To think Purple Rain is over rated

I heard it for the first time today after hearing it referenced in pop culture forever.

My god I was disappointed 😞.

What is so special about it?

I'm a big Prince fan but must admit its not my favourite. Sign O the Times is way better. He was freaking awesome.

The whole album is 10/10 for me. Oh the memories, feel in love to that album way back in the day and it’s still just as brilliant now as it was then. Purple Rain makes me cry these days for a million reasons, some happy, some sad but it’s a beautiful and powerful masterpiece in my opinion. 💜🌧️❤️

Prince is massively overrated generally. Just dire unintelligent music for people who think they're it.

Someone once asked Eric Clapton how it felt to be the world’s greatest guitarist. He said, “I don’t know, ask Prince.”

Guess you’re including Clapton in that then?

I get it. For some being cloth eared, denigrating something they don't understand or like is self affirming.

But even if you don't enjoy his work, or any other obvious talent's music, comments like that rebound. Make you seem bereft if sense, self awareness.

I’m not a huge Prince fan but all his hits were out when I was a teenager so I danced to them/listened to them.

My best friend (classically trained opera singer, doesn’t perform) is a huge Prince fan, has seen him live and plays certain tracks when she needs a pep talk so if she rates him then I trust her judgment!

I LOVE Prince, been a fan since 1979. He was a musical genius, but I think this song is a bit of a dirge tbh. AND it never got to No 1, the only one that managed that was Most Beautiful Girl in the World. There are at least ten songs of his that are better than this IMO!

He was a talented song writer and could play a multitude of musical instruments. I thought most of his music was bland.

Harry Styles is overrated. Ed Sheehan is overrated. Prince however - nuh uh. You could try to be more wrong but you would fail.

If must strike a cord with some people and with others...nothing. like I said I like his other records and can appreciate he was very talented. But this song is not worth youtubers tears, its just alright.

Yanbu. I grew up when Prince was really popular and I never really got it. Boring, bland music by someone who felt like they were trying too hard. Not my thing at all. But then thank goodness we all like different things, the world would be boring if we didn’t.

YANBU, completely overrated song

Loved the cast of Color purple doing purple rain tribute when he died. The song in full vocal range ability even with Jennifer Hudson getting too emotional.

Prince made some dross (DH would disagree, he's a superfan who saw him 10 times), but most of his stuff it bloody incredible. Gifted doesn't even come close to describing him; he played every one of his own instruments on his first few albums (until the revolution), he can both elate you and make you cry within 5 minutes on that album, and generally. Music taste is very personal, but surely you can objectively see that it is the work of a genius.

Shit actor though (although Purple Rain the movie is a guilty pleasure of mine).
