To think Purple Rain is over rated

I heard it for the first time today after hearing it referenced in pop culture forever.

My god I was disappointed 😞.

What is so special about it?

YABVU.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 25/12/2022 12:06

YABVU!

jetadore · 25/12/2022 12:07

YABU. It may not be to your taste but you don’t need to like it for it to rightly be considered an absolute, nailed on, 24 carat solid gold classic.

2DemisSVP · 25/12/2022 12:07

I think songs like this change how music is made and inspire so much that follows them , but unless you were listening at the time, you can’t fully appreciate because you don’t see the changes …

BedTaker · 25/12/2022 12:07

YABU

Edgarj7674 · 25/12/2022 12:07

Guitar solo.

if you heard the edited version without the full solo you missed the best bit. Prince = genius

VladmirsPoutine · 25/12/2022 12:10

It's subjective so you can think whatever you want about it. I think madonna and lady gaga are far too over-rated.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 25/12/2022 12:11

Looking at the best ofs that year, we were spoiled.

Then again we also had Aga-bloody- doo!

VioletLemon · 25/12/2022 12:11

Prince was probably the most gifted musical genius to walk the earth. His catalogue is beyond great! YABVU. Try listening to his early stuff too and remember he plays every instrument on most of the tracks, as well as writing, arranging and producing. Epic.

DifferentYearSameShit · 25/12/2022 12:12

It's Prince - I personally before When Doves cry - An ocean of violets in bloom - absolute genius

Shesasuperfreak · 25/12/2022 12:12

I like his other records but I dont think Purple Rain lives up to the hype. I was waiting for something to drop and it was flat.

I thought nothing of it until I heard a couple of teenagers cover it in a pub. It was amazing live. I was very pleased when they asked for requests at the end of their gig and someone else asked them to do it again.

OliverBabish · 25/12/2022 12:20

whispers

I agree

paisley256 · 25/12/2022 12:20

The heart wrenching lyrics, the raw passion in his voice as the song builds, the beautiful melody and killer guitar solo.... yeah what a disappointment. Yabvvvu.

gingercat02 · 25/12/2022 12:24

Don't be daft YABVVVVVU!

OppositeNumber · 25/12/2022 12:33

How very dare you

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 25/12/2022 12:37

Something to drop?

A rock, gospel and orchestral power ballad that ends in not one but 2 solo breaks.

What did you miss?

funnystuff123 · 25/12/2022 12:38

YABVU!
Back in the nineties I was lucky enough to hear Prince play this live in concert as the sun was setting. It was magical. Prince was a genius.

Mmm! Yes. But for me the whole loud, pleading, biblical/multi religion sound peaks with 7. Something about the clarity of the finger cymbals gets me every time.

PuppyMonkey · 25/12/2022 12:40

As a person only hearing this song for the first time today, I doubt you are a world leading authority on music tbf.Grin

butterfliedtwo · 25/12/2022 12:41

It's amazing. You are so unreasonable.

holierthanthou73 · 25/12/2022 12:47

What! I adore Prince! He was a one off, never has there been or will be again someone so talented. He was a beautiful soul. OP out of interest what age range are you and what do you normally listen to?

Not my favourite either OP, I appreciate he’s very talented but Prince just isn’t my taste, my husband loves him and likes to ply all his tunes very loudly at all times!

paisley256 · 25/12/2022 12:53

I was also lucky enough to have experienced Prince perform this song live on atleast 10 occaisions. Each performance was unique but they were all truly mindblowing.
