Is Playmobil too young for a 7yo?

DC aged 7, School Year 3 has asked for playmobil set for Christmas, they the adventure zoo set.

They have some fine motor delays, and struggle with Lego so I tend to buy Duplo. They’re having OT and Physio input but it won’t be until March. But they absolutely love small world play, they set it up in the hallway and play for hours with the little playmobil people plus small dolls and figures.

My friends with similar age DC seem to think they're a bit old to get playmobil.

So AIBU to buy playmobil or will they be laughed at at school?

I bought my then 16 year old a small Wild West set from Santa. He was still arranging scenes with the existing Playmobil he had. I'm not even sure that he cleared it away when friends came over!

So no, pretty much never too old if it's something you enjoy.

templesit · 03/12/2022 23:33

I'd take age out of the situation and ask yourself 'will this toy be played with?'
If the answer is yes then go for it.

Kids have great imaginations and the same toy / set of toys can be played with for years- it's just played with differently as they grow.

Before long kids don't want toys so I'm a believer in promote toys for as long as possible!

Bronzeisthecolour · 03/12/2022 23:33

My dd 8 at time got the zoo last Christmas !

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/12/2022 23:35

I think 7 is a great age for it. As pps have said, they don’t really appreciate all the little bits and pieces until they’re that age

BadgerLovesMash · 03/12/2022 23:43

I'm really shocked at some of the answers on this thread! 7 is perfect playmobil age, they are able to make up elaborate stories then. I would 100% buy it if he has asked for it and would play with it.

At 6/7 my dd asked for a paw patrol toy she didn't have, no questions I bought it for her. She doesn't have any delays just really loved paw patrol. She is now 10 and will still watch the film and odd episode.

I think people need to let kids be kids, it's crazy to think of a 7 year old being too old for a certain toy! My eldest is 14, she wanted a few soft toys and lalaloopsy dolls for her birthday and was over the moon with them.

DixonD · 03/12/2022 23:45

If they play with it, and will love it (they’ve asked for it!), then they are not too old. Who cares what other parents think.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 03/12/2022 23:50

It’s a great age for it! Sure some children will have grown out of it by that time (especially if they’ve had it for years) but many others will happily play with it for quite a bit longer.

Here are a couple of timely threads for you to have a peek at for inspiration and to see how many years of happiness he (and maybe you!) might get out of it:

Advent in Playmoland

Playmobil hospital

Ah sorry for some reason I thought you’d said it was a DS.

If he or she loves small world play and has asked for this set then definitely get it for them! Imaginative play is still really important at that age.

SoMuchToBits · 04/12/2022 09:40

My ds played with his Playmobil up until early teens. And the Playmobil boxes usually say age 4-10 on them. So I would say it's perfect for age 7.

Really good for kids that age to play with toys like this. I find it quite sad that so many children don't play with toys any more. Although I still have fun making scenes with ds's Playmobil as an adult! Xmas Wink

BuyThePlaymobil · 04/12/2022 09:42

Thank you everyone set ordered!

@AgathaMystery if you’re selling I’d love to hear what you’ve got, my 3 year old is just starting to get into playmobil so it will be most of our Christmas plan 😂

Tuichi · 04/12/2022 09:47

i loved playmobil as a child and 7 was a great age for it. If 7 was too old, there’d be a very small window for playing with it at all since the many tiny little parts (my mum still remembers finding feathers from a Wild West set all over the house) aren’t suitable for very young children.

Gooseysgirl · 04/12/2022 09:49

My almost 11 year old is still playing with hers, but probably not for much longer. I won't be sorry to see it go... it's fiddly and annoying, and we have far too much of it! BUT it has been a fantastic toy for her and she has played with it loads over the years!

Choconut · 04/12/2022 09:51

Well done OP, don't let the cool mums whose 7 year olds are probably into SM and playing GTA make you think there is anything wrong with a 7 year old playing with playmobil. Some people are very keen for their kids to grow up quickly and it often doesn't end well. Let him decide when he's not in playmobil any more, not some random women - and if anyone laughs at him then they are the ones with the issue not him.

AmyandPhilipfan · 04/12/2022 09:53

Too old at 7?! Definitely not! My daughter is 5 and a half and I've bought her a Playmobil advent calendar and nativity set this year as I thought she was only old enough this year to deal with the little pieces. She loves it and I hope she'll have a good few years of collecting and playing yet.

Mardyface · 04/12/2022 10:33

There is an adult on here who creates Playmobil stories and posts the photos! And it's v entertaining. So 7 isn't too old.

I bought my kids lots of Playmobil but I think I liked it more than they did tbh.

HerbErtlinger · 04/12/2022 10:39

My 5 yr old DS is getting 3 sets of playmobil for Christmas and I know he's going to love them, I hope for many years use for them

SoMuchToBits · 04/12/2022 11:16

@Mardyface that's me! Xmas Grin

Fluffybuns · 04/12/2022 11:16

I love Playmobil, wish my DC were still into it. Its a fun present for Xmas day - the big boxes are quite "wow". I enjoy putting it together.

We had lots of the secret agent and police sets and like other posters older kids visiting/cousins will still have a play.

Hope DC has fun OP.

Stressedmummyof4 · 04/12/2022 11:26

My 10 year old DD still loves playmobil in fact Santa has her some this year too!

Mardyface · 04/12/2022 11:30

Love your work @SoMuchToBits! I'm a fan. Will we get a coronation next year?!

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 04/12/2022 11:31

I would definitely have bought it at 7. The sets are really detailed esp. things like the hospital, so as they get older they start to use the smaller parts. My 11 & 8 year olds still play occasionally, mostly when other children are here.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 04/12/2022 11:32

They now also use the sets to make stop motion films. 🙂

Coconut212 · 04/12/2022 11:36

If he’s happy and loves it then absolutely buy it for him, every child is at different stages in life with different interests. It would be a boring world if we were all the same. I’ve kept my sons playmobil for future generations, toys that don’t date

SoMuchToBits · 04/12/2022 11:47

@Mardyface I didn't kill off King Athelstan and I'm not sure he's going to abdicate. But maybe we could have a platinum jubilee of his coronation year?
