My son wants cellotape for xmas

My 9 yr old son loves cello-tape ( and staplers, scissors) and makes ‘ models’ from our junk waste. I have saved some interesting junk waste and bought some patterned cellotape and a staple free stapler ( packaged into a gift box) for a Xmas. My husband thinks this is (pun) a rubbish gift. AIBU to give him cellotape and junk because he will love it ( he has other larger gifts)

If he's into crafting with the recycling, how about a glue gun as well? DD can spend hours creating stuff with that, and much prefers it to tape. Uhu do a low temp one but at 9 he'd probably be ok with a proper one. Just set some clear rules about when, where and turning it off!

Not really the same but you can get Velcro dots too

And glue dots - fun for craft! What's a staple free stapler OP? Surely a stapler with actual staples would be more effective/fun?!

Sellotape is dreadful for the environment, op.
We've started buying this

It's great and completely recyclable

Ocrumbs · 18/12/2022 06:41

This is the stuff memories are made of

BoffinMum · 18/12/2022 06:59

DS1 asked for four shiny pencils one Xmas and he got them.

impossiblerequest · 18/12/2022 07:35

It sounds great.

I got mine sellotape last year (on mini dispensers) and they’re getting blu tack this year!

WhatInFreshHell · 18/12/2022 07:56

Brilliant gift in my opinion! Maybe add in some glue dots? He'll be so happy on Christmas morning Smile Bless him.

Ricco12 · 18/12/2022 08:13

My son gets a multipack of cello tape every year for last 3 years. He loves the stuff.

He is 8

CoodleMoodle · 18/12/2022 08:33

DD still talks about the time she got BluTac in her stocking! She'd asked for it specifically and was delighted that Santa remembered.

Go for it OP, he'll be delighted I'm sure!

AngelinaFibres · 18/12/2022 09:03

As he is 9 you could get him a hot glue gun too. Now that's a game changer for model making . Absolutely love mine ❤

If he's really into modelmaking, get him a hot melt glue gun and some glue sticks. I picked up both of these for a fiver. From Poundland... I think.

Yes, a glue gun can really upgrade junk modelling! Or if you are not confident of his ability to be safe with this, find some decent glue- I like Copydex.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 18/12/2022 09:09

I wouldn't include junk into the present, but otherwise it's a brilliant present. One present I still remember getting from my parents was craft knife. I loved it.

Maybe you can add extra art stuff that can be useful when junk modelling. like glugun, etc.

Pottedpalm · 18/12/2022 09:14

Sounds great! I got DS a large shoebox full of lengths of cord, rope, a piece of chain… He still says it was one of the best presents ever.

Heartstopper · 18/12/2022 09:15

In my 70s childhood it was quite normal to receive little bits like staplers, hole punches, etc as part of the stocking gifts. I dont recall receiving sellotape as such but that doesnt mean it didnt happen. You can get so many great sticky tapes these days, reels with motifs on, etc. Great present idea for the child who likes crafts and modeling.

Rainallnight · 18/12/2022 09:17

My DD is obsessed with my cello tape dispenser so she’s getting none in her stocking! 😂

Rainallnight · 18/12/2022 09:17

One! Not none

Newmum738 · 18/12/2022 09:18

Sounds great. Give it to him!

Newwardrobe · 18/12/2022 09:21

I was a massive Blue Peter fan and was always making things out of scraps of material or cardboard boxes. My best Christmas present ever was a big roll of sticky backed plastic , coloured card and sellotape.

VioletLemon · 18/12/2022 09:23

Fabulous, encourage his developing creative, engineering skills. He might enjoy learning new ways to create joins, as well as sellotape, brilliant idea you got different types. Paper hole punchers are cool too. What a creative brain!

Georgiesgirl · 18/12/2022 09:23

When I was little I bought my dad sellotape for Christmas as I thought it was so great Smile

piedbeauty · 18/12/2022 09:26

It's a great gift. He will love it!

Talipesmum · 18/12/2022 09:26

Yup, great gift, we did the same one year with similar sounding child and he loved it. Def have a dispenser and a hot glue gun is a good addition. Also duck tape (normal or in bright colours). Sticks things much better than sellotape. Hobby craft sell loads.

Great present, make sure you buy him a heavy weight sellotape dispenser, it makes life so much easier. I have one for small reels and one for large reels which cuts the tape into small lengths , perfect for present wrapping, maybe not so good for model making, though small lengths are good for holding something in place………

viques · 18/12/2022 09:31

Another good present for a model maker would be a cutting board or mat, would save surfaces and be safer for cutting too.

Ariela · 18/12/2022 09:33

One of my best presents as a child was a large bottle of PVA glue (about 2 litres worth). Lasted forever. Sometimes I had to take the lid off and poke about with a pencil to remove a surface skin of glue so it would come out.
