Woman arrested in Birmingham for praying outside abortion clinic

How on earth can someone be arrested for silently praying?

Is there more to the story perhaps that is not being reported because if not I find this ridiculous and scary - what is the world coming to?

We can get arrested for our thoughts WTAF. Whether you agree or not with abortion this is just wrong.

Where is the OP?
I hope you feel you can understand the issues better now 👍

Here 👋 yes that's never knew anything about exclusion zones - perhaps the news should be unbiased reporting as vastly misleading

Your source of news was Fox News…did you honestly think it was reliable?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 26/12/2022 11:00

If she had genuinely been silent, no one could have known she was praying, surely.

MavisMcMinty · 26/12/2022 11:01

It’s Fox News, @bagthoughts . FOX NEWS. Any truth in their reports is only ever incidental and/or accidental.

Loics · 26/12/2022 11:02

I am not at all religious, but I would say very unfair and worrying if there was no exclusion zone, or if it wasn't legally enforceable. Since it was, she knew she was braking the law so will have to stay further back next time or face the consequences again.

VisaGeezer · 26/12/2022 11:02

Exclusion zones .... And the intense disappointment many posters here felt when their MPs voted against them, was discussed more than once in here.

You start threads on Mumsnet about contraversial subjects but somehow don't read threads about them.

You should have read a tiny bit around the subject before posting a thread claiming something as mental as that someone is being arrested for their thoughts.

FlorettaB · 26/12/2022 11:03

’I find this ridiculous and scary - what is the world coming to?’
’it's clearly inaccurate and biased reporting’

That’s what Fox ‘News’ does. It tells stories that stoke fear and anger in its viewers.

She is known by the residents in the area, as it's not first time she has protested there.

The thing is a quick google, would have told you this was bullshit, its in the news at the moment that twitter have had to put a correction up on the tweet after it went viral

Wtf would I research other threads first?! Don't be ridiculous

@bagthoughts you won’t find any sympathy for your perspective on Mumsnet sadly.
From what I understand the clinic was closed and she was praying silently and also got distracted thinking about her lunch. So a mixture of lawful and unlawful activities in that areas.
The bigger issue is that we have got to the point where silently praying in the street is considered by some a harassment. That’s a pretty low bar. And it has implications for other protests in the Uk. But people don’t seem to care about this.
Personally I don’t agree with abortion. For a variety of reasons.
I’m also concerned about the erosion of rights to protest - especially silent thought protests.
As an aside Isabel has done a lot of good work to help women who want to keep their babies but feel unable to. But of course this is less important than her silently standing in a road.

Utter pile of crap

Ah, just trolling for attention then? Fox News, FFS. Fox News!

keepaweatheredeye · 26/12/2022 11:06

Bore off, OP.

And educate yourself before asking stupid questions.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 26/12/2022 11:00

She was asked by the police if she was praying. That required an answer.

purpledalmation · 26/12/2022 11:09

That's a Fox News item. Fox News is extremely right wing (supports Trump and the overturning of abortion rights in America). His interview concentrated on the right to pray and focused on that to the exclusion of reasoned and balanced debate (the rights of the patients). The Protected Public Space law was mentioned (exclusion zone) but slanted as something to protects against drunks and dog fouling. This woman was a repeat offender and she is clearly someone who want to be a martyr to her cause. A bit like the Naked Rambler, and be imprisoned multiple times. A vile one sided, slanted and disgraceful news item by a corrupt News agency.

purpledalmation · 26/12/2022 11:10

OP should try educating herself.

SellFridges · 26/12/2022 11:11

The exclusion zone is very new indeed (and should have been larger but an objection was raised by the Catholic Church apparently), and we have fought for it for a long time. The individual concerned (and her many, many mates - mostly male and over 50) are not welcome yet they continue to harass clinic users and local residents. Until this autumn they were allowed to stand outside the clinic, approaching and harassing women and their families as they attempted to access vital services. At best they antagonised locals, at worst they harassed them too.

The best thing anyone can do to stop this behaviour is ask your MP’s and local police to introduce, enforce and maintain exclusion zones where necessary. I am thrilled to see that she has been arrested for breaching it. It sends an important message.

YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot · 26/12/2022 11:11

It's quite simple op. She prayed to Jesus and Jesus, who is all about love and compassion to despite being the son of a sadistic abuser.
So Jesus said, nahhhh and used his powers to send the police and lock her up. Not in my name he said. God allowed it because God moves in mysterious ways and all that.

Or she broke the law knowingly and got arrested for it.

Pick your adventure op. And learn to use your critical thinking skills a bit. Wwjd?

It's not nicknamed Faux News for nothing...

FantaFour · 26/12/2022 11:12

bagthoughts · 26/12/2022 10:49

Oh for Christ sakes - what I think now is I know nothing about abortion exclusion zones so why on earth would I see this as an issue. Rightly as another poster mention it's clearly inaccurate and biased reporting that noone mentioned breaking exclusion zones

So why are you still so rude once you were educated here?

VisaGeezer · 26/12/2022 11:15

FantaFour · 26/12/2022 11:12

She shouldn't have to have been educated here, a simple Google search ; and reading an article from a bit right wing US news group .. would have given information on the subject .

Also very strange that she'd go to the extent of posting on MN about such a controversial subject but has somehow missed the threads on here about exclusion zones.

VisaGeezer · 26/12/2022 11:15

*from a not right wing news group

If it's factual news you're looking for, give Fox a swerve @bagthoughts.😂😂😂
