My son wants cellotape for xmas

My 9 yr old son loves cello-tape ( and staplers, scissors) and makes ‘ models’ from our junk waste. I have saved some interesting junk waste and bought some patterned cellotape and a staple free stapler ( packaged into a gift box) for a Xmas. My husband thinks this is (pun) a rubbish gift. AIBU to give him cellotape and junk because he will love it ( he has other larger gifts)

Can you share some of his creations?

Grantanow · 18/12/2022 09:38

He sounds very creative - to be encouraged!

itsgettingweird · 18/12/2022 09:38

At a similar age I got my ds a large box with smaller boxes packed inside and inside the smaller east celloptape and paint etc.

He was also a fan of making box models etc and he made a train and carriage from that set.

Added bonus that it kept him busy the rest of the holidays Grin

Once, not around Christmas, I wanted to make little notebooks and asked my dad if I could borrow the stapler from his desk. He said yes and the next day brought me a brand new stapler, a really nice one, so I could have my own. It was better than his. I had lots of great presents in my life but it's one of the ones I really remember and it still makes me smile 20+ years later.

DSD asked for a jar of pickled gherkins one year. She was 8 years old and had tried them for the 1st time at my parents house and loved them. DD wasn't keen on them so we got DSD 4 jars of the things which she was absolutely delighted with. It became a bit of a tradition every year after that....there was always at least 1 jar of them wrapped up and under the tree.

AclowncalledAlice · 18/12/2022 10:36

posted too soon

A reel of cellotape seems very reasonable compared to that.

willingtolearn · 18/12/2022 11:19

Introduce him to duck tape and masking tape as well. Duck tape can make flexible hinges for his models and masking tape you can write on/draw on.

X-post! Sounds like my DD isn't the only one Grin

😂
Clearly our DDs have good taste!
My DD is 22 now and when we talk of it, she still insists it was one of her best presents ever and sees nothing odd about it!!

mamabear715 · 18/12/2022 12:58

Why not? Eldest DD had similar years ago. The boys have had a bag of nails.. most went into my coffee table, lol.. and a loaf.
Oh & feather dusters. ;-)

Hankunamatata · 18/12/2022 13:15

Hobbycraft do a vast array of different coloured duck tape. I was so tempted.

OodieBoogie · 18/12/2022 13:38

Op have you heard of makedo cardboard tools?

I think you can get them on amazon too.

Basically a tool set for junk modelling (including screws, screw driver and a tool which makes it easier to bend cardboard without breaking it)

A heavy bottomed dispenser would be good if you don't have one?

I think it's great, personal gift. Dd once asked for a roll of bubble wrap and was DELIGHTED with it.

DD got a box of bubble wrap from Rudolph one year.

TofuonToast · 18/12/2022 13:56

Wait.. it’s Sellotape right!

GG1986 · 18/12/2022 14:15

My daughter loves cellotape!! Buy him a multipack, he will love it 😀

ofwarren · 18/12/2022 14:19

My son has a load of paper, washi tape and a pack of pritt sticks.
He loves stuff like that.

jackstini · 18/12/2022 14:27

YANBU - these are the most fun presents and will be remembered Grin

Over the years mine have requested and been given:

Frozen peas
Spam
Loo roll with pictures on
A whole Edam
Halloumi
A nose hair trimmer (ds was 11!)
Mop slippers

Notplayingball · 18/12/2022 14:29

Why not?🤷one of my DC loves post it notes and other crafting materials so I bought some for his birthday present when he turned 7 earlier this year.

Thelnebriati · 18/12/2022 14:31

Some of DS's best presents were fun, inexpensive things like a whole roll of bubble wrap or wallpaper, and a whole ream of A4 office paper.

My son loves blutac to put stuff on his walls so thats in his stocking

Rockingcloggs · 18/12/2022 14:34

My son had a massive box once filled with pound shop stationary one Christmas! Cello tape, stapler, pens, pencils, sharpeners, a rubber band ball - absolutely all sorts of stuff! He absolutely loved it! Now, we do go all out for Christmas but each year this is one of the pressies he looks forward to most! In fact, I did my poundshop stationary run this very morning!

I had to stop getting my son blutac for Christmas and birthdays because it ended up EVERYWHERE!!

Rocketpants50 · 18/12/2022 14:37

Get him to check out Darrell Wakelam he makes some amazing creations from cardboard and tape. Has lots of tutorials on his website as well, which are great.
We have a large drawer of making stuff including dowels, glue gun, tape, batteries and wires and a shed full of cardboard.

Think the fact he wants sellotape for Christmas is brilliant.

RosyPie6 · 18/12/2022 14:38

I've bought my daughter blue tack 😂 she loves it so why not get them something they enjoy

twocatsandtwokids · 18/12/2022 14:57

My 9 year old loves stationery and often asks for bluetac etc for Christmas! He and my DD both love crafting. Definitely get it for him!!!

lionsandwhales · 18/12/2022 16:29

quiteoldad · 18/12/2022 00:27

If he's really into modelmaking, get him a hot melt glue gun and some glue sticks. I picked up both of these for a fiver. From Poundland... I think.

Ooh! Glue gun could be good!
