To think Purple Rain is over rated

I heard it for the first time today after hearing it referenced in pop culture forever.

My god I was disappointed 😞.

What is so special about it?

Just to show how versatile he was, and how much he changed his style in just a few short years, this is his song, Annie Christian, in his electronic period in 81/82 when he was influenced by artists like Gary Numan. It hardly sounds like the same artist! As pp above said, Purple Rain was a conscious decision to reach a bigger, more mainstream audience.

I adore Purple Rain as I said already, but for me his best songs are the hidden little gems that didn't get any airplay. Ana stesia from Lovesexy and The question of u and Joy in repetition from Graffiti Bridge are truly sublime. The live versions are so intense I just don't think anyone captured the pain and suffering caused by love the way Prince did.

This is how I saw it.
Googling Jessie J and watching her on the Chinese singing contest then seeing her perform purple rain.
I thought hmmm maybe the original is better as I have seen it mentioned so many times in pop culture. It was better but still over hyped

He played his own instruments. Wrote his own songs. The man was a lyrical genius. I saw him live and loved every second of his gig. He oozed magnificence. Bloody fabulous man!
