If you're doing academic research, instead of paying to subscribe to journals, email the author of the paper you want directly. They will often give you the paper for free.

This is a good one.

Sometimes they also upload them to academia.edu.

@70isalimitnotatarget Agreed. Also, label all your chargers at the plug, straight out of the box. Fed up with holding on to so many old chargers as I don't know what they belong to or when I might need them.

I use Pocket to save articles to read later - often it works for paywalls but the big benefit for me is that it gets rid of all the advertising.

Thought we could do with a new bear tip, and found this. It may come in useful one day.

“The weakest part of a bear's skull is behind the face, in a small triangular shaped area roughly bounded by the eyes and the tip of the nose. A bullet striking this area has the greatest chance of penetrating the skull, hitting the brain and stopping the attack immediately.”

Not that most of us carry guns in the UK, but heh ho.

If I'm close enough to hit it (the bear, never mind the magic weak spot) I wouldn't have time to pull the trigger.

I'd just have to hope it was too disgusted by my evacuating my bowels to eat me 😁

This is excellent advice - all mother love it when people admire their babies!

Another way to make friends with bears is to paint your face with jam and let them lick it off.

Only Peruvian bears, @Florencenightingalewasfab - but to be fair they aren't fussy.

They'll happily bite your face off your head no matter what's slathered on it. They like hunny, too 🐻

Youngest DC came home from school today (infants was open, juniors was closed) and announced that they'd had a lesson about bears. She then showed me, with actions and sound effects, what to do if you yet attacked by a bear.

We live nowhere near any bear habitats.

She even recited the "if it's brown, lie down' rhyme from upthread.

Wondering if her teacher is a Mumsnetter....
