To think The Fox and The Hound is the worst Disney movie

Even now more than 30ish years since I first watched this stupid film (I'm 40) I hate the ending with a passion that really should be invested in something more worthy.

DS has just sent me a "cute" tiktok of little Todd and Copper being all like always friends forever and no they bloody wont. Just listening the their stupid voices saying it has me back in tears. And to say that phrase at the end of the film as it fades away after Copper couldn't even apologise for being the worst friend in existence (a smile after stepping in front of a gun he knew would never shoot him whilst Todd fought an ACTUAL BEAR for him) bleugh.

I watch Disney for the happy endings. I know there is going to be something brutal at the beginning but the ending is supposed to resolve all the issues so they can live happily ever after. I appreciate they probably each happy individually but they are not always friends forever which was the whole point of the stupid movie.

Worst. Disney. Movie. Ever.

AIBU to think there is no way you can name a worse one?

I totally agree with you, I was traumatised by this film and will never let my kids see it!

WetBandits · 10/02/2023 14:22

I can’t watch it without crying! When Widow Tweed has to leave Todd alone in the woods 😭🥺 I’m actually tearing up even thinking about it so I doubt I’ll ever watch it again!

Copper grows up to be a proper arsehole. I feel like Dumbo and Pinocchio are worse, though. Totally traumatising!!

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 10/02/2023 14:45

I just looked it up to refresh my memory and apparently it's based on a book - in which animals die of rabies, Tod's cubs get GASSED, and Copper chases Tod until he dies of exhaustion?! wtaf

Somethingsnappy · 10/02/2023 14:46

I bloody loved this film, growing up. There are a couple of gritty, true-life lessons in there, whilst still having a tolerable ending. I would agree that the music is the worst Disney soundtrack ever though...

My DH agrees with you completely, I might add...

Picklypickles · 10/02/2023 14:53

I've seen it once, as an adult, I never want to watch it again.

Greensleeves · 10/02/2023 14:56

This film actually traumatised me as a child! I get a lump in my throat just thinking about it. It broke my heart. I didn't let my kids see it until they were teenagers Blush

BigMadAdrian · 10/02/2023 14:58

Dumbo is the worst - every bit of it is awful - the ostracisation and bullying, the separation from his mother, the treatment of the animals and the RACISM (faceless black men put up a tent...a crow called Jim Crow, massive stereotyping). I can't believe it's still shown to children tbh.

MelaniesFlowers · 10/02/2023 15:01

YABU. It’s one of my favourites.

mumonthehill · 10/02/2023 15:01

I cried and cried when i saw it!!!

Needmorelego · 10/02/2023 15:04

I loved it back in 1981 when I was 6. Had the story book, sticker album and all that.
But have never actually seen it since. I can't bring myself to watch it because I think I will be deeply disappointed with my memory 😂

Shitzngiggles · 10/02/2023 15:07

I've never seen The Fox and the Hound, but to me Dumbo has got to be the most god awful depressing kids film I've ever seen. Its just relentless misery the whole way through. I can't even remember how it ended, I just remember scene after scene of it just being so sad.

Needmorelego · 10/02/2023 15:08

@Shitzngiggles in my teenage diary when I was about 12 I had written the words "Dumbo was on telly. Rubbish the second time".

Prescottdanni123 · 10/02/2023 15:10

That film (while far from the best movie over all) has the best Disney moment ever. The trophy hunter stepping into his own trap.

Buffypaws · 10/02/2023 15:12

Ok so as a hard man I saw this thread and decided to stick it on having never seen it.

opening credits and I’m traumatised.

also why is this owl American? Is this not set in England?

WetBandits · 10/02/2023 15:13

@OP you fucker, I just watched the scene where Todd is left in the woods to see if it was as heartbreaking as I remembered.

Spoiler: it was, and I’m glad I’m WFH today because I cried my eyes out 😂😂

MissyB1 · 10/02/2023 15:14

Better than the sickly sweet later Disney films.

Strugglingtodomybest · 10/02/2023 15:14

My vote goes to Tarzan, simply for the Phil Collins soundtrack.

WetBandits · 10/02/2023 15:14

The most recent tearjerker Disney film I watched is Coco. Watched it with my DDad and we both sobbed the whole way through 😂

Buffypaws · 10/02/2023 15:15

Ok and the old woman is American. They hunt foxes in America??

megletthesecond · 10/02/2023 15:16

I don't remember it that much tbh. It can't be as bad as Dumbo or Pinocchio. They're both bleak with a horrible creepy undercurrent, never bothered to show my kids them.

HoldingTheDoor · 10/02/2023 15:20

Is it? I always thought it was set in the U.S. There's a bear in it after all.

Ok and the old woman is American. They hunt foxes in America??

They do.

FuckabethFuckor · 10/02/2023 15:22

What was that bonkers one about pigeons? Valiant or something. Dire.

Some of the 70s live-action ones were pretty ropey too. Watch Return From Witch Mountain if you want to see Bette Davis — yes, that Bette Davis — trashing her own legacy.

No, it’s set in the US. Most likely New England.

Eh?! The soundtrack is a masterpiece.
