To Think We Should Still Be Wearing Masks

Especially seeing the news coming out of China, and the lies they seem to be telling about the Covid situation there.

I never stopped wearing a mask when shopping anyway, even though we were told it was no longer necessary.

Yes, I know that most people have now been vaccinated.

I think we should in hospitals, GP surgeries and other medical settings. I would also welcome things such as one-way systems in shops.

There should also be testing requirements from anyone coming from China.

BiasedBinding · 29/12/2022 07:34

I don’t have any opinion on other people wearing facemasks, never have had an opinion on that.

I don’t catch colds from the supermarket, I get them from my children and I’m not going to wear masks around them.

Mycatsgoldtooth · 29/12/2022 07:36

In China people have to wear masks nearly all the time, obviously they are stopping the spread there.

Bluesheep8 · 29/12/2022 08:07

I've been wearing one shopping as I'm immunocompromised
Just tested positive today

Wearing a mask protects others, not the wearer.

You'd think that message would have got through by now. The cloth and blue surgical masks which most of us wore were fairly pointless. The FFS masks are the ones which protect both wearer and others but they are even more uncomfortable and very expensive.

Will not be spending any more money on masks.

I updated further down
The FFP2 masks I wear protect me

But it was a relative that's given it to me on Christmas Day so it's not that my mask hasn't worked

bigknickersbigknockers · 29/12/2022 08:44

It always makes me laugh when people say where they caught covid, I think its very rare to be absolutely sure where you actually got it from. And as far as bringing masks back its a no from me. Mask wearing was the only rule I followed back when they were mandatory, but it will not happen again.

Jourdain11 · 29/12/2022 08:45

A bit tangential, but I don't get why people think that one way systems in supermarkets help. All it does is make you spend twice as long in the supermarket, so therefore breathing over twice as many people!

FrostyFifi · 29/12/2022 08:47

That was literally one of the most pointless idiocies of the whole foolish time. It must have prevented the sum total of zero infections.

I'm not interested in having my behaviour micro managed ever again thanks.

No thanks

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 29/12/2022 08:50

Part of good public health is everyone doing their bit when needed

I've done my bit, thanks. March 2020-July 2021 at which point I considered enough was enough.

Not true.

I’ve gone back to wearing a mask in cold, damp crowded shops since winter set in and the covid and flu figures in my town went through the roof.

I have reduced lung function due to an infection I caught 12 years ago, decided two doses of the vaccine were enough and am too old care what anyone thinks of my decision to wear a mask in certain situations, although surprisingly about 50% of staff and shoppers in M&S were wearing them today. I think there is generally a higher ‘tolerance’ for mask wearing in Scotland compared to England.

I haven’t had covid and don’t want to for as long as possible (I do know that its inevitable at some point)

I'm in Scotland too but disagree there was more tolerance for mask wearing here. I haven't seen many wearing masks when out and about.

And given we had to wear them longer here and our numbers were higher than England once England had stopped wearing them I think it proved mask mandates were not a particularly effective way to stop transmission.

givethistokevin · 29/12/2022 09:06

I have seen more masks than usual in Scotland, but I have also seen a lot more people. It's December and shops have been rammed. I think it's all relative.

Yes! Only 37 million infections in one day.

Half of all the population of Shanghai infected in a 2-3 week period.

Teateaandmoretea · 29/12/2022 09:17

Yabu and totally ridiculous.

The situation in China is a direct result of these ridiculous virus avoidance policies. They’ve managed to save their wave for a variant that the vaccines basically don’t work for. Slow hand clap.

The solution = more of the daft policies.

PMSL at reintroducing one way systems in supermarkets. Covid knows which way you’re walking don’t ya know 🤡

PortiasBiscuit · 29/12/2022 09:21

One has to understand the difference between “having some control” and “ feeling like one might have some control”.

I agree the one way system in shops was just ridiculous and did nothing to stop virus' spreading. All it did was make some feel safer.

That, and the general reluctance to vaccinate. Can't quite think why the population wouldn't trust the government there.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 28/12/2022 23:34

Given that masks are there to protect people from what you're breathing out rather than in, it makes me feel I want to give mask wearers a wide berth as it makes me wonder if they've got the virus

This is what I keep thinking too.

And people just ended up walking in any direction anyway when they realised they missed something down a asisle or didn't want to go round the entire store. Was silly! Never saw everyone going in one direction not round here anyway.

MeetPi · 29/12/2022 09:25

@JangolinaPitt

I do judge people who still cling to wearing masks - utterly ridiculous.

Do you even know why they even wearing a mask? How can you possibly be judgemental when you don't know?

These threads really do bring out the idiotic in people. It's like some kind of competition.

Beezknees · 29/12/2022 09:30

YABU. They make little difference unless done alongside other restrictions.

WafflesOrIceCream · 29/12/2022 09:31

I wore masks...so did my DH and DD.I used to be extra careful with my shopping removing the outer packing before putting them away.
We all caught covid twice! Even when we were told to stop wearing masks, I wore one.

Now I don't bother wearing it because even after being so careful I caught it twice!

One often sees posters on MN who are certain they caught covid from someone doing something they personally disapprove of. They never seem to attribute it to asymptomatic transmission, there's always a moral dimension.
