02/2023 08:48

I'm on SM but can't be found if someone googles my name.

The reason for this is because I don't want people like the OP "having a nosey" without asking my permission or me even knowing about it.. It seems such a sneaky thing to do.

TalkinBaaaaht · 11/02/2023 08:50

I don’t see MN as social media at all, btw.
it’s an old school Internet forum.

I mainly come here for the Feminism boards, only occasionally dip into the rest of the site when I’m at a loose end (been off sick from work this week).

SprayedWithDettol · 11/02/2023 08:53

I have an ancient unused FB and that is it. I don't know anyone who does use it. I've not seen instagram or TikTok.

Quveas · 10/02/2023 21:19

I have no social media. Why? I have a life, I have friends, and we do stuff in real life. We have no need of technology to be sociable

🤣🤣🤣 You are aware that you just wrote that on a social media site...?

Galadali · 11/02/2023 09:00

I use Insta and Pinterest but only for my business. Nothing personal, and you wouldn't find it if you searched by my name. My parents (both in their 80s) are crazy about FB but they're pretty much housebound and it's their way of keeping in touch with the world and their friends. I guess it would appeal to me more if I were in the same situation.

knittingaddict · 11/02/2023 09:29

I have an instagram account that I never use. My daughter set up a FB account years ago that I never used and deleted it a long time ago. Judging by the number of negative posts involving FB I'm glad I got rid of it.

MissMaple82 · 11/02/2023 09:30

Social media is for old people

Userusing1 · 11/02/2023 09:32

I only have a Twitter account but only because if I want to complain to places like British Gas it is the only way to get a response, I don't use it for social stuff, I have never had Facebook, Instagram etc.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 11/02/2023 09:38

If you looked me up you’d find absolutely nothing, not even a photo on someone else’s SM (I don’t do photos - ever)

Nor me - largely because the camera hates my face. I had a colleague who was forever taking pictures at staff get togethers for her SM and it was so annoying.

MeetPi · 11/02/2023 09:49

My FB is locked down but I post very rarely anyway. I very occasionally use it for interest groups. I deleted LinkedIn as I didn't find it useful; I've never found Instagram useful either; Pinterest is annoying; I've never used TikTok; but I do like Twitter (under a pseudonym).

How do all of you without social media find out about local events and interesting things happening in the area? I have moved areas twice in the past few years and it’s been an amazing way to figure out what’s happening in an area.

Newspapers , local magazines, notice boards , word of mouth etc. The same as before the internet existed!

Saltywalruss · 11/02/2023 10:07

faffadoodledo · 10/02/2023 22:04

You'd never find my 25 yo DiL on social media, yet she's there. She also works for a tech company. But uses an assumed name for SM. Maybe we could all learn a trick or two from her!

I am not sure if that makes a huge difference if you post photos and someone uses facial recognition to find you.

Saltywalruss · 11/02/2023 10:09

Obbydoo · 11/02/2023 09:00

MN is a forum. Not social media.

Userusing1 · 11/02/2023 10:14

Actually I have probably missed out on a whole lot of angst by never having a Facebook account, surely that is a good thing.

Userusing1 · 11/02/2023 10:15

Saltywalruss · 11/02/2023 10:09

MN is a forum. Not social media.

Yes, it comes in the same category as MSE forums, Digital Spy and stuff like that

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 11/02/2023 10:24

I have no social media, it's for people who want to brag or stalk others (as you've admitted in your post 😂).

I prefer it, rather be doing other things with my time.

LadyJ2023 · 11/02/2023 10:27

Hubby and I only have fbook early 30s prefer real life so I do lol and my fbook is mainly linked for games

gordonpym · 11/02/2023 00:23

Mumsnet is social media, so all of you saying you are not on social media are ill informed about what social media is.

Mumsnet is a forum, not social media. Just like Reddit and 4chan. Surely you can tell the difference? Confused

2bazookas · 11/02/2023 10:41

You're very naive. Just because you can't track them on social media doesn't mean they aren't there

Many people have private or professional good reason to protect and conceal their personal life and information from unwanted intrusion... and they do.

UserNameSameGame · 11/02/2023 10:44

I apologise, I was incorrect about the Facebook demographic. I took it at face value from a colleague but should have poked about under the bonnet more. The largest group of users is 25-34 year old males. However the most activity is from 45-54 year old females. Regardless, the trend demonstrated was that since the 2000s the same group has kept using it, and the underlying concern was that it not “fresh” any more. Young people are not coming onto it in large groups and growing it.
