Woman arrested in Birmingham for praying outside abortion clinic

How on earth can someone be arrested for silently praying?

Is there more to the story perhaps that is not being reported because if not I find this ridiculous and scary - what is the world coming to?

We can get arrested for our thoughts WTAF. Whether you agree or not with abortion this is just wrong.

Gosh, just watched the Fox news clip. What a nasty, judgemental woman she is. Typical religious zealot who believes her beliefs trump everyone else's and make her above the law - for me she epitomises everything that is wrong with religion.

And as for the Fox News reporting, which spectacularly misses the point that she was arrested for being in the exclusion zone rather than for the silent praying....the mind boggles!

Delorestormborn · 26/12/2022 10:41

Good. If she wants to pray there are plenty of places she can go and pray in.

Blanketpolicy · 26/12/2022 10:42

On the fox news video even she says she was silently praying and offering women help.

That is protesting against abortion outside a clinic and against the law.

Proudofitbabe · 26/12/2022 10:43

Good. She was just being provocative. There's nothing godly about these zealots.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/12/2022 10:43

I imagine Fox News has reported because of the overturn of Roe v Wade and the overall slow creep of the erosion of womens rights that is being pushed all round at the moment. It's a dog whistle to evangelical Christians to "fight the good fight" 🙄 and possibly support / fund further disruption.

Nothing more terrifying than a religious extremist with money to burn.....

Where is the OP?
I hope you feel you can understand the issues better now 👍

The OP isn't interested, they just wanted to share a Fox News disinformation link.

Jingleoverthatway · 26/12/2022 10:43

Great - delighted to see police using the law to help protect vulnerable women in this situation.

IrisCosyCottage · 26/12/2022 10:44

The UK police have asked people about their thoughts eg when questioning people around sex, gender, potential 'hate' incidents.
But this case isn't about policing thoughts. It's basic breaching of an exclusion zone.

Namrchangedforthis · 26/12/2022 10:46

What a despicable woman, and as someone who had a termination a few years ago I would have known/felt intimidated by a woman ‘silently praying’ as I was going in.
I was extremely grateful to the wonderful, caring and judgement free staff at that clinic, they also need to be free to work without harassment which is what this is

Blondlashes · 26/12/2022 10:47

@bagthoughts you won’t find any sympathy for your perspective on Mumsnet sadly.
From what I understand the clinic was closed and she was praying silently and also got distracted thinking about her lunch. So a mixture of lawful and unlawful activities in that areas.
The bigger issue is that we have got to the point where silently praying in the street is considered by some a harassment. That’s a pretty low bar. And it has implications for other protests in the Uk. But people don’t seem to care about this.
Personally I don’t agree with abortion. For a variety of reasons.
I’m also concerned about the erosion of rights to protest - especially silent thought protests.
As an aside Isabel has done a lot of good work to help women who want to keep their babies but feel unable to. But of course this is less important than her silently standing in a road.

AuntieMarys · 26/12/2022 10:48

Attention seeking woman.

bagthoughts · 26/12/2022 10:49

Tigofigo · 26/12/2022 10:28

Would love to know what OP thinks now?

Oh for Christ sakes - what I think now is I know nothing about abortion exclusion zones so why on earth would I see this as an issue. Rightly as another poster mention it's clearly inaccurate and biased reporting that noone mentioned breaking exclusion zones

OP posts:
Strugglingtodomybest · 26/12/2022 10:50

Good. I'm glad she's been arrested, she thinks it's ok to cause distress to women who may already be very distressed. Selfish.

catmothertes1 · 26/12/2022 10:50

BadgerButty · 26/12/2022 10:22

There is more to this story. History of intimidation against women visiting the clinic. Something called a PSPO in place which was breached. Hence the arrest. But that doesn’t make as ‘juicy’ a headline as ‘woman arrested for praying’. It’s lazy sensationalist reporting

The video posted by OP seems to be from Fox News. I think that tells you a lot!

No shit 😂

The fact you're pretending this woman wasn't making an obvious protest, makes that very clear.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/12/2022 10:51

If she had just been praying silently and not ostentatiously how would anyone have known what she was doing? The mental gymnastics to justify her breach of the law are breathtaking.

It's not sad, it's good that mumsnet users overwhelmingly care more about women's rights to access abortion safely and without intimidation/guilt tripping/interference from religious people. Stay out of other women's bodies.

ladygindiva · 26/12/2022 10:52

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 26/12/2022 10:20

A lot of clinics have a legally enforced exclusion zone around them of x amount of metres. This is to stop pro lifers from hassling women.

It is right she was arrested for breaking the exclusion zone. You can't tell us she wasn't there as a pro lifer and doing it to cause distress to women. There are plenty of other places she can pray.

Yup this absolutely.

Penguinsaregreat · 26/12/2022 10:56

She broke a legal restriction.
Maybe she should concentrate on doing something pro active such as helping the thousands of orphaned children. Or the homeless. Or all the children in care. Maybe should should go and visit those children and do activities with them, or take them food and gifts. Off the top of my head I can think of many, many positive and helpful things she could do. Doesn’t sound like that kind of person though.

purpledalmation · 26/12/2022 10:56

About time too. People like her are making the lives of women facing difficult decisions even more difficult. They don't need to be anywhere near the clinics. They don't need to be visible. They can pray in their homes. They are a bloody disgrace.

No one disputes they have the right to their views, but they don't have the right to upset others.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/12/2022 10:57

I suspect if it was necessary to pray near your subject matter then there would be a lot more religious action near the lottery kiosk.

JustAnotherManicNameChange · 26/12/2022 10:57

She broke the law. A law intended to protect women and staff working at these clinics.

The spin put on by Fox news does not change the facts.

Isobel is that you?

She's a vile harrasing nasty woman she isn't nice she has her agenda and has past history at this clinic, the person who reported her will has recognised her from previous protests as residents in the area don't want these idiots there either.

This is why its always advisable to check the facts before you make comment. I can see why this post would have ruffled a few feathers on an online forum mostly used by woman.

DiddyHeck · 26/12/2022 10:24

Good.

Let's not pretend she wasn't 'making a point' by standing there in front of the clinic.

If she wanted to pray for anyone there, she could've done it at home 🙄

Totally agree. Disgusting woman passively aggressively harassing women outside an abortion clinic. Shame on her.
