Is Playmobil too young for a 7yo?

DC aged 7, School Year 3 has asked for playmobil set for Christmas, they the adventure zoo set.

They have some fine motor delays, and struggle with Lego so I tend to buy Duplo. They’re having OT and Physio input but it won’t be until March. But they absolutely love small world play, they set it up in the hallway and play for hours with the little playmobil people plus small dolls and figures.

My friends with similar age DC seem to think they're a bit old to get playmobil.

So AIBU to buy playmobil or will they be laughed at at school?

Mine still played with it occasionally at that age but they'd had it since about age 3, I'm not sure if I would have bought it for them then, they were more into Lego by that age.

Tali5ker · 03/12/2022 22:08

My 9 year old can play for hours with hers. My 12 year old nephew doesn’t play with his alone anymore, but the moment my daughter is there …. It’s a cousin free for all with an entire world built in the sitting room.

@CornishGem1975 This is my problem, they can't do Lego due to it being fiddly otherwise I'd buy it. They do have a few Lego sets they where given but they've been built once then put back in the box and left untouched.

Playmobil however is used most days.

@Tali5ker That's a really lovely image and a lovely memory for them to have as well

Then go with it @BuyThePlaymobil I don't think it matters at all, like I say, mine still played with it at that age, I just don't remember buying it, but we had tons and it was well-loved. If that's what they want, I'd get it.

JonahAndTheSnail · 03/12/2022 22:11

If it's what they want then I don't see why not. There's no point buying somthing like Lego if they're not going to enjoy it right now. Would kids of 7 years be judging that harshly or would it be more the parent's opinion?

JassyRadlett · 03/12/2022 22:12

My 7yo definitely still plays with his - he has a particular story on the go that is a combo of the scooby-doo sets and the police/prison ones. Mad but it brings him and his friends great joy

@JonahAndTheSnail Unfortunately some of the class parents look down on DC with difficulties, the school itself is lovely and welcoming and DC is extremely happy but some of the class parents are not.

Please buy mine I’ve got every set ever made. 😂

I think it’s a wonderful today and great investment. We always used to ring the factory and buy the dented box ones. So cheap. Or second hand. It is so good quality you can throw it in the loft after being played with for a decade and it is still perfect 10 yrs later.

HopRockers · 03/12/2022 22:17

We are a Lego house our friends have a playmobil house - still used regularly by the 15 & 12 yr old siblings. Lots of stop motion films 😃

(my 15 yr old & the younger ones are all getting Lego for Christmas)

Never too old to play

JonahAndTheSnail · 03/12/2022 22:18

That's really sad. Hopefully their negative attitudes won't rub off on their kids, especially since it's a welcoming shcool. If something does get said to your DC, I would treat it as a chance to talk about how it's ok for people to like different things and it would be boring if we were all the same.

scrivette · 03/12/2022 22:20

My 11 year old still plays with his younger siblings Playmobil and I bought myself the Playmobil House for Christmas. I would buy it, it lasts forever (my nieces use the sets my SIL had as a child) and is quite easy to re sell.

ClangingBell · 03/12/2022 22:21

I’d have thought 7 was peak Playmobil age. My 12 year old played with it until about 9 and will still play with 6 year old DD now. Don’t let a few mean class parents put you off doing something he’d like.

Bagzzz · 03/12/2022 22:26

If your daughter has asked for it then go for it. How will the other parents know what she got?

namechangetheworld · 03/12/2022 22:26

I, too, would presume 7 is the best age for Playmobil. They're still into imaginative play at that age (my 7 year old certainly is) and they're old enough to handle all of the really tiny, fiddly bits.

I'd take Playmobil over Lego any day, much more fun!

Crazyducklady · 03/12/2022 22:31

Playmobil is an awesome present for a 7 year old! Endless fun to be had. Hope their little face is joyous on Christmas morning 😍

RIPhouseplants · 03/12/2022 22:35

My 12 yo and her friends still play with her schlich horses and stable. I’m not sure they would admit that to many of the other kids in their year at school though. I know that one of her close friends has only just been persuaded to pass her playmobil sets onto a younger cousin. So buy your 7yo the playmobil all that matters is that they enjoy it!

KeyWorker · 03/12/2022 22:37

I’ve been buying Playmobil for DD since aged 4 but it’s only now aged 7 that she really gets it and uses all the small pieces. She’s also asked for another set for Christmas and I’ll gladly get it for her. Better that than growing up too quickly. I think it’s quite sad that some people think 7 is too old for this kind of play.

Panickstop · 03/12/2022 22:48

Both children played with it almost daily until age 10/11 then occasionally for a few more years. My 15 year old got one of their favourite sets out again recently (for old times sake) and soon him and his 17 year old brother were sat on the floor setting it up (just don't tell his college mates!!)

AFS1 · 03/12/2022 23:17

If my 14 year old thought no-one would catch her, I reckon she’d get her old playmobil stuff out and play with it!

7 is very definitely not too old for it.

Manchmal · 03/12/2022 23:20

I’d have thought 7 was peak playmobil age tbh. Imagination is all fired up at that age, and can make complex stories and worlds.

HollaHolla · 03/12/2022 23:23

If they enjoy PlayMobil, then buy them PlayMobil. It’s useable at different ages, for different purposes.
My 44 year old brother won’t have my nephews (his sons) mucking up the zoo zones, as you can’t have African and Asian mix. 🤣🤣

I completely agree!

UmbrellaSparrow · 03/12/2022 23:24

My 6 year old has the Playmobil castle & various other figures. He loves it. I like it because they are sturdy & no tiny bits flying everywhere. Your DC is definitely not too old - it's all about the imagination ☺️
